It is driven by his feelings, his actions and his reactions to circumstances. He is a very sensitive guy and his feelings run very deep. When he gives , he submits himself. There are no half measures with this man. He loved his mom deeply. He felt his mom's pain when his father betrayed her and it stayed with him. Even Anjali ( her daughter ) and Nani ( her mother) moved on from that incident but he could not let go of it. And hence those flashbacks. He even renounced his father's name for causing so much pain to his beloved mother. He loves his sister same way and feels responsible and protective of her. When shyam's truth is revealed his sister became his first priority , his love and his heartbreak went on to back burner. Khushi understands the depth of his love. She understands him even when he cannot voice out his feelings. It shows when she just says 'hum samjhthe hai'. He overcame the pain of his parent's tragedy for Khushi. What more proof does she need of his love.

Beautifully stated, Pari. Especially this:
He overcame the pain of his parent's tragedy for Khushi. What more proof does she need of his love.

I've always maintained that IPK is a take on "Beauty and the Beast."
The story is about Beauty seeing through the beastly exterior :-)

IPKKND Nostalgia: Episode 030

Mujhe Farak Nahi Padta

1. Mujhe koi farak nahi padta. This is the first appearance (I believe) of Arnav using this phrase. The clue to Arnav's words is often the opposite of what he feels. This is the ASR-Arnav duality that we always speak about. I think this is where I fell in love with Arnav Singh Raizada. After this episode, I began to see him as a deeply conflicted person. History has taught him to suppress who he is, and adopt the ASR exterior. Khushi creates a chink in that armour. Maybe we can even look at that cut in his palm as that chink through which she has entered. Anjali asks, "why are you so hard on her?" And he admits it: "I don't know." He doesn't say because she did this and that...He recognizes that his behaviour is inexcusable. It is irrational. He's been trying to destroy Khushi because she is awakening the entity that he has managed to suppress successfully so far.

2. Anjali is lovely in this episode. She can see beyond his armour. Because she knew him before he put it on. She also knows why he put it on. And she has always had access to the person underneath. This is a case of how siblings will process the same tragedy in different ways. The history of a family is not one history, but many histories. She realizes that he is disturbed because he doesn't know what state Khushi is in. When she offers to phone the Guptas, he doesn't prevent her. And if we are really studying this frame-by-frame, then I am quite sure that the moment I fell in love with him, was that moment of him listening attentively to Anjali's conversation with Payal.

3. Of course, this is fiction. And if everyone was healthy, intelligent and loving there would be no story ever. So Shyam has to makes mistakes for there to be plot. And he has made several, not the least being Khushi's job at AR. But that was not an error in judgement. Because he got her that job before he decided to move in and pursue Khushi. But now he has to fix that and he is using this guesthouse incident to campaign for Khushi leaving AR. He recognizes that a connection has been made between the Raizadas and the Guptas and he has to sever it. Nice close-call moment when the phone rings (it's Anjali), he turns to pick up the phone---and Payal prevents him.

4. I really didn't understand how Shyam's analogy influenced Khushi away from the frenzied jalebi-making. But he does succeed. And everyone seems really pleased by it. Buaji praises his support during the crisis to Bawji. And Shyam puffs with pride. It's a cringe moment.

5. Let me get this out of the way---I really love that ivory night suit Khushi is wearing. She looks so fragile. She's livid and she's disturbed. She can't stop thinking about Arnav. And he can't stop thinking about her. Akaash's comment, "you look like you had a bad night," was not well-received. The man has not slept. And he is heading to work---perhaps curious whether Khushi will turn up.

Maya,

One phenomenal episode. Amazing they used to be able to pack so much into a 20 minute show, when in last episodes things absolutely dragged through. So, Khushi and Arnav do not seem able to stop thinking of each other. Anjali telling Arnav she can see behind the ASR mask is so spot on. She is the only who can, barring Khushi, who already gets a sense of the care behind the atrocities he perpetuates almost continuously against her. Interesting you mention finding the chink in his ASR armour. Yes, she does that. Arnav is irresistible in this one. I agree it was most endearing to see him listening in on the conversation between Anjali and Payal. Buaji's summation about the brother making her 'behaal' and the sister later calling to ask 'haal chal' super too. As I said before, I brushed up in my Hindi considerably after IPK! Hehe!

I like the Anjali and Arnav dynamic in this one. She is categorical in chastising him like a mother would for his actions in traumatizing Khushi. He is honest in saying he has no idea why he acts this way. Shyam and Buaji moments truly cringeworthy! Shashi is also determined Khushi won't work again in that office. Akash notices the smallest nuances in his Bhai, although Arnav typically gives him no reasons for his exhausted demeanor. And the Raizada women are at it again...Nani trying to get Arnav's alliance fixed up with Brijesh ji's daughter Vidya has me laughing! Imagine hamara khadoos Raizada married to this girl, who looks like a cow! Or do I mean sheep here?! Haha! Sorry for getting judgemental, but no one but Khushi Kumari Gupta will now do as heroine! Khushi is also dressed and ready to get back to the battlefield...as PR the precap. Exciting times!

Best,

Anu

Buaji (and her nemesis Mami) get the best lines in IPK, don't they?
They are both wonderful grey characters.
Hindi is wonderfully succinct. But I often struggle to understand Buaji's Hindi.

I'm glad you made that point about pacing. I didn't realize how fast IPK moves. I have been test-driving several serials recently and even though some appeal, I find myself getting impatient with them.

Yes, the resignation episode contains my favourite Khushi monologue. I get goosebumps at the thought of these coming face-to-face after last night.

Ditto! Like you goosebumps it is with the upcoming episode where Khushi walks in to deliver her resignation to the lord of the manor! Loved that scene which is shot with a wide angled lens...it is a panning shot of the entire living room, and has Arnav at the top of the stairs and Khushi standing a little ways inside the front door...and truly something smouldering about their chemistry here, Maya. They never truly looked so fabulous in any scene later either...both were obviously getting tired towards the end of the show and no amount of make up could actually hide the strain. But here...it was electrifying...was it the combination of colors, the vast expanse of the Shantivan living room, the fury that emanated in equal measure in both, or a combination of all these? This was a brilliant episode...

Cannot wait to debate this one!

I did not get Anjali here. When Arnav clearly said he does not love Lavanya and he will never marry her why does she still want them to be together? Naniji expected him to say yes to her rishtas at this juncture. One withering look from ASR they all will run with their tails between their legs.

I don't wish to contradict you, Pari, but I believe Arnav said, "I will not leave Lavanya nor will I marry her." Am I mistaken? No mention either of being in love or not being on love.

You are right Maya. He does not explicitly say that. But he says , there is no place for love in my life or I do not believe in love or something like that. To me it meant he would be with Lavanya as long as she is ok with this arrangement , if not he can easily move on to another woman.

Ah! I see your inference.
I have a different take. Will you hear it?
Recall when Anjali asks Arnav: You don't want to get married or you don't want to marry Lavanya?
I think this is germane. Arnav will never be with a woman he might fall in love with because of his father's history. This is why when he realizes he is drawn to Khushi he tries to destroy her. Crush love under his heel.
So he plays it safe with Lavanya---someone whom he cares for, can enjoy on his terms. I think if Nani would have not become so entrenched, just left it---Lavanya and Arnav would have eventually fallen away. His attachment to her grows because Nani pushes so.

Yes. Anjali did ask him that and it is a pertinent question. But he does not believe in the institution called marriage nor in an emotion called love because of his own father.
His father proved that marriage is not going to prevent a couple from falling apart. Even though they loved each other enough to get married, they might fall out of love and seek other partners.
His father might have loved his mom at one point but it faded away. His father behaved the same way as Shyam. He did not want to divorce his mother , neither did he stop his clandestine affair with the other woman. After seeing this Arnav stopped believing in ever after.
So for now he is fine with Lavanya on his own terms. He does not feel the need to think any further about this relationship. Whether he accepts or not only Nani's goading made him bring Lavanya home.
When he said, I will not leave Lavanya neither will I marry her, I do not think he meant that he wants to be with Lavanya forever without marriage. He only meant at that particular moment he will not marry her neither will he leave her to marry some other girl.
Eventually he acknowledged love but he maintained his view on marriage, that it is not needed for two people to be together forever.
But I am not sure why he resists Khushi so much.
