Smoke without Fire
"Hi!"
"Hello madame.. Kaisa raha aapka din?" Shravan was glad to see her smiling as his tired arms itched to wrap around her..
"Hmm bohot achcha.. Aaj naya order mila.. Lao mai kar deti hu"
She walked up to him to loosen his tie and suddenly went all police dog on him.. Sniffing every corner of his shirt and face
"Sumo.. kya kar rahi ho? Soongh kyu rahi ho mujhe?" he asked backing out
"I smell smoke"
"Sorry madame .. I know I am fiery hot but there is absolutely no smoke coming out of me" he smirked... he just couldn't believe this woman
"Ruko tum.. I told you I smell smoke.. Tumne smoke kiya?"
"Kya? Pagal ho gayi ho.. You know I don't like it myself. Wo ek client ki office me gaya tha to unka kuch staff smoke kar raha tha meeting me"
"Jhoot mat bolo... I know you smoked..wo kya tumhari god me baith ke smoke kar rahe the jo tumhari shirt se smell a rahi hai... Tum mujhse jhoot bolne lage ho.. Pata nahi kya kya baate chupane lage ho. Aisi kya tension hai tumhe ki smoking shuru kar di.. Tumhe pata hai it's so hazardous to health.. Cancer ho sakta hai.. Bhagwan na kare aisa kuch hua to mai kya karungi Shravan... aur secondary smoke is not good for me too.. Hamare baby pe effect ho sakta hai... tum tum itne samajhdaar ho ke bhi aise sab.. Kyu kiya tumne Shravan.." she had started crying after this fit and stormed out of the room leaving a confused, tired and flabbergasted Shravan rooted in his place as he was still trying to figure out a response to her first line after which she had blurted out an essay and left!!
"Isko thik se padhaate to lawyer banti shayad.. Research to nahi par bakwas to karti court me thik se" he was too tired to follow her at that moment. It worked better to let her hormones come down a notch before he spoke to her.
Downstairs in the kitchen Sumo was a Tsunami and the others had already evacuated anticipating the destruction that might follow.
"Sab pati ek jaise hote hain.. Best friend bano, zindagi bhar jaano tab bhi paheli ki tarah.. Nahi jalebi ki tarah... jhoot sirf jhoot bolna ata hai.. Haan lawyer jo thehra.. Jhoot bolne ki to official training mili hai.. Par mere paas bhi saboot hai is baar. Aur mai aur saboot ikattha kar ke rahungi !!" she kept mumbling while feverishly chopping veggies.
A worried Nirmala glanced into the Kitchen after Kamini told her the state of the kitchen in Suman's hand. Tonight dinner would be ready very quick and would be definitely very spicy !!
When Shravan walked down for dinner the rage was still on. Some hormones these were... she kept mum throughout dinner although it was delicious but did not even smile when Lalaji and Pushkar gave her compliments about the food. She sat far away from him next to Nirmala who was surprised along with the others in the family.
"Ok Sumo.. you don't trust me.. I am going to string you along for some more time now."
"Maa mai jara walk kar ke aata hu..."
"Suman ko bhi le ja thoda chalegi to achcha rahega uske liye" Kamini said looking at Suman who was near boiling point since evening and it wouldn't be good for the baby..
"Nahi mujhe akele jana hai.. Aap Sumo ke saath walk kar lo na please chachi.. Mai ghar ke bahar ja ke walk karunga aaj" he said as he went into his room to put on shoes and quickly left.
"Ghar ke bahar.. Pakka smoke karne jana hoga" Suman had made up her mind.. "Agar T shirt se smell ayi to aaj to isko Sofe pe sulaungi"
It was very late in the night but there was still no sign of Shravan.. Suman was fighting off sleep just to get that perfect proof of smoking but eventually her tired body gave in as she closed her eyes still in sitting position.
When Shravan came back he chuckled at the silliness of the woman. Mouth in a frown, hands crossed.. She was ready to interrogate him as soon as he entered.. But thankfully had slept.
He put her into sleeping position and slid next to placing a hand on the little bump of her belly..
"Sorry baby.. Mujhe tum dono ko pareshan karna achcha nahi lagta.. Lekin ye tumhari mummy hai na.. Bohot badi ullu hai..to usko thodasa pareshan karunga.. Thik hai na. Team?? And he felt the bump move which made him smile and bend down to kiss it"
Next day morning Suman woke up as usual in his arms.. The first thing she did was sniff him.. And he smelled nothing like smoke.. He smelled a lot like him and little bit like her because of their proximity which made her smile.. Maybe she was upset for no reason yesterday. Why would he lie to her. She knew he did not like smoking either it was in fact a strict no no at Malhotra Mansion and Shravan was never disobedient to his dad's orders.
She kept gazing at him.. Messy thick sexy hair, beautifully cut face, the little stubble which she loved on her own skin, his light brown eyes which were now hidden behind the curtains of his eyelids which were adorning a set of thick long eyelashes, his soft pillowy lips which she missed since 2 days.. There was no kiss last night.. Not even a peck and it was all because of her... "how come a guy looks so beautiful... how dare I let other women see this fine specimen of man in my wake... He must be locked up in a room where only I can see him.. Rather tied..so I Can.." Suman realised her gutter hormones trying to keep them in check... as he eyes still trailed lower...she saw it...
A red LIPSTICK mark near his T shirt collar. She did not wear such lipstick last night... And he did not have it before leaving for his walk... "Hey bhagwan...Shravan tum mujhse kya kya chupane lage ho... pehle smoking, fir ye.. Walk pe ja raha hu keh ke lipstick mark... matlab jiske bhi hoton ka ye mark hi wo aas paas rehti hogi... Kahi wo hot new spinster in town millionaire heiress Shanaya Singh to nahi? Pichli baar bhi kaise kitty party ke baad ruki rahi... and Shravan se mil kar hi gayi.. She had kissed him on the cheek then...aur ab to T-shirt pe nishan hai.. Matlab aur kaha kaha ..."
Suman's imagination had already taken flight into cloudy skies by the time he woke up and saw the quivering lips of his woman on seeing her territory invaded first thing in the morning...he smirked and raised his eyebrow to question her.
"Kya?"
"Kya!!! Mujhse pooch rahe ho kya kya...ye kya hai tumhare T shirt pe... kal smoke.. Aur aaj to ye ye ...lipstick.." tears had started flowing from her eyes which disturbed him and he moved his hand to wipe them which she shot away and got up from the bed and left to the bathroom.
When she came out of the bathroom she was freshly bathed and much better so he sighed in relief and left to freshen up himself.
When he came out of the bathroom Sumo was nowhere to be found.
"Sumo.. Sumo!!" he called out to no avail.
"Ma aap ne Sumo ko dekha kahi?"
"Haan wo to abhi abhi Tiwari killa gayi..keh rahi thi nanu ki yaad a rahi hai to wahi rahungi 2-3 din" Nirmala informed.
"Ye mazaak shayad jyada khich gaya lagta hai... " he thought and decided to follow his wife to her maternal abode for an apology.
When he reached Tiwari Killa Sumo's car was not in the parking... she had definitely lied to Nirmala
He still went in to meet nanaji to confirm his doubt. Next stop was PCT.
Preeta was busy instructing the staff about daily chores when Shravan literally barged in between the activity.
"Sumo kaha hai?"
"Shravan? Sumo to nahi ayi. Suabh call kar ke din ka kaam bata diya tha usne fir pata nahi kaha chali gayi.."
He pulled his palm down his face in frustration. His prank had gone too far and he was afraid the price he would have to pay was not something he could bear...where else could she be...
The entire day he looked from their school to her close friend's house to nearby temples she frequented but she had vanished in a way and her phone was dead as well.
A reluctant Shravan went home after several calls from Nirmala and Pushkar.
"Bhaiyya kaha the aap din bhar?" Pushkar was worried for his brother.
"Wo Sumo.."
"Wo kab se aap ka wait kar rahi hai.. .khana tak nahi khaya usne"
"Wait? Kya?"
Before Pushkar could say another word Shravan had bounded up the steps to his room where a calm and composed Sumo was placing his ironed dress shirts in the closet.
He turned her around in one swift motion a bit harsh for his own liking considering her current state but then she had almost given him a heart attack...
"Kaha thi tum din bhar?" his voice a few notches up
"Ghar par hi to thi" she replied coolly
"Ghar par? Ma ne kaha tha tum nanu se milne ja rahi ho... maine tumhe kaha kaha nahi dhunda.. Paagalo ki tarah ek ek raaste ki khaakh chaan kar aya hu... saans nahi a rahi thi ye soch ke tum nahi aaogi saamne.. Aur tum yaha dhobi ke kapde rakh rahi hoo !!"
"PHONE kaha hai tumhara?"
"Oh sorry charge karna bhul gayi" she again turned to her task.
"Sumo... " he waited to catch a breath while she stood waiting.
"I am sorry.."
"Hmm..." was her reply
"Par sach me maine smoke nahi kiya. Kabhi karunga bhi nahi... aur rahi baat lipstick ki to wo to tumhari hi hai.. Vanity se le li thi maine..."
"To tum mujhe pareshaan kar rahe the?" she asked narrowing her gaze on him
"Haan...kyunki tumne mujhpe bharosa nahi kiya"
"To maine bhi tumhe ullu banaya...kyunki tumne mujhe pareshaan kiya !!"
"Tit for tat?"
"Yess sir!! Sumo hu mai chhodne wali nahi hu"
"Meri jaan nikal di tumne... harjaana bharo"
"Bhul jao wo to tum."
"Achcha challenge?"
"Jabardasti kiss karoge mujhe?"
"Nahi mai to Shanaya ke paas..." he was not able to complete the sentence as his collar was held by firm grip pulling him down to lock his lips with hers..
"Dobara uska naam bhi mat lena tum warna lock kar ke rakh dungi" she said all her passion, all her desire and possessiveness apparent in her gaze...
" I love these pregnancy hormones..." he said pulling her lips into the kiss again.
