Flossing Day

When was the last time that you flossed your teeth, honestly? Yeah, you probably have heard it from your dentist just about every time you have gone to have your teeth cleaned (or cavities filled, or teeth pulled. . .), but have you actually listened to the advice? No more excuses yes, there's actually a day to remind you to floss your teeth. Well, it's not just that Flossing Day exists to remind you of your oral health in general, but flossing in particular because that's the thing that you're most likely to overlook. Admit it, we all forget to do it.

History of Flossing Day

Flossing Day has been celebrated since the year 2000, to remind people of the importance of looking after their teeth. Flossing is an important component of this, and dental floss has been available since the late 1890s. Ironically enough, when Johnson and Johnson developed the first patented dental floss in 1898, toothbrushes were still quite expensive. Originally, floss was made from thin silk threads, but by the end of WWII nylon had become prevalent. While it did take 102 years to come up with such a day as Flossing Day, you shouldn't really overlook your oral hygiene for that long. If you did, you'd lose all of your teeth long before that.

Celebrating Flossing Day

Celebrating Flossing Day is quite simple get up in the morning and floss your teeth (either before or after brushing, but both brushing and flossing are equally important to dental hygiene according to the American Dental Association). Flossing day is meant to raise awareness about oral health, and as such it would be a fitting occasion to schedule yourself a dentist's appointment, especially if you haven't visited the dentist in a while. Some people have an irrational fear of going to the dentist, but you shouldn't let this deter you (there are even dentists these days that will sedate you so that you can have dental work done. But let's say you've been to the dentist lately in that case, you can check and see if you have dental floss at home. If you don't have any, then Flossing Day would be the perfect occasion to celebrate by going out and buying some dental floss.

Restaurants and cafeterias can observe Flossing Day by providing dental floss with meals that they serve, and managers in other fields can promote the holiday by giving out dental floss to their employees for the occasion. For the artistically inclined, floss art contests are not unheard of, and this would also be the perfect way to mark the occasion of Flossing Day. Still not sure how to celebrate? Look on the National Flossing Council's official website for more ideas.

Systems Engineer Day

With the world becoming more and more digitized every day, there is a group of people that has rather suddenly become one of the most important groups of people in the world: systems engineers. Systems engineers make enormous contributions to the world as we know it every single day, allowing us to live the increasingly comfortable lives we are accustomed to, and neither our personal nor our professional lives would be the same without them. Systems engineers work on numerous complex projects: spacecraft design, computer chip design, robotics, software integration, and bridge building. The computer you're using right now to read this article would not exist if it weren't for systems engineers, nor would the plane you're taking to go to your exotic holiday destination, and nor would the bridge you need to cross to get to work every day. And let's not forget the International Space Station, one of the most impressive examples of what systems engineering can accomplish. Though systems engineer is a very young profession, there is no disputing that it is one of the most important ones in today's world.

History of Systems Engineer Day

The term systems engineering first appeared in Bell Telephone Laboratories in the 1940s. Today, 75 years later, systems engineering has been divided into many fields and sub-fields including cognitive systems engineering, industrial engineering, mechatronic engineering, reliability engineering, security engineering and software engineering, to name but a few.

Systems Engineer Day was created just recently by the folks at www.systemsengineerday.com as a way of saying thank you to the men and women who sit in front of computers for hours every day to make our lives better and easier.

How to Celebrate Systems Engineer Day

If you yourself are a systems engineer, today is your day, so make the most of it: maybe it's high time you took a day off and looked at a real landscape instead of the Windows desktop ones. Relax your eyes, enjoy the fresh air, have a picnic! Or if you fancy a more social situation, why not get together with your other systems engineer buddies and just have some beers, hang out and laugh at jokes only you understand?

If, on the other hand, you're not a systems engineer, this is your chance to show the systems engineers in your life some appreciation. The folks at www.systemsengineerday.com have plenty of suggestions about how you can do this.

invite them for a few drinks on the house after work
let them take an early afternoon off or late morning in
bring in some morning/afternoon treats like donuts or a few cans of their favourite soda
alternately, bring in some nice bottles of wine or a couple of cases of their favourite beer to take home
get them tickets to an upcoming movie
order a big cake for the entire team to share
put out a company notice/intranet post acknowledging the work they do
remember that even a simple pat on the back, high five and just saying thank you can go a long way!
So don't let another year go by without saying thank you to the people who help make our world a better place every single day and celebrate their achievements!

Buy Nothing Day

When was the last time you went a whole day without buying anything? In this day and age, is it actually possible to buy nothing for twenty four hours? Supporters of Buy Nothing Day' think it is. And what's more, they think we should all try it. At its core, Buy Nothing Day is a protest against the consumerism the organizers felt was necessary in our world, governed by the need to "have things.

History of Buy Nothing Day

Buy Nothing Day was founded in Vancouver, Canada by artist Ted Dave in September of 1992. It is celebrated on the Friday after American Thanksgiving (the day also infamously known as Black Friday'). And anyone who has ever seen what happens in North America during the Black Friday sales understands all too well why it was high time that we take a step back and look at ourselves, our behavior, and contemplate the meaning of all of the Black Friday madness. Soon after Buy Nothing Day was created, campaigns to have a similar day of reflection started appearing in the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Austria, Germany, New Zealand, Japan, the Netherlands, France, and Norway. More than 65 nations currently participate in it. Adbusters, a company responsible for the inital promotion of Ted Dave's idea for Buy Nothing Day, states that the day "isn't just about changing your habits for one day but "about starting a lasting lifestyle commitment to consuming less and producing less waste.
