All those achievements you listed can be made for most top actresses. She was the top actress of her time and no more. She has the highest number of flops for a top actress. Her repeated attempts to comeback also failed and how. Average actress, great dancer and beautiful but boring face.

Sridevi is a beter option for the title.

Well actors actresses career is different, Big B still works now but Madhuri retired from the film after she got married to care of her kids and actresses usually vanish from the glamorous world after they get marry and even Sridevi is not much relevant now.

Not really? Kajol, Aishwarya have active careers in their 40's. Sridevi is also going great guns.

Madhuri's dismal show in her second innings proved how relevant she is today. Not a single movie offer in last 5 years is proof enough.

Overrated? Let me ask you this: aside from Sheila, Acting, and iconic performances/roles what are these three actresses really known for? What is their legacy?

And this person from Quora has everything I wanted to say spot on:

In terms of what?

Madhuri Dixit, the timeless actress with amazing acting skills: sure, she is overrated.
but Madhuri Dixit, the dance diva: She IS the dancing queen of Indian Cinema. Her dumkas and tumkas are difficult to impersonate even now. Madhuri Dixit, the timeless beauty: She has one of the most beautiful smiles ever, don't you agree?

I think I agree with this.

Madhuri Dixit, Madhubala, Hema Malini, Sridevi, Rekha = 5 biggest super stars of all-time.

Although I am slightly worried about Mads. Her recent films (I don't want to admit it) but, they have almost tainted her legacy. She can still get over it with 1 great film/performance. But it's not going to be easy.

Sridevi has managed to increase her super stardom in recent years. Never would've imagined things to turn out like this, say in mid 2000s. Madhuri seemed to be far ahead then, during their semi-retirements.

Special mention: Kajol and Aishwarya Rai are also strong Top 10 contenders. Kareena, Priyanka, Deepika make up the rest??

I agree. I do feel Kajol and Aishwarya Rai are strong contenders in addition to Kareena, Priyanka, Deepika. I would also like to add Katrina not because she's famous for her acting (which is obviously not true) but for her iconic dances from Kamli to Sheila to Chikni to Kala Chashma.

Going beyond that, Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi was a true icon of their own times creating legends and creating a culture that is engrained in Bollywood. Same with Chayya Chayya to SRK King of Romance to Sheila Ki Jawani, Madhuri and Sridevi was the BW's superstar heroines of their own times. Before we really had any social media, we relied on VCR tapes to audiotapes which was how I grew up listening to her and watching their dances/movies especially with Khans, Aishwarya and Sushmita.

It's why I feel the late 90s/early 2000s was the Golden Era of Bollywood from songs to acting to indie films and so forth.

I am glad you didn't use the acting scale only

She might not be the best actress around, she needed good directors for that and her dance numbers took attention away from her acting
But overall package I think she was great

But she is not alone. Sridevi is another one. Too bad boney never let her continue acting or dancing for a long time in between.

Otherwise her dancing would also be in top form now

Madhuri lights up a place and she has a beautiful smile.

Another one I can think of a superstar is Aishwarya Rai. She is immensely popular, despite not having that successful movie career or supaar acting

She is a brand on her own and she withstood a lot of trouble and ostracism and still beat it to be still relevant

I cannot think of any other actress who would have sizzled the way she sizzled and tool away the screen from much younger ranbir and anushka for Ae Dil hain Muskil.

Eta: I don't watch a lot of old movies in Hindi
So meena kumari madhubala and hemamalimi are not that familiar to me . I prolly watched one or two movies only

The one I would say greatest Icon to me is SUCHITRA SEN

She is an icon because she knew when to retire and preserve the mystique

The woman retired in the 80s and died 2 years back but people didn't forget her. Even living in seclution, she and her style was hailed as the ultimate
And in Death, the way she was remembered and respected showed the icon that she was.

Sridevi says Hello!

Madhuri was a roaring rage once. but now she is known more for her dance. Sridevi on the other hand can still pull in audience and carry an entire movie on her own AND make it a success.
