CHAPTER 12

THE BIRD OF PEACE...

"Shahenshah, aapke yojna ke anusaar nagar ki chote chote galiyon me, bazaryon me or aas paas ki gaayon me guptcharyon ko bhej ke jo baat pata chala hay usse hum hayraan rahe gay!!"[Your majesty, the news came from the spies those have been sent to markets, lanes and small villages according to your plan, have left us in shock!]

Raja Todarmal and Mahesh Das were having a walk in the garden along with the emperor while discussing on the current situations of the state... Jalal looked at Todarmal's eyes before he could complete...

"Yehi khabar hay na ki aam admiyon ko kaise majhaab ki naam par shahenshah ke khilaaf varkaya ja raha hay?"[Is not the news that how the common men are instigated against the emperor in the name of religion?] He smiled worriedly. "Or majhabi sikh ki naam par naujawanyon ko shahenshah ke khilaaf bagawat karne ke liye tayyar kiya ja raha hay?" [And the young lads are being trained for revolution against empire in the name of religious education.]

Todarmal nodded his head in anxiety. "Aab kya kare Shahenshah? Kya yeh sare afwa fyalane walyon ko kayed..." [What to do now your majesty? Should we arrest some of those rumor-spreading persons?]

"Uuhuuh..." Jalal shook his head in negative gesture. "Is tarha se kuch aadmiyon ko griftaar karke hum jyada kuch haasil nehi kar payenge. Ulta humara baadnami hogi awam me!"[We cannot achieve much by arresting some persons like this. Rather my reputation will be at stake...] He sighed. "Iss saajis ke piche jo jo satil dimag kaam kar rahe hay usse pakarna hoga! O log kyon kyon ho sakta hay iss bare me hum puri tarha se andhere me nehi hay... Baas...Sabood chahiye. Kuch aisa chahiye jisse hum saltanant ki andar ki gaddaryon or bahar ka dusmanyon ki bich hue iss jot ko tor sake...Mahesh Das sahab?" he looked at Mahesh Das. "Aap boliye, Kabul se koi khaas paigaam aya hay? " [We have to reach those smart brains who are at behind of this conspiracy. I can guess about them, but only we need proof. We need something which can break the connection between the insurgents and the outsider enemies...Mahesh Das Sahab? Say me what is the latest news from Kabul? ]

"Jaise sandeshyen aate hay usse naya koi sandesh nehi aya hay Shahenshah... Baas ek hi naya khabar hay ki Mah-Chuchak Begam aajkal dharmkarm me jyada byast raheti hay..."[Nothing is new your majesty...Only a new news is Mahchuchak Begam is spending quality of times with religious rituals nowadays] he smiled. "Waise bhi, sidhi raastyon se aasli khabar kaha aata hay! Parantu saltanant ki sabse saktisali byaktitwa jab khud teri rastyon se khabar le rahe hay, tab hum kyu samay nasht kare..."[And also, actual news does not come in straight ways! But when the greatest personality of the nation himself is receiving news from an indirect way, why should we waste time?] He gave his famous witty smile as his majesty was looking at him without a blink and with a content smirk at the corner of his lip...

"Kuch jyada hi saatil hay aap..." [You are too much cunning...] His majesty uttered to his courtier. This man is attracting him more and more day by day.

Suddenly Jalal reduced his pace of walking. His little shaalis' had been gathered beneath a big tree, chanting among them... Jalal went closer to them.

"Kya guphtugoo ho raha hay?" he asked. "Zara hum bhi sune?" [What discussion is going on? Let me hear it too?]

"Jijasa..." one girl screamed in relief as if she has got the heaven in hand. "Dekhiye na Bharat ne kya kiya?" [Jijasa... Look what Bharat has done?]

Bharat, one of the young nephews of Jodha, who has already become a threat for his family members with his dangerous mischief and monkey-tricks in this age of 9-10, was standing nearby with a pouted face and a bow in hand. Jalal smiled to him and shook the little girl's chin.

"Kya kiya hay Bharat Singh ne?" He asked. [What has Bharat Singh done?]

Another tiny girl came in front sobbing. She carefully showed something hidden under her chunri to her Jijasa... Jalal saw a dead white pigeon severely pierced with an arrow.

"Dekho na Jijasa..." The girl wept. "Bharat ne iss chote se panchi ko maar dia..."[See Jijasa... Bharat has killed this little bird...]

"Humne nishane me tir chalaya baas!!" [I only hit the target that's all!!] Bharat gave his excuse immediately. "Tum phuphasa se pucho, o bhi sikaar me jake pashu-pakshiyon ka badh karte hay!"[Ask Uncle, he also kills animals in hunting!]

"Kyu maroge? Kya bigara tha iss pakshi ne tumhra?"[Why will you kill? What has it done with you?] 3-4 girls attacked him together. Bharat showed them his tongue and they became furious. It seemed that a small battle is going to be wedged very soon between the team of girl and the solo boy. So, being a passionate hunter and archer himself Jalal had no choice but to defend the boy with wonderful target, despite knowing that the girls are stronger in both logic and number. He tried to make peace becoming a negotiator.

"Dekhiye shahezadiyan, sikar karna srif ek raja ka shokh hi nehi, uske liye ek sikh bhi hota hay...Aab Bharat to baas aapni tirandazi ki sikh ka riwaz kar rahe the... Inhe iis parindey ko marna nehi chahiye tha par..." [Look my princesses, hunting is not only an entertainment for kings, but also a practice... Now Bharat was practicing archery only...He should not have killed this bird but... ]

His speech suddenly stopped... Parindey! Aman ki parindey! Pigeon!!![Bird! Bird of peace! Pigeon!!]

Mahesh Das surprisingly noticed how the light-hearted and gay smile of the emperor suddenly was covered by an uncanny excitement of finding something. He eagerly almost snatched the dead bird from the lap of the little girl without uttering a word and keenly started to examine that thoroughly... All had noticed the weird behavior of the majesty; even the children forgot their quarrel and starred at Shahenshah's face with popped eyes...

"Kya hua Shahenshah!" Todarmal came forward and asked. [What happened Shahenshah!]

"Todarmal Sahab!" Jalal exhaled. "Gaur se iss kabutar ko dekhiye!" [Todarmal Sahab! Notice this pigeon carefully!]

Todarmal saw, and Mahesh Das too. "Are yeh pakshi to..."[This bird is...] shouted Mahesh Das pointing at the small red sign of the bird's throat... "Kisi khas bajay se prasikhshit kiya gaya kabutar hay!"[specially trained for any special reason!]

" Or srif yehi nehi, yeh paigam ki len-den karta hay!"[Not only this. It also transfers messages!] Jalal pointed at the sign of the string that was still visible from its leg. It was definitely the mark of the thread which had been used to bind the message in the leg of this messenger pigeon. But there was no piece of paper, or any message with that.

"Bharat..." he asked softly to the boy. "Yeh kabutar aapko kaha mila?" [Bharat, where had you found this bird?]

From the haphazard chants and description of the children the summery they made out was that the children were playing at the ground and Bharat was trying to impress them with his archery. Suddenly they saw a white pigeon heading towards the backside of the fort and without waiting for a moment Bharat targeted that one, and it fell down.

"Kon pahele gaya tha iss panchhi ke paas?"[Who had gone to this bird first?] Jalal asked. Bharat came forward.

"Main..." he said. "Fir Sujata or Lila aake humse humara sikar chin liya..."[I...Then Sujata and Lila came and snatched my pray from me...]

"Tum to bohot acche tirandaaz ho!" jalal patted his back. "Accha yeh batao, tab koi or tha yeaha? Jab tum aaye the?"[You are a great archer! Okay, now tell me who else was here that time when you had come?]

"Nehi to...Kuch rakhshak ghum fir rahe the, par aas paas koi nehi tha..." he said. [None. Only some guards were roaming around...]

"Accha!"[I see!]

Jalal cared the body of the bird gently, and took out the arrow that had pierced the body. So this is the pigeon which is transferring all the secret news and signals of Hindustan to Kabul and connecting the rebels of the two distant lands! A small but highly trained bird, it did not know how it could have become a threat of Hindustan, and the little mischievous boy has no idea how his one arrow has become a key of all solutions that Jalal was trying to fetch these days...

"Mahesh Das ji jara dekhiye to jaha yeh kabutar gira tha uske aas paas koi paigam milte hay yeah nehi..." he said. "Inke baat se yeh zahir hota hay ki yeh kabutar paigaam leke aa raha tha...Or paigaam abhi aapni jayga pe nehi pauchha hay! O paigaam humare haat lagna chahiye..."[Mahesh Das ji see if you find any message near the place where the pigeon had fallen...It is confirmed from their statement that the pigeon was coming with the message and that has not reached its place! That should come to our hand...]

They started to search on the grass. A white piece of paper on the green carpet of grass is not too tough to find. But no such paper was there...

"Kuch dhund rahe hay aap phupasa?" Bharat asked. "Hum kuch madat kare?"[Are you searching anything uncle? Should I help?]

"Beta aapne iis kabutaar ke sath koi kagaj yeh fir aisa kuch dekha tha?" [My son had you noticed any paper like thing with the pigeon?] Jalal asked him. Bharat passed a most mischievous smirk...

"Agar main haa kahu to aap mujhe kya denge?" [If I tell yes then what will you give to me?]

Jalal became exited. "Dijiye o kagaj hume! Jo maangenge denge hum!"[Give me that paper. I will give you anything you want!]

"Wada kijiye aap hume yudhh me leke jayenge??"[Promise me that you will take me at war-field?] He told at once. Mahesh Das and Todarmal could not stop laughing. Jalal pulled his cheek affectionately and said "Aap jaise haatiyaar ko to hum aane wale jungyon ke liye bacha ke rakhe hay...Dijiye o kagaj hume.Hum aapko eksath 5 tir kaise nishane pe lagate hay o sikhayenge..." [I have to reserve the weapon like you for the future wars... Now give me the paper. I will teach you the tactics of hitting 5 arrows on target together]

"Sachhi??"[Really??] Bharat became excited. He at once took out a little piece of paper from his pocket and gave it to the emperor... "Yeh lijie...Yeh iis paanchi ki pair pe bandha hua tha... Sayad koi guptdhan ki sanket hay!"[Take it...It was fastened at the leg of that pigeon... I think it is a clue of treasure!] He whispered...

"Guptdhan hi hay!!"[It is treasure indeed!] Jalal chuckled and opened the paper. He cannot read, but by watching the fonts he clearly understood that the language is definitely not Hindi...There are some distinguished differences between the Indian and Central-Asian languages...

"Shahenshah!!!!!!!!!"

Jalal looked back hearing the scream. Yes it was Sareefuddin. He was starring at the emperor with a stupid, shocked and surprised face, and his eyes are directly pointed to the paper in the emperor's hand...

"Kya hua Sareef-Udddin? Tum achanak se yeaha?" [What happened Sarifuddin? Suddenly from where have you come?] Jalal asked.

Sareef-Uddin was speechless...Oh God the worst fear has become true this way!!!When his messenger informed him that he had found the princes and princesses had caught their messenger bird before it could come to his hand Sareef had thought that he will manage the kids and will receive the message himself! But before he could reach the secret code has been reached to the head-office and that too at the hand of the emperor!!

"Kya hua Sareef-uddin?"[What happened Sarifuddin?] Now his majesty was coming towards him. Sareef gulped...No! Nothing much has happened till now! The message is coded and there is no mention of Sareef... He can manage the situation still now...

"Kya hua?"[What happened?] Shahenshah was now in front of him! He placed his hand on Sareef's shoulder with a strange unreadable expression in his face...

"Ohh hum...hum aise hi..." Sareef tried hard to be normal but could not help himself from sweating and stammering like a fool... "Oh hum...hum kuch dhund..." [I...I was...I was actually I mean...I was searching something...]

"Dhund rahe the? Kya?"[You were searching? What?] Jalal caught his uncompleted word. And then tracing his shocked eyes on the piece of paper held in his hand he asked "Iss kagaj ko?"[This paper?]

"Nehi nehi jahanpanha!! Hum koi kagaj ko kyu dhundenge!! Hume to ii...iis b..bb..bare me pppata hi nehi tha!!" Sareef was now faltering terribly... "Hum...hum ek aan...aanng... aanguthi dhundne aye the!!!" [No no my lord!! Why would I search any paper!!I...I...d..don't know anything about it!! I was s..searching a...a...r..r..ring!!]

"Accha??"[Really?] Jalal uttered with a pointed look on his fingers. Most of the fingers were full of rings and the rest had no mark of wearing ring. "Kinte aanguthia pehente ho tum?"[How many rings do you wear?]

"J...jiii hu..humara nehi!!" Sareef tried to smile. "Bakshi ki!!Uski aanguthi gum ho gaya hay to maine socha..."[T..that was not mine!! Bakshi's! Her ring has lost so I thought...]

"Socha ki kyu na aapne kamre ko chorke ek aisa jaga me dhunda jaye jaha Bakshi aati hi nehi hay?" [Thought that why not to find a place where Bakshi has never come leaving the rooms?] Jalal smiled back.

"Nehi Shahenshah...matlab oo kal sayad ayi thi..."[No your highness...I mean perhaps she had come yesterday...] Sareef was running short of excuses.

"Accha thik hay choro! Yeh lo..."[Well leave that!! Take this...] Jalal handed the paper to him. Not only Sareef, even Todarmal and Mahesh was shocked to see his behavior.

"Kya likha hay paro!" [Read loudly what is written...] Jalal cooled them down with the next sentence.

"Hum pare??"[I will read?] Sareef could not believe his ears...

"Haa, tum par nehi sakte kya? " [Yes, why? Can't you read?]

Sareef thought a while before reading... No he should not read incorrect things. What will happen if the emperor crosschecks? He took the paper in hand and read...

"Farshi harfo me kuch ungli likha hua hay Shahenshah..."[Some digits are written in Farshi language..] he answered. And to show that he is innocent about this he added... "Kya hay yeh? Kisi bacche ki likha hua hay kya?" [What is this? Is this written by any kid?]

Jalal was noticing each and every move in Sareef-Uddin's gesture keenly. He said. "Thik hay...Kya likha hay o to paro..."[Well. Read what is written...]

"Ji Shahenshah!" Sareef nodded like an obedient servant. "Pahele kataar me likha hua hay- satra(17), chhe(6), ikkawann(51)...Uski baad likha hay- gayhara(11), pacchhis(25), chesho-do(602)..." [Yes your majesty. In the first line there is written- 17 6 51... then 11, 25, 602...]

Jalal attentively listened to all the lines Sareef had pronounced. His eyelid did not move from the face of Sareef, who was wiping his sweat most often while reciting the digits... Todarmal and Mahesh were looking at his majesty's face without any clue.

"Bass itna hi hay?" [Only this?]Jalal snatched the piece of paper at once he completed leaving Sareef with a confused look. He again scrutinized the paper very carefully- placing it in direct sunlight, placing it in shadow and many other ways. Then he smiled at Sareef-Uddin...

"Lagta hay tum thik the...Yeh kisi bacche ne khel khel me likha hoga."[I think you are right. Any kid has written this playfully.] He told. Sareef-Uddin tried to give a pleased smile but could not. The relief of becoming out of suspicion and the tension about getting back the message had been mingled in the expression on his face making his face like an unhappy owl!

"To fir shahenshah?" [Then my lord?]Sareef told holding his gasp.

"Tum jao...Aanguthi dhundo..." [You go and search the ring...] Jalal smirked. "Hum dekhte hay kya kiya ja sakta hay...Bharat..."[I am taking care of it...Bharat...]

Bharat was playing at near. He ran to him. Jalal bent on knees to come to his height and gave the paper to him. "Yeh lo mere nanhe sipahi..." [Take it my little soldier...] he affectionately patted him on his shoulder and gave the paper to him! "Aab dhundo khajana..."[Now search for the treasure...] he whispered to him.

Hence Sareef had to see silently how the key of their most important plans are handed over to a 9 years kid!

"Sareef-Uddin?" Jalal called. "Aanguthi mil gayi?" [Sarifuddin? Have you found the ring?]

"Ji nnehi dhund rahe hay Shahenshah!"[No I am searching!] Sareef acted to search something in the grass. No, he has still a lot of chances to regain the message sent by Abul Mali. He is lucky that Jalal digested the fact that this paper is a play-thing of a kid and rather than doing further investigation, he thought to ignore the matter... Now it is not very tough to get back a little piece of paper from a little child. Anyone will do that!

Jalal again had started to walk along with Todarmal and Mahesh Das...He was now calculating something in his mind...After a while Mahesh Das uttered something. "Shahenshah yeh baat to tyar hay ki us patra me gupt sanket se kuch sandesh aa raha tha..."[Your majesty it is confirmed that some coded message was coming through that paper...]

"Yaakinan!" Jalal smiled. [Without any doubt!]

"Fir to hume uss paigaam ki sanket ko vedne ki chesta karna chahiye tha..."[Then we should had to try to decode that!] Mahesh Das said excitedly.

"Karenge na..." Jalal briefly said. "Par paigaam ki sath sath paigaam lenewale ka pata hona bhi to zaruri hay...Uski hi taiyari ki humne..."[We will do that. But with the message we have to know about the receiver too. I only made an arrangement about that...]

"Parantu Shahenshah, kaise?" Todarmal exclaimed. [But how majesty?]

"Dhiraj rakhiye..."Jalal reciprocated with his famous smirk. "Aaj raat ki andar ek bohot bara tamasha dekhne ko milega."He smiled. "Bohot din ho gaya hay koi tamasha dekhe hue..." [Keep patience... We will get to see a great drama tonight. It has been long since I have seen any drama...]

"Samjha Shahenshah!" Mahesh Das smiled back. "Par agar doshi sanket dusri haat me chale jane ki baat likhke or ek sandesh vej de or o log chal badal de to?" [I got it now! But what if the convict informs about this mishandling of the message via any other letter and they change the game? ]

"Nehi karega..."[He will not...] Jalal smiled again. "Jo kabutaar mar gaya hay usse khas taur se Kabul se Amer taq paigaam pauchane ki talim diya gaya tha...Ekdin me nehi hota hay yeh or bohot sare kabutaar ko yeh taalim nehi diya jata...Or to or..."[The pigeon that has died was specially trained for the purpose of sending message from Kabul to Amer. This cannot be done in one day and many pigeons are not trained for this.] he looked to Mahesh's face. "Gunehgaar ki man me ek asha ki diya jala dia hay humne...O yeh aankhri kosish karne se pahele koi paigaam vejne ki bare me sochega bhi nehi!"[And I have lit a light of hope in the mind of the criminal...He will not think to send another message before trying to fetch this one.]

"Par iis sandesh ki sanket ko torne ka karya kaise aarmbh hoga shahenshah!"[But how will we start to decode this message?] Todarmal asked...

"Chaliye hum aapko paigaam me kya tha batate hay..."[Well let me tell you what was written in the message...] Jalal said leaving both of them in confusion.

They were almost near to the palace. Jalal entered into an official conference room and sat down. "Mahesh Das sahab aaj Maan Singh ki shadi ki rasamyon me samil hone se pahele hum sabse kuch baat karna chahte hay..." he said. "Aap zara sabse- sabse matlab Agra ki sare audhedaaro se lekar Amer ki sare ke sare Shahezado taq yeh paigaam pouchaiye ki hum sabse ekele me ekbar roobaroo hona chahenge..."[Mahesh Das Sahab I want to talk with everyone before joining he rituals of Maan Singh's wedding... You please announce to everyone-from the officers of Agra to the princes of Amer, that I want to meet all of them individually.]

Mahesh Das nodded and bowed down before leaving the room. Jalal looked at Todarmal and signed him to take a paper and a pen...

"Likhiye..." he said. While browsing his photographic memory very swiftly he went on... "Satra...che...ikkwannn"... [Write... 17, 6, 51...]

IN FRONT OF THE IDOL OF GOD ...

As per the rituals followed by a royal Rajput family, a grihasanti puja' had been arranged before Maan Singh's marriage to wipe out all the shadow of bad omen from the family. All the women were preparing for the puja, and the havan' was going to be started after a moment. Jodha was sitting before the big Idol of Shree Krishna, the one that had been founded in the temple inside fort, mechanically making garland with flowers...

"Jodha..." her grandmother sat beside her. "Ek bhajan gaa na...Kitni varsh bit gayi iss mandir me teri mithi swar se bhajan sunai dete hue... " [Jodha... Sing one song... It has been years since we have heard your beautiful voice in this temple. ]

"Nehi Daadisa..." Jodha hesitated while refusing. "Hum aajkaal gaate nehi hay..."[No Daadisa... Nowadays I do not sing...]

"Gaati nehi hay to kya hua?" her mother told. "Aaj gaa na!" [So what? Sing today! ]

"Haa Jiji gaiye na...Bohot din aapki gana nehi suni..." all her sisters pleaded. [Please Jiji sing...We have not heard your songs for a long time!]

Jodha looked at the eyes of the idol. Before marriage there was not a single day she had not sung a bhajan before Him... There was not a single day she took a drop of water before worshipping Him. And what did she get? Her eyes became firm...

"Hum nehi gaayenge..." [I will not sing...]

"Sab itni baar kahe rahi hay," Mainabati touched her head. "Gaao na...Sab aapne hi to hay yeaha..." [All wants you to sing, then sing please... All are our own here...]

"Humne kaha na hum nehi gaayenge!!"[Have not I told that I will not sing!!] Jodha lashed out a disgusted voice. All, including the maids and the even the priests present there were stunned to see Jodha's unreasonable anger. No one can imagine that a girl like Jodha will react this way against a simple request from elders.

Jodha herself was feeling ashamed for reacting this way. She lowered her eyes and said in a low, ashamed tone. "Maaf kar dijie Maasa...Hume or gaana gane ki man nehi karta hay!" [I am sorry mother... I do not like to sing nowadays!]

"Maat gaa!"[Don't sing then!!] MainaBati left her side with an angry tone. Jodha felt very guilty seeing her mother getting offened. Sukanya came to her and whispered. "Gaa lo Jodha jiji, nehi to maasa ki gussa sab pe vari pare ga."[Sing Jodha Jiji, else mother's hot mood will tell upon all of us!]

"Nehi gaa sakte hay hum!" Jodha's voice was adamant. "Kyu zor jar rahi hay meri upar?" [I cannot sing! Why all are forcing me?]

"Maasa ko gussa aapne dilayi hay, aap ko hi shant karni hogi baas..."[You have made her angry, you have to cool her that's all...]

"Thik hay!" [Ok!] Jodha at last gave in! She does not want to create a scene. She started...

"Hori na khelo mujhe giridhari...

Maito rang bhari hu...rang bhari..."

Maybe her voice was cracking at high scale, maybe the detachment from singing for a long time was clearly visible in her voice; but the ardour of the skilled beautiful voice of Jodha started to flow like a divine aura, like a seraphic gleam, like a pure drizzle of peace...All the agony hidden in Jodha's heart, all the tears started to come out in the form of the soul-stirring euphony... "Main to rang bhari hu...rang bhari"...

Jalal could not walk more...He stood like a statue in the middle of the path while entering in the temple, lost and speechless, completely forgetting the presence of his father and brother-in-laws! The tune, the voice is so known, so close, so own! His heart started weeping in the rhythm of the melancholy of the tune that was flowing in the air from inside the temple... He could not move forward, he closed his eyes to sooth the uncanny feelings he was experiencing in his heart.

King Bharmal and others got quite shocked to see this sudden change in Shahenshah's gesture. He was perfectly in the mood from morning, as if he has been freed from a hidden tension acting in his mind. After the walk in garden he had talked with each and every male individually regarding some secret matter, had discussed about the present state of politics with the closer advisory circle of the emperor before he could come to attend the function of the wedding. Not only that, even before sometime he was seen to chat with Bharat Singh, the 9 years old son of Khanjar Singh with a gleeful mind. Now what happened?

"Shahenshah!" Bharmal came by his side and asked gently. "Andar chale?" [Majesty, let us enter?]

"Rajasahab!" Jalal faced to him, with a strange unknown expression in his eyes and emotional voice he expressed- "Jodha gaa rahi hay!" [Rajasahab! Jodha is singing!]

Now what is so uncanny about it? Whole Rajputana knows that Jodha is an excellent singer, is it very strange for her to sing a song in a family function? The other people following them were confused to see his majesty's behavior... Bharmal sighed. He knows Jalal from a long time; he can clearly detect the change in the personality of this youth. He can feel that the valiant, fearless, generous personality has been buried under a heap of an unsaid despair. He did not reply, but put his hand on his son-in-law's shoulder after hesitating a bit. "Chaliye Shahenshah!"[Let us go Shahenshah!]

Perhaps this touch helped Jalal to come back. "Haa haa...Chaliye!" Jalal hurried to hide his inner storm from everyone...[Yes yes...Let us go!!]

They entered in. Jalal's eyes met Jodha... She had been sitting in front of the idol, unmindfully singing- pouring all the pain of heart in the tune. Her semi-wet open hairs were kissing the golden jhumkas' of her ears from under the restriction of veil, her lowered eyes was shivering with the flame of the light in front of eyes...The smoke of aromatic joss sticks and candles had surrounded her with a ethereal environment... She was sitting vacantly, like a gloomy idol of a nun- sepulchral yet sacred.

Stopping her song after noticing the presence of the male members of the family, Jodha turned back while pulling down her veil a little over her head. Her eyes directly met Jalal's... Jalal was looking at her with the same mesmerized eyes... He was unable to see anything surrounding him beyond those big, deep, tearful eyes...

Divine! She is divine! Jalal's mind kept on repeating... O God, maybe you can snatch everything from this woman- but you cannot snatch her divinity from her. The same beautiful eyes, sparkling the holiness and purity, which once had become successful to win over the heart of a tyrant, heartless warrior's heart, to capture his heart forever in the prison of her heart, have not changed a bit!

Jalal's mesmerized gaze to his wife's eyes among a room full of others was looking very much odd. All the younger ones were giggling and the elders were trying to hide their smiles... Jodha was too feeling uncomfortable, but she could not deny that she was too unable to move her eyes from those deep black mesmerized eyes, and was enjoying the gaze of her husband from her heart. No matter how far they have been, their souls are connected with an invisible thread- the thread of compassion and devotion.

"Jijasa..." at last Sukanya called out controlling her giggle. "Or kitne din aapni purani patni ki aankhyon ko niharte rahenge?"[Jijasa... How long you will stare at your same old wife's eyes?] Jalal got back to his senses and smiled silly... He could have answered her back in past but now he could not. He just passed a shy smile and walked forward.

For how many times you will fall for the same woman Jalal?

The worship was going to be started. As per the ritual, 5 couples have to perform the havan along with the groom's parents to take the blessings from the God for the happy life of to-be-couples... Dadisa looked at Jodha...

"Chalo Jodha, tum or Jamaisa bidhi ke liye prastut ho jao..."[Come on Jodha, be ready for the rituals. ]

"Hum puja me nehi byathenge!" [I will not sit for worshipping.] Jodha's firm adamant voice again made everyone stunned.

"Kya?"[What?] Mainabati, with a confused expression, looked at Jalal...

Jalal did not know what to answer. He looked at Jodha only. Jodha's eyes were lowered, half covered with the veil, but her standing gesture was proving the rigidity of her words.

"Humari man nehi hay puja me byathne ki... kisi or ke haato se bidhiya sampan kar dijie dadisa..." she said. "Humse bare bohot log hay yeaha jinhe iis puja me byathne ka adhikaar hay." [I do not wish to sit for worshipping...Let some other to complete the rituals... There are many elders here who have right to sit instead of me.]

Good logical solution, but then how the plan of Dadisa and all, to do a havan from the hands of Jodha to eliminate the evil shadows of omen from her head, will be fulfilled? So she helplessly held Jodha's hand...

"Kyu mhari lado...Kya ho kya gya hay thareko? Bhajan nehi gaana chati thi thik hay, par puja me byathne me aapatti..."[Why my daughter... What has happened with you? You were not willing to sing okay, but how can you refuse to worship?]

"Aaplogo ki man rakhne ke liye gaayi na?" Jodha told. "Aab aaplog humari yeh baat man lijie..." [I had sung for you, and so please now listen to my words.]

"Shahenshah! Jodha ko jara samjhaiye na..."[Please make Jodha understood Shahenshah!] Mainabati found the last weapon to defeat her daughter. Jalal helplessly smiled to her. "Agar Jodha Begam puja me byathna nehi chahti hay to kisi or se rasam pura kar lijie. Hume bhi koi dilchasti nehi hay puja me!"[If Jodha does not want to sit then let the rituals be done from any other hand... I too have no interest to sit for worshipping!] The last sentence he uttered was too low and full of disgust!

Mainabati became even more confused and looked at her husband. And failing to seek any solution there she cannot help her from asking... "Parantu Shahensah aap to Jodha ki mahel ki pujayon me vaag lete hay, or Sukanya ki bibah ki bidhiyon me bhi sammilit hue the...Aapke dharm agar..."[But Shahenshah you do perform all the rituals of worship taken place at Jodha's palace, and you too had participated at the customs of Sukanya's marriage...If your religion does not...]

Jodha looked at her with an angry look. "Hum aapni iccha ki baat kar rahe hay... isse Sahenshah ka koi sampark nehi!" [I am talking about my wish! No relation with Shahenshah...]

"Rani Sahiba..." Jalal readily tried to manage the situation. He understood that this small topic is going to be converted in an unwanted controversy regarding his religious vision in everyone's mind. "Humare liye mandir ki ghanti or maszid ki azan me koi farq nehi hay! Hum byathenge puja me..." [Rani Sahiba... The sound of the bell of temples and the azaan of mosque are same for me! I will sit...]

"Hum nehi byathenge..."[I will not...] Jodha firmly pronounced setting her eyes straightly on Jalal. "Hume kisike samne kuch praman karne ke liye aapni man ki biruddh jane ke liye bibash nehi hay!"[I do not need to go against my heart to prove anything in front of anyone!]

"Jodha Begam..." Jalal came towards her and pulled her hand to take her in a less crowded place... With a measured low voice he said. "Man jaiye puja me byathne ke liye... Nehi to baat bigar ja raha hay. Ek patthar ki murat ke samne sar jhukane se bohot bara baadlao nehi ayega humare zindegi me..."[Jodha begam... Please accept to sit else the things will become complicated. Nothing will be changes in our life if we bow down in front of an idol of stone...]

"Kyu jhukaye hum unki samne aapni sirsh jiski paas humari zindegi ki kuch samanya sukhyon ka rakshan karne ki bhi samarthya nehi hay?"[Why should I bow down in front of Him who is not even able to secure some little happiness of my life?] Jodha did not bother to lower her voice to keep her words in secret. So all presented in the hall heard everything. "Khshma kijie hume! Hum yeh dikhawa, yeh dhong nehi kar payenge!" She completed.[Forgive me! I will not be able to show off this hypocrisy!]

"Jodha Begam!" Jalal uttered, but he had no strong point to cut her wife's logic. He helplessly tried to make her understand... "Kabhi kabar hume chaaro taraf ki halato ko dimag me rakhte hue aapne dil ke khilf jana parta hay!"[Jodha Begam! Sometimes we have to compromise with heart thinking about the situations surrounded by us!]

"Aap shahenshah hay! Aapki upar pratibandhakta hay, aap aapni marzi ke malik nehi hay... Aapne pahele aapko aapni chaaro taraf ki paristitiyo ke bare me sochna parta hay!" [You are the emperor. You have restrictions on you, but I am the owner of my mood... You have to think about the situations surrounded by you before thinking about yourself!]Jodha said with a strange rigidity in her voice. "Parantu hum aapni marzi ki maalik hay! Hum kiske samne aapni sar jhukayenge woh hum tyaar karenge. Paristiti nehi!" [But I am the owner of myself! To whom I will bow down will only be decided by me. Not the situations!]

Jalal was speechless. He was again lost in her eyes. As if she is only one pure soul in this hypocrite world...who will not compromise with her belief under any circumstance...She can punish her own God from her heart by not bending her head in front of Him! Not like poor Jalal, who, despite of all his contempt, has to keep fast on Ramzan, go for praying in front of his subjects to keep his image intact in front of them! Jalal felt like no one is as helpless as him. He even cannot reflect his grudge from his heart!!

Perhaps Jodha had read his mind. She smiled cruelly. "Patthar ki murat bolke ura denese aapni dil ke awaj chupaya nehi jata hay Shahenshah! Ascharya hota hay yeh dekhke ki jo manusya raatridin aapne hriday me Usse larte rahete hay, Uski astitwa ko aswikar karne ke liye yudhh karte hay, unhe sabke samne aapni patni se Usske samne sar jhukane ki nibedan karna hota hay! "[The sound of own heart cannot be hidden by declaring Him as an idol of stone! Strange thing is, the same man who uses to fight with Him day and night, battles hard to deny His entity; has to request his wife in front of others to bend down in front of Him! ]

"Hum jante hay ki aap samajhte hay humari majboori..." [You know my helplessness!]Jalal told in anguish. "Hum shahenshah hote hue majboor hay, aap majboor nehi! Hume aapne dil ki khilaaf jana parta hay. Aap aapni dil ki bagyar kisika sunne ke liye majboor nehi hay! Par..."[I am helpless being an emperor, you are not! I have to go against my heart, you are not obliged to listen anyone else than your heart! But...] he took her hand in his hand to request. "Humari begam hay aap...Kya mere majboori ka thorasa hissa hum aapse baant nehi sakte?" [You are my wife... Cannot I share a little of my helplessness with you?]

We were supposed to share everything we have Shahenshah! Our smiles, our tears, our happiness, our grief...everything! But are we successful? Jodha thought...But she did not utter a word. Sighing, she freed her hands and nodded in positive response...

Even sharing helplessness is not a simple thing Jodha!

All the couples sat in front of fire to offer their devotion to the ultimate. Jodha and Jalal sat together, they were too completing all the rituals holding their hands together, but both were out of their minds. Jodha was starring at the eyes of the idol without a blink. All the recitations of the mantras were going over her head. Are you really there my God? Her heart screamed out through her tearful eyes. I don't know if you really exist in the soul of an idol or not; but from my conventional belief I always worshipped you in that, in my worship I have felt you; I have believed that you are there to secure me from all the adversities. But in spite of that all my belongings, my reason of existence has been worn out... Why? Do not these bhajan, mantra come to you? Do not you hear the cry of heart of a devotee? Are you deaf? Or simply you are not anywhere? If so, then why these show-off of worshipping you? Why should I bend in front of Him who cannot even hear me?

Jalal was starring at the flame of the fire with vacant eyes. As if he was trying to connect himself with The Ultimate through that...You are nowhere God, you are nowhere. Not in this idol, not in that flame of the fire, not even in my heart. He tried hard to believe, but as usual, while trying again to deny His existence, his heart was pierced with a sheer ache of a strange mixture of grudge, agony and pain... Jodha was right; it is not so easy to deny the deep-rooted belief and devotion from the deep of heart only by claiming it as an idol of stone- by claiming that he is nowhere!

The rituals of havan being completed, all the couples bent their heads to take the blessings. The priest sprinkled holy water over Jalal and Jodha's head and uttered... "Saari kali saya aap dono ki jivan se hat jaye...Aap dono sukhi bane."[May all the black shadow wipes out from your life... may you become happy.] He touched Jodha's head to bless her. "Jasaswi putro ki mata banengi aap...Bohot bare raja banenge aapki putra."[You will give birth to great sons...Your son will become great.]

A drop of tear rolled down from Jodha's eyes. Even without knowing herself, she clutched the hand of Jalal, which eventually was in her hand at the time of havan. Jalal felt the touch. He looked at her. A clip of memory shinned in his mind.

It was just after one year of their marriage. Jalal had accompanied Jodha to the temple for a ritual of worship. Both of them were at the seventh heaven in happiness of finding true love in themselves recently... Jalal never used to leave a single chance of doing romance with his new-found sweetheart, and that day he was very much in romantic mood... While fighting with his secret naughtiness in the temple, Jodha was completing all the rituals with full of attention and passion. After the worship was over, the priest had sprinkled water on Jodha's head and blessed- "Jasaswi putro ke mata banengi aap..."[You will become the mother of great sons...]

Some months after that, he got the news of Jodha being pregnant and after that his babies came into the Earth... So many beautiful memories!

And after that...

Jalal suddenly felt his eyes were inflaming. Maybe for sitting in front of fire for a long time! May be!

Jalal also held Jodha's hand tightly. Both of their hands were now trying to fetch some strength from that strong hold...

PRECAP: Walking through the down memory lane with beloved... They spent a long time laughing together!
