I am a late joiner here and I'll try to cover up with what I missed. Honestly, my joining the IPKKND-watch group was very late. I was still school when it started and my Paa preferred my watching MTV than Hindi serials. And saying that for him is a lot. I caught upon the moments again when I was in college and had pools of free internet, that is a boon in India. And all credits for that go to DIsmailVegamze. Such a charm. This was the YouTube uploaded who would cut all the episodes and present the main clips in Love Scenes.
I agree and accept that I cannot be a full-blown IPKKND fanatic until I know all the characters and I submit that before i vuod do any of that, I was caught up in the web of these beautiful fan-fictions in, if I remember correctly, Jun-2014.

And has this been a heartfelt journey-ah, how to explain.

And you paved my way towards the adoring-the-mushy-heart with all sensibilities required, for I was a love-story lover who would rebuke herself for watching Korean drama and secretly reading Sylvia Day, self-judging them to be trashy. That was the time that my love for novels switched to my bulk-gulp of pretty, explosive fan-fics and my falling deeper and deeper. And I am still lying in the Grand Canyon and boy, is it beautiful from here.

Arnav in our serial is such a provider. As Expel suitabely points out in Shaadi, he wants to be the only provider around. And does he ever do anything half-hearted!

Surprisingly, Khushi is surprisingly very similar to him in this aspect because they usually say that opposites attract. Our -Khushi gives a glimpse of Kashaf Murtaza from Zindagi Gulzar Hai.

I liked your parallel with Darcy-Lizzy-Wickham. Oh, does a story ever leave a reader! And I couldn't hold myself before drawing a similar parallel to Sacrlette-Rhett-Ashley trio at several instances. There are several, several differences. But several, several uncanny resemblances.

A lot much can be said and still not be enough, but one thing remains unbeatable. There was something which went irrevocably right with IPKKND and it changed several, several lives. In that, in the words of Saroj Khan and Madhuri Dixit, it was Puhh-fect.

Pleased to find you here. Loved reading your comment. I always love hearing the story of how IPKKND entered a viewer's consciousness. That in itself speaks of IPK's magic, because everyone seems to remember their first glimpse of the show. As they say, what impacts you, you will remember.

I started watching -Zindagi Gulzar Hai- last year when I was studying Urdu. My teacher recommended it. And I confess I didn't enjoy Kashaf as a character. But that's just me---I think I prefer more rompish heroines.

I noticed that you have five bullet points for each episode and remembered your talking about 5 and its significance.

Shyam was actually quite likeable in the first few episodes, I thought. He even looked different. As his evil intentions were disclosed, they made him look and laugh more like a villian too :-) He is definetely smooth-talker if nothing else and had the whole Gupta family fall for that charm, as he did the Raizada family!

Yes, the Rule of Five. My OCD. haha
I shared it's significance in the serial -khushi- via Yash.

That Shyam was such a charm merchant. Really well-written character. I'm half in love with him myself! Even though I know his character.

IPKKND Nostalgia: Episode 011

Appointment Letter

1. Ah! At last I can confirm with my own ears that there was indeed mention of a Dhruv in IPKKND. In 2012, I had come across several posts on India Forums speculating on a brother/cousin named Dhruv. When he would arrive. What his role would be. Now I know that those speculations were not born from the wild imagination of viewers; the speculations were raised by Nani's own words. There is that convention in writing that if you give a character a name, the reader expects to meet him. At the very least, they expect to hear of him again. This suggests that the Creative Team intended to do something with Dhruv at a future point. And then decided against it.

2. Dhruv is not the only new name in this episode. Lavanya is mentioned. Repeatedly. I like how the writers have built up our expectations for that meeting. Often in dramatic serials, it is the heroine who receives this treatment. The heroine is mentioned several times by other characters before we finally catch a glimpse of her. In IPKKND it is an honour bestowed on Miss Lavanya Kashyap. And on Lakshmi.

3. My favourite scene in this episode begins with the jalebi-making. By now we know that this is Khushi's coping mechanism. The camera only has to show us the ingredients coming together and we need no further proof that Khushi is upset. It's clever to give a character an idiosyncrasy which can act as shorthand to convey necessary information to viewers efficiently.

4. This scene also highlights Khushi's dependence upon Payal. Yes, Khushi depends on Payal. I've mentioned before that I believe we each play a role in our families. They are not equal roles. They are unique to our abilities. Payal is not active and assertive like Khushi----and for this she is often criticized by viewers----but she does have a significant role. She is Khushi's safe place to land. She is Khushi's tower of strength. I also loved that brief sequence on how Khushi had imagined their future as wives. I felt their loss. That scene reminded me that Khushi and Payal are young women. Young women with hopes and dreams which have been cruelly squashed. Here they are, stuck in Delhi with Buaji. When their rightful place is to be with their parents at their lovely Lucknow haveli, enjoying those things which young women do.

5. I was pleased that Buaji came with the thali to bid an auspicious start to Khushi's brilliant new career. Clearly she has reconciled herself to Khushi's decision to work. And it is not surprising to me that she is quick to ask Khushi about her salary. Now why is it, Sisters, that when I stuff my mouth with laddoos, I look revolting, but when Ms Irani does it, she looks cute. Humph!

Yes, this addiction is powerful. Almost five years for me---and I am not less, but more enchanted with this jodi.

Haha, on the Ladoo, Maya! What an unfair world that our ms Irani looks delectable stuffing her face with anything! And goodness knows she got to eat above and beyond the average heroine's intake in IPK! Khushi Kumari Gupta was permanently stuffing her face, eating more than her fair share of Ladoo, parathas, pakode, jalebi and gol gappe...and yet look at her...wonder where all that food went...whereas poor me - I am eternally battling the bulge and everything else and have a real 'see food' problem as my husband likes to jest! 😆 Of course I also recall here Sanaya Irani's sound byte during the IPK Ek Jashn days where she said she absolutely loves all things sweet, barring jalebi! I thought that was a real irony, don't you?! Imagine Lucknow's jalebi baai making such a claim! Felt sadly let down that day!!

But back to the episode...hm, yes Buaji reconciles somewhat that Khushi will be Khushi and needs to be allowed the freedom to run if not fly...she also realizes I am sure that the money will help! The scene where Khushi and Payal imagine theselves married to brothers and enjoying themselves was truly such a lovely one...or were they brothers after all? I remember Khushi once telling Payal that this was one of her dreams...

Yes, the elusive Dhruv! Not only Nani but also Wikipedia on IPKKND brings up his name, would you believe it! Now you know what a hardcore obsessed fan I am! Haha! Can probably get that Ph D in IPKKND rather easily if they offered such a thing! 😆 It truly would have been marvelous to have another brother or cousin included. Given the number of imaginative fan fiction tomes the show has produced we would have still more fodder to write about...but yes, some of those also mention Dhruv!

This was such a great episode, one where we truly connect with Khushi who needs to be strong for her family, one cannot help feel sorry for this young woman who radiates happiness to the world at large while going through a not really happy life. And yes, Payal is certainly her safety net, always around as a support system. We only realize the importance of this safety net when it disappears...Payal is just such a presence in Khushi's life. Beautiful!

I am here Maya ...a brutal day been caught up and I still am.
Hmm the best scene for me here was the way Khushi and Payal spoke to each other over the phone in Khushi's dream. It was so ironic that Khushi imagined to speak to her sister on a phone which meant they ahdn;t ever thought they will be married to two brothers and will live in the same house. I may be too quick to judge but well it was a show of Khushi's purity of heart. Her link up with ASR and the subsequent events and Payash meets happened in two different ways altogether and one had no idea about the other. Destiny at play.

Anyway Khushi's jalebi making skill was clearly shown to us all and LOL haven't eaten Ladoos but yes for sure Sanaya did look rather cute while stuffing herself with laddoos and even with samosas in the later epi of IPK. 😛

I wanted to say something about this.
When non IPK-Sisters & Brothers ask me about my writing, I hesitate or I mimimize the pleasure I take in writing these serials, because I perceive that the content I enjoy writing/reading/watching will be deemed unworthy by them.
I'm really working on this attitude within myself. To own what I love. Without apology or shame.

IPKKND Nostalgia: Episode 012

Meet La-1-Ya

1. The season which begins with this episode and concludes with Khushi's resignation contain some of my favourite IPKKND scenes. Like many of our Sisters, I have a thing for office romance. It probably helps that I've never worked in an office setting otherwise reality would speedily check my fantasies.

2. I confess that when I was watching IPKKND in 2012, I didn't enjoy Lavanya. I know many did. And rightly so. She is a well-written character and the role is realized by a very capable, very attractive actress. The casting also contributes to her likeability. Though her exterior is flashy, there is palpable warmth there. And her first scene with Arnav shows that she is loving. Also, from story perspective, Lavanya cannot be scripted as a typical cold-hearted serial vamp. If she was than we would question our Hero's judgment because it is clear that he sincerely cares about her.

3. The Arnav that I find compelling (and try to capture in my writing) is the Arnav we see in the first scene with Lavanya. He is not cold and indifferent, it's just that he is very focused and serious about his work. He is capable of affection but he doesn't display it. Yes, he is shouty but that is when his work is compromised. As we saw in the scene at the office. Did you notice at the end of the episode when Lavanya gave Khushi that ultimatum----she sounded an awful lot like Arnav. When Arnav offers someone a choice, it is clear that there is only one possible outcome. And it is the outcome he desires. Lavanya has clearly learnt from the best.

4. As a student writer, I thought the IPKKND writers found a very clever solution to a tricky challenge. Consider this: A romance requires that the Hero and Heroine share space. But these two despise each other. If there was some spark of interest then they would create their own opportunities to meet. But they won't; so the writers must. How to accomplish this? Two ways: Have Khushi enter his home or his work. They decide on the office first and save the home invasion for a later track. But even so, Arnav would never employ her. Nor would Lavanya. However Lavanya hiring Khushi is more believable than Arnav doing it. But will this be believable to viewers? It's clear that Khushi is highly unsuitable. Lavanya would never select her unless under some duress. Enter Sonia. Brilliant! Create an even greater evil so that in contrast Khushi seems like a favourable choice.

5. By the way, I know this is a fashion house and the costuming has to be such that Khushi appears out-of-place and very unlike Lavanya----however, I found Lavanya's costume more club than corporate. I think a fitted suit or a little-black-dress would have been a better choice and would still convey style and modernity. I notice that on South Asian serials, whenever the stylist wants to suggest a female character is modern and fashionable they resort to showing more skin. I'm a believer of modesty in dress so perhaps this is just my bias.
