IPKKND Nostalgia: Episode 021

Lisa's Coat

1. When I watched this episode my first thought was, "Oh, Puh-leeze! Surely the Writers could have devised actual office-y assignments for Arnav to hand Khushi. Mountains of filing. Heaps of photocopying...keep it real, Peeps!" But my second thought wiped that smug smile off my face. That these tasks are becoming increasingly absurd tells the viewer that Arnav---the King of Rationalism---is no longer rational. Khushi has gotten under his skin. He is unlike himself. Surely love cannot be too far behind.

2. The Writers have also another objective. They must convince viewers that Khushi is no light-weight. By the time that resignation scene takes place (my favourite Khushi monologue!) we must absolutely know that she is An Extraordinary Heroine. And that will not happen if Khushi resigns merely due to the volume of work and unreasonable hours. These scenes now are building a legitimacy for Khushi's eventual resignation. For that the tasks have to be clearly outrageous. The environment must be shown as abusive. The demands must test her moral code. And as we'll soon see---be dangerous.

3. Lisa is, of course, necessary to this episode. Her drama drives the action. But she also serves three other functions. The viewer sees that however difficult Lavanya is, she is no Lisa. She is not unhinged. And for Lavanya there is a lesson in humility. No matter who you are, a superlative version of you will at some point enter the room and dethrone you. To be the second-best diva in the room doesn't quite work. And she is deeply uncomfortable as Lisa flirts with Arnav. I think the writers also want us to see how indifferent Arnav is to a Lisa-type. We won't love him if he is a sycophant. Now, Sisters, what I wish to know is did Arnav orchestrate the juice incident or did he just get lucky?

4. Nice little moment between Nani and Mami when for a split-second they forget to dislike each other and unite in happiness for Anjali. And it shows that they can come together; they have mutual interests. This episode also gives the viewer the first strong clue about Shyam's identity: the symmetry of one man informing that he will be leaving; and another man informing that he will be arriving.

5. And this is also the episode where we are left with no ambiguity---Shyam has indeed fallen for Khushi.

The writers needed to show a pragmatic, simple Lucknow girl who could have managed routine office work but was tested to the limit by the unreasonable demands of her akdoo boss - as you said the test was of the culture and belief systems she held dear and also of taking her outside her comfort zone physically - as you said, the car park and guest house assignments. His sole objective was to break Khushi and he was doing it quite well. Sooner or later she was sure to cave in. Lisa was certainly brought in to highlight our hero's charms to the female sex, and as a sticking point for Lavanya. I do believe Khushi was equally rattled by her open flirting with Arnav. The coat I am certain was one time Arnie got lucky! Sim and Pam continue their machinations to make Khushi leave the establishment in disgrace! Arnav looks his movie star best here, he also seems to be noticing the inconsequential - not my words but Sim's and Pam's! - Chamkeeli a lot lately...it is not the insubstantial Lisas or Lavanyas of the world but the salt of the earth Miss Gupta that floats his boat...this also tells us how much ASR cherishes people who are self made and wiling to do what it takes to get to their goals...not those who swank and swan it around him, or indeed those who eat humble pie!

Both you and Aquagal mention that Khushi is affected by Arnie & Lisa's kissy-kissy...

Will have to look again. I thought K was shocked by Lisa's display of leg and startled by her entourage-style entry. And then indifferent.

IPKKND Nostalgia: Episode 022

Red Saree

1. Let me begin with the end: one of my favourite recurring motifs in IPKKND is Arnav's signature final look back at Khushi before exiting a room. Today we have the first. I think that more effectively conveys that he is captivated than the long looks. It's a man wanting to make a strong exit---yet he just cannot resist one more glance. Something to store in his image bank.

2. That Arnav allows them to continue the shoot with her in the red saree is also a tacit admission that he approves of Khushi's appearance. He is so ready to punish her at every turn that if he truly did not believe that this look would positively serve ARGroup then he would have gone against the opinions of Akaash and Jeff. When Jeff says, "hot and beautiful, yet traditional" Arnav has this odd look, because he does agree---yet he despises this girl. When Arnav says, "theek hai," Khushi is surprised. She knows that if Arnav wanted to make the situation difficult, he could have, but he shown some benevolence.

3. However much Arnav is taken with Khushi in that first moment, as viewers we are more so. She is Our Girl and to have her be admired is a compliment to us. We can feel a bit smug. Especially because she makes Arnav forget himself. That itself is a coup. This is also our first Rabbe Ve (RV). The first of countless RVs.

4. That moment when Khushi's pallu drops and she realizes that Arnav has entered the room and has his eyes have been on her---this is interesting. Her eyes also refuse to move from his. Why? Because however naive, she sees something in his eyes which she has never seen before. And then the spell breaks and they both look guilty. Nicely directed.

5. Khushi asks Shyam to stay behind and he agrees to. For this he must disappoint Anjali. He makes a choice and it is a significant moment.
