Slughorn said, before Harry, only one student was able earn Felix Felicis as a prize... and most probably that was Snape

Lemme explain Pia,

Very important and necessary I am
Yet requires luck
You need me to fight the critical situations

DADA knowledge is very important to survive in magical world

And he always wanted me

Now this he can be either snape or voldemort...as both wanted to teach DADA at Hogwarts... but i think HE is Snape...

But his fate left him behind

Voldemort was unsuccessful...but Snape got the chance in Sixth book

Clues:
1. sessions related to this occured

I think Sim meant DA's DADA sessions here

2. HE once got lucky

This hint proves that this HE in the riddle is Snape

3. It was cursed

DADA job was cursed by voldemort

You explained very well Falak and covered all the points and u've done my job...but still I am giving my explanation.

Solution: Defense Against Dark Arts (D.A.D.A.)

Very important and necessary I am,
D.A.D.A. is very important and necessary for any wizards/witches.

Yet requires luck,
None of the teachers have enough luck to survive the job more than once a year. And Snape got lucky once to get the job in his sixth year.

You need me to fight the critical situations,
Every Hogwarts students and good wizards and witches need to have an extraordinary skill and knowledge in D.A.D.A to fight the critical situations (such as Patronus charm to fight the Dementors, Disarming spells, etc etc)

And he always wanted me,
Snape always wanted the D.A.D.A. teacher post.

But his fate left him behind.
But Snape lost this job most of the times and he finally got the oppurtunity in the sixth year of Harry.

And "special sessions associated with me" refers to Harry's D.A.D.A classes to his fellow mates in his fifth year when Umbridge was not giving them proper lessons.

And last clue that is "it was cursed" highlights the fact that Voldemort had jinxed the post after not getting the job from Dumbledore.
