Chapter 1: Parampara
"Why would anyone want to write stuff on paper stuff and mail the stuff?" Lavanya glared at the blank sheet of paper as if it personally offended her by merely existing.
"I agree," Payal chimed in from Lavanya's left. "Writing to a pen-pal is so 80's," she groaned in dramatic exaggeration.
"I dare you to use stuff' five times in a grammatically correct statement." Khushi quipped from Lavanya's right.
"I mean come on, this is 1999. Haven't they heard of Hotmail?" Lavanya was still glaring. "I don't want to write to someone who turns out to be a stalker or worse, another admirer." Lavanya said as a matter of fact.
"You never cease to surprise us with your f**ked up priorities La," Khushi replied. "Besides this whole pen-pal thing is this school's tradition. Suck it up."
Lavanya turned to see Khushi pulling out walkman and earphones from her bag. "Are you still listening to that awful disco mix tape again?" Lavanya asked.
Khushi shrugged. "They make me deaf to the world." She admitted. Lavanya, to her credit only snickered.
"Now. About letter writing. In 1999. Thoughts." Lavanya's voice was business like.
"Sounds like a plot from a cheesy movie." Khushi replied. "It is incredibly cliche and absolutely filmy to get students from girls and boys boarding schools to write letters to each other. Its recipe for two dozen bad student-romance movies, crappy horror movies with misplaced sex scenes and there will be too many heart shaped glittery greeting cards around here with bunch of flowery prose written generously over them."
"You are all puppies and sunshine today, huh?" Payal didn't bother hiding sarcasm.
Khushi grinned in response. "I've got someone with initials ASR. What have you two got?" Khushi asked the other two.
"NK." Lavanya replied.
"AkSR." Payal replied next. "I think the k' exists just to differentiate between Khushi's ASR and this dude."
Payal needed logic and rationality to survive. However when she befriended La and Khushi, logic and rationality were temporarily unavailable. She didn't think just because the three girls were only four year olds when they had first met had anything to do with it. She had several hundred instances when she could have walked away from the two but had stuck around anyway. When you have two girls of your age fighting for you on the school ground because an older boy made you cry, you are kind of stuck with them permanently.
"They sound stupid." Lavanya decided. "Their initials sound extra stupid." She added for good measure.
Payal didn't bother to respond. Khushi had already started writing her letter.
ASR,
I know like me, you are in last year of school as this whole pen-pal thing is for final year students. Hopefully we will have one round of letters exchange after which, meh.
To complete the cliche that has been this experience, here are some things about me: I like disco music. Obscure Hindi songs from this decade. Absolutely crappy movies (horrible, the better). Archie comics. Ice Candy (not the creamy but watery ones). Ink Pens. Violin. Piano. Leonardo Di Caprio. Hair ribbons (satin textured ones). Lollipop. The whole computer thingy. I can't hold conversations on Yahoo chat. X-Files is better than Friends.
You?

PS: A song for you: Tera Naam Pasand Hai [Gunda Mawali]. I dare you to listen.
Khushi looked up from her wrote that was already crinkled, had an ink stain and couple of scratches.
"I need extra sheet." Lavanya said. Khushi looked at her blankly. "I am writing about ME ladies. One puny page isn't enough to fill the awesomeness that I am."
Khushi sincerely believed that statement.
Payal smartly kept her mouth shut.
The girls passed their glued envelopes to the girl who was collecting them and forgot all about it.
Until the responses arrived a week later.
