Naina Thag Lenge

~1~
Mehek Sharma lived alone with her father, her mother had died when she was born and growing up watching her father look after all, of the villagers, she had from a young age noticed that his heart was more in helping other people, rather than anything she did. So, she tried to make her life the same, revolve around his work and helping him help others. Today had been the year annual vaccine day.
"Papa, we are low on anaesthetics and pain medication She said closing the glass cabinet, it had been a rather long day.
She pulled the pin in her hair and let her long black hair tumble down her back. For once her father's rooms were empty. There were no patients.
"I will order some later, Mehek go close the doors, I will tell Sheetal to heat the food Sheetal, helped them with cooking and cleaning because Mehek spent most of her day helping her father with his patients.
"Yes papa Mehek was hungry, she slowly went to the front and closed the latches, and the door, rattles instantly. There was someone on the other side. Mehek opened the door, what if it was someone sick. Despite her father often warning her that, it was not dangerous to do so. A tall well-dressed man stood there, he was incredibly tall, and handsome.
"Hello, do you need any help? She asked him, she noticed, his dark eyes seemed cloudy, he took a step towards her and she took one back. He was clutching his side, because of his dark clothes she had not noticed it, he was bleeding. Mehek's eyes widened as he took another shaky step and fell onto her.
"Papa come quick! She shouted, she quickly wrapped her arms around him but he was so heavy.
He was warm, probably burning up, she felt his hands grip her long hair, Her father came in and quickly helped her take him to one of the empty beds.
Mehek's white Panjabi was covered in his blood her hands shook as she helped her father, by taking off his shirt very gently first she removed his coat and placed it over the chair then she unbuttoned his black shirt, she could not help but inhale sharply, his chest was hard and toned, he had a large dragon tattoo that covered most of his side and arm.
"The boy has been stabbed He said, going to the basin and washing his hands.
He listed some items he, needed but Mehek stood still for a moment as the man held her hair in his fist. His eyes remained closed in a sleep, almost. She smothered his fingers back and made him release her hair.
"His vitals are low Her father said, using a light to check his eyes, and see if they were responding.
Mehek began warming water and quickly placed, all of the things her father had named onto a tray and took them to her father.
"We have nothing for the pain, this is going to be hard Mehek I think maybe you should get a belt for his teeth Mehek winced.
"Well my boy you don't look like you are from these parts. He looks like a city pretty boy He said, Her father, when he was worried, he always prattled on about little details to try and calm everyone down. Mehek pressed her thumb onto his lips and his mouth parted.
She placed the belt inside and his eyes opened but very barely.
He looked at her and his hand shot out and grabbed her wrist. Her father did not notice as his only focus was on treating him.
"I am sorry this is going to hurt very badly but I have to clean this wound He told him, Mehek winced as his hand tightened on her wrist. He did not make a sound just stared at her, almost as if transfixed. Mehek placed her hand over his, to give him some comfort.
"Not a talkative boy are you? Her father said. Mehek tried to pull her hand away but he would not let go, to get the warm water.
"Just a minute I need to get some water She said he just stared at her blankly for a second she wondered if he understood her. But when his hand loosened, she knew he knew her.
"Mehek I am going to need a glass of whiskey He said, Mehek nodded and poured some in a glass, she placed the dish at her father's side and handed him the glass.
While the man lay there just starring at her again.
"Who would do such a thing Mehek said, softly. She never understood violence. Or crime for that matter, it made no sense to her.
Why people fought for things like money and power, were things she would never understand. There were so much other things to life, like love, family...
"Not everyone wants to be in peace like you darling, you get people, who are not happy with what they have so they see other people's things and take them away from them. I think that is what this pretty boy went threw
Mehek frowned, he did look quiet wealthy.
"Well he is lucky to have found us There was no other doctor for, quite a few miles, Mehek said.
{}{}{}
Mehek removed the belt from his mouth and used a warm cloth to clean his chest.
Her father had put on a white gauze over his wound, that he had freshly stitched up.
"Mehek when you are done, give him this to wear, He is a strong boy his fever is almost gone It was one of her father's shirts. Her father left it on the table, and yawned.
"Papa go sleep, I will look after him She said, Her father nodded and patted her head.
"I don't know what I would do without you He said shaking his head. Mehek laughed.
"You would have married Sheetal and had another daughter She said winking at him, he shook his head and blushed.
"Meera is the only woman I will ever love. You live once, you love once and you die once He said with finality. Mehek smiled, it was something she heard a million times.
"Papa you are still handsome you know...
"Chup, you are a motor mouth He said kissing her forehead.
"Goodnight my darling.
Mehek turned back to the man, she placed her hand on the back of his head, when she finished wiping him.
And slowly pulled him towards her, he leaned against her chest almost like a hug and Mehek could feel his heartbeat against her chest and sighed. She put the shirt gently, threw his arms and then pushed him back onto the bed. She felt him grip her hair again at the very end of her back. His eyes closed as she slowly closed all off the buttons and pulled the blanket over him. His father's shirt was slightly small for him, as his muscular arms and chest bulged out of it.
Mehek tried to pull the lock of her long hair he had intertwined in his fist from him but he held it so tight she could not.
Mehek slept at his side that night.
{}{}{}{}
3 days later.
Mehek sat with her father, as they went through all of the medicines they had received that morning making sure the numbers were correct. Their patient was sitting watching them. His name was Shaurya. Shaurya Khanna, Mehek had found out after finding his wallet when she had given Sheetal his things to clean.
He did not say much. He just kept to himself, her father said, by today he would be stronger and the colour would come back into his cheeks, he was right. Mehek could feel him watching her again, her father found it funny and teased her constantly, about how patients took to her. Mehek knew it was only a matter of time before her father noticed, Shaurya Khanna's starring.
"What happened to you all those nights ago son Her father asked him, as they were all sitting and having dinner, Mehek helped Sheetal lay the table and placed some food on her father's plate.
"I had a meeting, I decided to stop dealing with some people and they did not like it so they stabbed me. And left me in the middle of nowhere, they took all of my belongings, I walked around and someone told me that the doctor was here...I was wondering if there was a phone I could use He said.
"As we told you before the only phone is in the main village and it is a bit of a walk from here, but since you seem far stronger, I think maybe in a day or two you can go on and find your way. Just let your body heal properly...
Mehek felt him, looking at her again. She wondered why he did that, it made her so uncomfortable. She dished some food into his plate, as it was hard for him to stretch.
She sat down next to her father, and ate slowly, looking at her plate, whenever she looked up his gaze remained fixed on her.
"So, what do you do Shaurya? Her father asked him.
"I am in my family's business he said cryptically.
"Like my little dove here, all she ever wants to do is be stuck to my side, which city are you from? He said smiling at Mehek.
"Delhi He kept his answers short. Mehek noticed, he was not married, he lived with his family, were some of the things he told her father.
When everyone was done, Mehek picked up the plates, and went into the kitchen.
"How long have your practised her Doctor Sharma? He asked her father, Mehek could hear from inside the kitchen.
"Over 30 years, my father was a doctor before me as well.
Mehek did not hear the rest as she went to her room. She pulled the pins from her hair and allowed her long hair to tumble down her back. Her head slightly hurt as she had spent most of the day with the heavy thick length bound tightly to her head. She pulled out, her nightdress and left it on her bed.
{}{}{}
Mehek was rubbing some lavender lotion on her arms after her bath, when she heard a noise outside her room, she placed her lotion on her bed and went to her door and opened it slightly.
Did her father need something? She wondered.
There was no one outside, she went back inside her room and, closed the door.
{}{}{}
Mehek was sitting with one of the villager's kids.
"Hmm do you like candy? She asked him, he nodded and she took out a lollypop that her father kept for little ones.
"Here... Shaurya was sitting in the bed, that had become his and just watching her again. She tried to ignore him.
"Didi why does he keep looking at you? The child asked her, Mehek shrugged. As she had been wondering the exact same thing.
{}{}{}
"Doctor Sharma, I think I am strong enough Shaurya said, to her father on the fifth day of his stay at their house.
"Well my boy let me just check the wound, Mehek why don't you take him down into the village and show him where the PCO is Mehek who was busy making one of the newly emptied patients beds looked up and paused.
Shaurya was looking at her again, and she looked away uncomfortably. What was his problem? Wait her father had just said. Her eyes grew wide.
"Papa...
"Mehek loves to go into the village, but a lot of the boys give her too much attention I say, she looks just like her mother I guess that is why, back when I was young all of them would fight to have a chance with my Meera
Shaurya smiled strangely at the story, yet he still, continued watching her. Mehek wondered how her father had not noticed it.
{}{}{}
Mehek walked with Shaurya. in utter silence. Unused to silence, and uncomfortable with his starring.
"Why do you look at me so much? She asked him, he looked continued looking at her.
"You are beautiful He said eventually, his tone was almost reluctant.
"Thanks Mehek said, she usually was, able to talk to anyone but Shaurya was different there was something off about him.
{}{}{}
The rest of the way Mehek remained silent wondering, how someone like him had ended up here. She went to speak to one of the teachers, while Shaurya phoned. When he looked about done she went towards the PCO.
"Bhaiya how much is it? She asked taking out some money.
"Didi, bhaiya already paid Mehek frowned how did he have money on him. Had he not been robbed.
"I thought you were robbed... She said, He frowned for a second and looked confused,
"I was robbed, but I have a few notes in my pocket. Which I always keep hidden in case of emergencies He said hastily. Mehek said nothing. Rich people were weird after all.
"Will your family be coming soon? She asked him.
"Yes, they will, be here.
"Well you should allow my father to dress your wound one more time before you leave Mehek said, waving at some children.
Shaurya remained watching her the entire time.
{}{}{}
Mehek was talking to Sheetal about something when she heard a car outside. Cars never came to these parts, so she knew Shaurya's family was probably here. Mehek wondered towards her father's doctors room to inform them.
"I want to marry your daughter, Doctor Sharma
"My Mehek...
"Yes, before I left I wanted to ask you for her hand She could see that, Shaurya had seen her outside the door as her reflection, reflected on the glass cabinet. He seemed unfazed by her standing there.
"I don't know my boy. I need to know more about your family...
"You can meet them today
Mehek walked backwards away. What was happening. He had never even spoken to her? Why did he want to marry her? She bumped into Sheetal.
"Why are you walking backwards? I thought you went to call your father and handsome She referred to Shaurya as handsome. Mehek bit her lip and her cheeks warmed.
"I need to go to the bathroom why don't you call them please She told her, Sheetal nodded and Mehek ran towards the bathroom. She went inside and locked the doors.
What was happening, her heart thundered against her chest.
What was going on?
What was going on?
{}{}{}
"Mehek come outside, we have guests Her father said softly outside the door.
Mehek washed her face, and wondered if her yellow suit was a bad choice, her father told her yellow made her skin more luminous. She wished she had not put it on that morning, or left her long hair down. She opened the door.
"Mehek do you trust me? He asked her.
"Yes papa
"Do you trust me to make the right decision for you?
Mehek knew where this was leading to.
"Yes, Papa She said unable to refuse.
"Then you will do as I say right?
"Yes papa She repeated, again. He took her hand and brought her into the drawing room. The drawing room was never used by her or her father.
"This is my daughter
"She is lovely He said, Mehek felt him look at her almost as if he had seen a ghost.
A man sat there. Mehek wondered who he was. Was he Shaurya's father?
"This Shaurya's father Rajeev Her father said, they looked nothing alike at all.
Mehek said a polite hello. But sat awkwardly at her father's side.
"I take it Shaurya has already asked for Mehek's hand... He stated.
Shaurya sat next to his father and Sheetal came in with some tea.
"Let Mehek serve it Her father said, Mehek frowned, she was utterly horrible at doing house work. She would ruin boiling water even.
"Papa... She began to protest, he gave her a look that said just pour it quietly. Mehek shook her head, well it was there poison.
She poured the tea, spilling some milk onto the table.
Her father winced.
Well he wanted to show her off as a domestic goddess which she was not. Mehek noticed rather than bringing sugar, Sheetal had brought the salt and smiled, she placed three heaped spoons for Shaurya and none for either of the fathers. Well after this he would not want to marry her, she thought to herself.
She handed everyone there, tea and went back to her seat. Mehek smiled and waited for Shaurya to even indicate once that there was any problem with the tea but, he did not. He drank it. While his father grimaced, and took small sips.
"What happened uncle ji is the tea not good? She asked wondering if she had mistakenly given him the salty tea.
"Nothing, at all dear its lovely He said forcing a smile. Mehek looked at Shaurya who watched her again.
"What have you decided doctor Sharma? Rajeev asked him. Mehek's father put his cup down.
"Your son, is a straight forward boy. He doesn't pretend. His eyes are honest and by his hands I can tell he is hard working and not just a pretty boy as I assumed
"Yes, Shaurya is Rajeev looked at Shaurya strangely and he gave him a narrowed glance.
"So, is that a yes?
"Yes
Mehek stood up, her father had not asked her once. If she wished to marry Shaurya, did he not care about her feelings?
"Papa...
"You trust me, right Mehek He said, reminding her of earlier, Mehek remained quiet.
"Then I guess we should not delay, Shaurya has a lot of work abroad, He won't be back for my months, after this week so maybe we can have the wedding before he goes?
"Well this is happening so fast... Her father said, Mehek blinked as her father's hand tightened on her own hand.
"I don't, drink, I don't smoke. I don't have a criminal record. I run my family's business, what more do you need to know? Shaurya asked her father impatiently. Her father looked at her and his eyes moistened.
"I have never once spoken to Mehek, in a loud voice. I have brought her up with so much care and love. All I want is for someone to look after her well and love her... Mehek felt her own eyes prick. She hugged her father and placed her cheek on his shoulder.
"Papa, I don't want to ever leave you
"Mehek will happy with me, Doctor Sharma
"Is that your word? Her father asked him, he nodded stiffly and her father took her hand and placed it in his.
"Mehek, I wanted a prince for you, that if why whenever any of the village boys proposed I always turned them down. Because one day a prince would come and marry you
{}{}{}
5 days later.
Sometimes we do things for other people. Rather than ourselves, Mehek told herself after her wedding, as her father left her in Shaurya's car.
"Papa, I love you. I will phone you every day She said though her tears, holding his hand from the window.
"Be happy my darling. Bye
He gave her something wrapped in brown paper.
"Keep it safe He said. Mehek nodded and hugged it to her chest.
Shaurya pulled the seat belt over her and locked it in. Mehek had never left the village before, she could not help but cry as he rolled the window up, and sped off.
{}{}{}
Mehek waited, in the foyer as Shaurya insisted they stop at a hotel that night. He said that he was too tired to drive the entire way back. Mehek had stopped crying and opened the gift her father had given her, it was a picture of her mother, Mehek smiled and placed it in her bag safely. Her clothing felt heavy and she slowly pulled her veil off. She wanted nothing more but to have all the heavy jewellery off her.
{}{}{}
Shaurya barely spoke to her, Mehek found it awkward alone with him in a room.
Mehek kept her eyes on the floor, she had read once in one of her father's books about the process girls went through on their wedding night and shuddered at the thought of having a stranger, touch her and possess her so intimately. Sure, he was handsome, he had everything any girl would want in a husband but she felt strange, she did not even know what his favourite colour was nor did she know what he liked to eat. Whenever she thought of love she imagined, knowing everything about the person she loved and adjusting her world so that she could accommodate them.
"Shaurya I am not comfortable with... She went quiet, as she noticed how near he was, she could not help but feel slightly dazed when she looked, into his dark eyes. His hands fell onto her waist. Mehek stood still just frozen there.
{}{}{}
Mehek wondered if her marriage was arranged or a love marriage, Shaurya had seen her asked for her hand, after he had ended up at her door, she touched his cheek, he was sleeping next to her, she wore his shirt, they had not had one proper conversation, but he had taken her virginity.
Something she should have given the man she loved. He was her husband.
Surely that was enough, she wondered how he felt about her, she wondered if he loved her, was that why he had married her, she could not move as his cheek lay against her long hair which shone over his pillow. He held her a lock of her long hair in his again. Wrapped around his fist.
