It is impossible to keep up with making daily posts...my book club book is just not getting finished...but here is one for today...😊

So, yesterday we were talking about the brilliant Ms Jane Austen and how she has inspired everal generations of romantic story writing...we do see some similarities between her plots and 100s of stories...what is different in a desi soap and her stories is how marriage is viewed in both...

While in Ms Austen's stories...marriage was the ultimate climax to a romantic story...and all these rich eligible bachelors were so prized ...for girls and their mothers wanting to get them to propose and marry them...in desi soaps ...it is quite the opposite...Marriage proposals and marriages are thrown around as some sort of means to take revenge or a sinister motive...and marriages happen (in a lot of cases) in the beginning of romantic story/ drama not at the end...(with rare exceptions of course)...Perhaps...in the Indian society when most marriages have traditionally been arranged and the motto has been to find love after the marriage ...(which in many soaps starts with a compromise) that is the ultimate romantic story...Not sure if that is the case here...

Because frankly speaking...Bituwas actions have confused me as much as they have confused Chandani...😆

So here is this guy...who has been telling her ...how he thinks so low of the Vashishth family, and how much of sinners they are, and how horrible a person she is...yadi yadi yada...and then he turns around and says...he is willing to do what ever she says...he is willing to give up what ever she desires...but he won't give her up!! And the. Out of the blue...just proposes to her for marriage!!

WAIT!! COME AGAIN???

Yeah ...right...that was Chandani's reaction and mine too...Why on earth does he want to marry her if he hates her (or thinks so low of her)? Is there really a sinister plan or is this again Nafarat Paas Na Aane de Mohabbat Door Na Jane de plot...where all he wants is to be with her...his soul mate from childhood sinister plans and motives aside...???

I am not going to go crazy guessing at this point...alll I can say...is for the first time...I can totally understand where Chandani is coming from and her confusion over his behavior ...and her reaction...
ARE YOU CRAZY (DUDE?) 😲

To which he replies...
I SURE AM (subtext...for you)... poor Chandani...she just runs away from what appears to be totally insane behavior...who would blame her??

Bituwa ...of course keeps having those Flash backs...some of sweet memories with Chandu and some of his parents...and that horrible day...when the unthinkable happened...Well...he wanted them to not get the riches...he won that fight...They are destitute...Now what? Is he just playing along and just lookingb for opportunities to make he miserable or is there a bigger plan?

Him taking her room didn't seem to be preplanned...it looked like he just wanted to rile her up...and when he didn't get a reaction from her...he started to tease her another way...

Because if he really wanted an answer from her...he woudnt walk away when she came back to give her answer...or may be he anticipated the answer...didn't want to hear it...because this was not the answer he wanted...

In any case ...looking forward to the other suitor... Bituwa is dominating this game too much...Chandani needs some help...some real other options...because Indrani is of no help on this matter...

Sush ,

Thank You for making a post and posting the VM.

"I love you. I hate you. I like you. I hate you. I love you. I think you're stupid. I think you're a loser. I think you're wonderful. I want to be with you. I don't want to be with you. I would never date you. I hate you. I love you...I think the madness started the moment we met and you shook my hand. Did you have a disease or something?

You are mistaken, Mr. Darcy, if you suppose that the mode of your declaration affected me in any other way, than as it spared the concern which I might have felt in refusing you, had you behaved in a more gentlemanlike manner." (Elizabeth Bennett)

Sush and Shweta 🤗

Lovely take on the episode. And I have summed up this epi in my post on your Austen Special Sushpectives, nevertheless will touch upon the points that are left.
Sush, your analogy to P&P and mine to S&S, reinforces the fact that the characters are seemingly drawn from an Austen novel, more or less. Of course, there are going to be variations and the characters will undergo changes more suitable to the Indian daily soap context. Yet, the similarities are conspicuous.

To me Advay/ Dev is Edward and Chandni is Elinor, especially because from the last two weeks she is just learning to accept the fact that she is affected by the presence of a man, a stranger, which given her past kidnapping fiasco was never possible. And what's more, the man has caught her attention so much that she is unable to shake the feelings he evokes in her and is falling prey to them. I am not writing off her turning into a Lizzy, at least not with the way the character is being developed, but I am yet to be convinced on that.

Ah, what an analogy Sush, To Austen, a marriage was a means to an end, but in Indian desi soaps its the beginning to an end. Which is where this show is going to be set apart from Ms. Austen's stories. Chandni, the Elinor, is not going to be submissive, at least not now. But the difference will come when Chandni will submit herself to the growing attraction and confusion that all but threatens to consume her, the man, her knight in not so shining armour, the Edward, Advay Singh Raizada. She will do it for her family and she will do it for the wealth. I doubt there will be a 'Lucy' yet, because Advay will make sure he marries her, by hook or by crook. But Advay the man is a mystery and our Elinor has not yet bothered to unravel him. And this might be where the Lucy will step in, and in a desi soap it could very well be the besotted sister of Elinor.

"What have wealth or grandeur to do with happiness?'Marianne said. Grandeur has but little,' said Elinor, but wealth has much to do with it.'Elinor, for shame!' said Marianne; money can only give happiness where there is nothing else to give it. Beyond a competence, it can afford no real satisfaction as far as mere self is concerned.'Perhaps,' said Elinor, smiling, we may come to the same point. Your competence and my wealth are very much alike, I dare say; and without them, as the world goes now, we shall both agree that every kind of external comfort must be wanting."

Elinor, Sense and Sensibility

And it will be interesting to see how Chandni discovers Advay's motives behind the marriage and how the beast, Advay, is nothing but her prince charming, her Dev, eventually. And that is when the Knight will rise to protect the honour of his lady, loving her beyond limits and making her his in the true sense. And then they would live happily ever after...

"Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance.
Jane Austen

So far, the marriage seems to be happening and the new entrant in the game will only act as a catalyst and bring Chandni and Dev closer, perhaps, pushing them to marry sooner than later. And that's where the story of the two will begin. And on a closing note, I would say that makers have done a fabulous job with the show and the scenes of Sobti as Advay, I was sold on the Rubik cube one yesterday. What a masterstroke of finesse. And Sobti continues to be the actor one can watch all day and yet not get tired of his acting prowess. I think I am besotted by the man's immense talent.

"You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope...I have loved none but you.
Persuasion, Jane Austen

PS There was a reference of a letter Chandni wrote to Advay and it will be interesting to see the makers pick on that. Man, that is so Austen-esque, and I for one cannot wait for it to unfold.
PPS Murli and Shilpa are made for each other. Another couple in the making, imo. 😆
