I was wondering what is it that compels CVs and PHs to stray so far away from the original epic- be it Ramayana or Mahabharata ? Is it only by distorting beyond recognition that they can "connect" to today's youth ?

Let me confess I haven't even watched one episode of this fiction-serial. A few stray reviews in the beginning and a few stray comments have been enough to put me off.

Why is it so difficult for the makers of any mytho serial(especially a well established one like Ramayana) to stick to the original ? Is it imperative to give a romantic twist to every scene - only then will it catch the attention of today's youth ? Is it necessary to devalue this epic to a rom-com ?

What do you guys have to say ? For instance there are three whole sargas describing the grandeur and the rituals of ashwamedha and putrakameshti yagna.

If for instance some sane CV decides to depict them honestly, with their Vedic significance,will you -the youth- not "connect with it"?

If instead of the make believe Rama- Sita / Laksmana- Urmilla scenes the glory of King Janaka is depicted will you the youth find it "boring" ?

In 15 sargas, Sage Shatananda describes the powers of Vishwamitra. It has more masala than the CVs can ever put together. WiIl you not want to know about it ? Will you not want to improve your knowledge about this great epic ?

I am yet to see a serial which shows Bharata being born on the day after Rama's birth. In all serials four maids come in succession announcing the births - reminiscent of a kindergarten roll- call.

The fact that Ramayana has survived for so many many centuries is sufficient proof of its acceptance. Then why do the CVs need to bring in their own angle completely sidestepping Valamiki's ?

Ramayana maybe a parable on the surface, but there are a lot of Shruti- smriti truths hidden in it.

Will the youth not enjoy if these are highlighted ? Or aren't the youth interested in knowing the real but are content with whatever crap the CVs dish out in the name of Ramayana

I dont even know abt the 15 sargas , I guess the same with many of my frnds , Its not that we enjoy it or not . Its that we are never taught to read it this way . Whether it be the books like Sita's sister or shows like SKR , we have always seen only One side of ghe coin.

In fact , we never know that there is other side as well .

Obviously , We are enjoying Janak and his wisdom , whether it be his parenting , or acceptance of daughter's equally just like sons , or his independent way of thinking to allow his daughter's to gurukul back then in tretaYug itself . #InspiresMeOfcourse.

Coming to romantic scenes , Yes we do enjoy them . And I can say that we cannot do without them , is ramayan not about the Epic Love saga of SiyaRam . ? Is it not about the sacrifices for their partners ? Yes , whats wrong in it , if we enjoy it the most.
And we are not going nuts over OTT scenes , We are loving the divinity in Siya-Ram , Eye talks and their understand , We are impressed how they are Independent bt still together.

Giving Ram lengthy slokas for narration is more like what we used to see in BnW movies , time changed , ppl changed , we don't even understand hindi properly , Ypu cant expect us to understand that slokas. Short dialogues is what we prefer .
As a sanskrit student for 5 yrs , I love the language , Its a beautiful language no doubt bt more than language its the Impact it has on viewers , If they can grab more audience with this lil Hindi its better...Atleast they are trying to put some Idea of Ramayan in our Minds.

SKR is not all about Romance , If you watch the show there is lot more to it. They are showing Ayodhya's Strict rules which are highly against a woman's independence like mothers cannot attend the wedding of their sons , on the other side they are showing How Independence should be given to a woman to make the things better like in Mithila .

Not just that , Ram speaks on every minor issue , clears his throat and speaks boldly , Even that captivates us . Sita , not being just a fragile princess , Questions every wrong deed she comes across . What more they can teach us inthis modern society ?

I agree , they could make it some more realistic , bt they cant loose their TRP as well.

Varaali, Serial makers have several excuses for " What makes them stray from original version of epic

VR (that is available now) is not the original version ; even VR is interpolated at several places

There are conflicts because we have combined different literary sources

We have tried to portray pov of different characters ..

and not forget their disclaimer " Serial has been made for the sake of entertainment "

To add to this, Sab chalta hai attitude of viewers is also responsible isnt it?

Very interesting post..

I do not believe in twisting of storyline for the sake of trps ...

I have seen many historical soaps turned into daily soaps and I don't support this ...

But if you actually sit down to watch SKR you will realise it has given an analytical approach to the epic..

Nowadays people have started questioning.. They will not believe in something if it is simply served on their plate ..

If you say Janak was a Rajrishi , had no moh , maya , they would say why?

If he wore the same costume as Dashrat and mithila had same aura as Ayodhya what would have been the difference.. It's actually first time I am actually getting to know and believe why he was called like that ...

Every scene they show has a lot of meaning ... Ravan's comments about the room being small and Malyavan's attitude towards Janak were shown... They didn't simply end it over there.. They showed Dashrat living in the same room and appreciating the simplicity of Mithila ... Thus even Dashrat was as great as Janak..

Here we saw Ram divinity being established through his words , his actions, we were not simply told to believe he was divine.. His words made us do that...

About Sita asking questions is just a quality of good student.. I am loving to see her as an empowered women...

First convo of Ram Sita was soo beautifully written...I don't know whether they actually met or not.. But its good to know Ram's views upon polygamy... And Sita's wise thoughts about being together yet independent...

Now people due to wrong understanding of epics start calling the religion backward... So I think if a bit analytical approach is given to our epics , so that new gen can understand the essence , it would be better ... Visuals , graphics , a few romantic scenes( which till now have been subtle and sweet) are just adding to the beauty.. If our gods were great why not glorify their greatness with visuals..

So any change for the good is what I appreciate... That's all

Yes there are many facts that CV's ignore. This is merely a fictional version. Sometimes we feel like all the four couples behave like present generation youth. Its that the show is far better that all saas bahu shows we follow it .

Ram's character has lot of prominence than any other
Adapting the story from many versions other than VR CVs always confuse us😕. I feel like other works apart from Ram Charit Manas they mostly describe Ramayan in a fictional way that is why we feel the show more deviated from the original VR.

i find Ram's character is shaped well now a lot of improvement in his dialouges quite meaningful and useful conversations👏👏.
They should give importance to others opinions and the greatness of each and every character should be discussed.
Sita's character i must say shaped well and dialouges of her are quite meaningful👏. At times when she talk with her sisters again i feel like any common sisters who are too much enthusiastic in the marriage rituals😆😆. But its ok Sita's character is far better😳.
Coming to Urmila and Lakshman's story this track attracts many people as the characters mostly behave as present day couple😳. I think Cvs should concentrate more on this.
I love to see Lakshmila Nok-Jokh but even then this track makes the SKR modernised.
And now its proceeding the same way in Mandavi and Bharat's case😲
and Shatrugan and Shruthkeerthi😲
Lakshman Teasing his brothers really so cute😳
And with all the parallel budding love stories i think CV's are finding it difficult to concentrate on others😆😆😆
I personally love SKR and i think once the marriage is accomplished😳 then as the story progresses then the story goes into serious mode i feel CVs are showing all these just to highlight the bond between all the four couples. After that they all have to face a hard time.

What ever it is I love SKR and its CV's who has to decide the way they should present the story.

I agree with what aditi is saying. To add, whatever conversations have been shown so far show Ram and Sita's similarity in thoughts and values and their increasing respect for each other, even the interactions between the urmila lakshman, are leading up to love in a very appropriate way. There are not showing a typical Bollywood romance for anyone to be upset. Also none of the charachters has been butchered. People at mithila have been shown as simple and at Ayodhya as rule following. Isn't that true. Even Rishi Gautam is shown as human who got carried away in his anger. kaikeyi is being shown as impulsive and emotional which was the reason hence being manipulated by manthara.

Yes this serial or version is not subtle. Using dialogues and visuals they are stating everything. ram's speech in Swayamvar is not part of the original but isn't what he said consistent with his Charachter, but it is needed today for many of us who have not read he epic and our only point of reference is previous tv shows or ram Lila during dussera

The show is not deviating from the epic in its essence. Just taking a few creative liberties to highlight the thought process and values of each charachter, whether it is Dasrat, kaikeyi, kaushalya, Sumitra, Janak sunaina p, Ravan, Ram and Sita and the brothers and sisters. Unlike other shows that I had seen so far this show for the first time showed what a wonderful woman Sumitra is. What her virtues are

SO FAR the show has been creative but consistent with the epic, and I seriously hope they maintain it.
