IPKKND Nostalgia: Episode 030
Mujhe Farak Nahi Padta
1. Mujhe koi farak nahi padta. This is the first appearance (I believe) of Arnav using this phrase. The clue to Arnav's words is often the opposite of what he feels. This is the ASR-Arnav duality that we always speak about. I think this is where I fell in love with Arnav Singh Raizada. After this episode, I began to see him as a deeply conflicted person. History has taught him to suppress who he is, and adopt the ASR exterior. Khushi creates a chink in that armour. Maybe we can even look at that cut in his palm as that chink through which she has entered. Anjali asks, "why are you so hard on her?" And he admits it: "I don't know." He doesn't say because she did this and that...He recognizes that his behaviour is inexcusable. It is irrational. He's been trying to destroy Khushi because she is awakening the entity that he has managed to suppress successfully so far.
2. Anjali is lovely in this episode. She can see beyond his armour. Because she knew him before he put it on. She also knows why he put it on. And she has always had access to the person underneath. This is a case of how siblings will process the same tragedy in different ways. The history of a family is not one history, but many histories. She realizes that he is disturbed because he doesn't know what state Khushi is in. When she offers to phone the Guptas, he doesn't prevent her. And if we are really studying this frame-by-frame, then I am quite sure that the moment I fell in love with him, was that moment of him listening attentively to Anjali's conversation with Payal.
3. Of course, this is fiction. And if everyone was healthy, intelligent and loving there would be no story ever. So Shyam has to makes mistakes for there to be plot. And he has made several, not the least being Khushi's job at AR. But that was not an error in judgement. Because he got her that job before he decided to move in and pursue Khushi. But now he has to fix that and he is using this guesthouse incident to campaign for Khushi leaving AR. He recognizes that a connection has been made between the Raizadas and the Guptas and he has to sever it. Nice close-call moment when the phone rings (it's Anjali), he turns to pick up the phone---and Payal prevents him.
4. I really didn't understand how Shyam's analogy influenced Khushi away from the frenzied jalebi-making. But he does succeed. And everyone seems really pleased by it. Buaji praises his support during the crisis to Bawji. And Shyam puffs with pride. It's a cringe moment.
5. Let me get this out of the way---I really love that ivory night suit Khushi is wearing. She looks so fragile. She's livid and she's disturbed. She can't stop thinking about Arnav. And he can't stop thinking about her. Akaash's comment, "you look like you had a bad night," was not well-received. The man has not slept. And he is heading to work---perhaps curious whether Khushi will turn up.
