New York: The US Congress has issued a Congressional recognition honouring Indian music maestro M Balamuralikrishna for his stellar contribution to Carnatic music for the past seven decades.

The proclamation, successfully piloted by Texas Congressman Nick Lampson, was presented to the music maestro at a function held here last weekend.

New Jersey State Assembly's resolution paying a tribute to Balamuralikrishna was also read out on the occasion. A concert by the maestro followed the function.

The event commemorated Balamuralikrishna's career spanning 70 years as well as his 77th birthday.

It was organised by Shri Vari Foundation, formed in New York to promote Indian music and dance in the US.

Prakaash M Swami, a journalist who has launched Shri Vari Foundation, described Balamuralikrishna as a living legend.

His rich contribution to Indian classical music includes sustained efforts to resurrect forgotten ragas.

He has over 400 compositions to his credit including varnams, krithis, javalis, devotional songs and thillanas.

He has sung in Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Oriya, Kannada, Malayalam, Sanskrit, Marathi, Hindi and French. He has held concerts across the world and cut scores of albums.

The acclaimed vocalist's duets with North Indian vocalists and instrumentalists such as Bhimsen Joshi, Kishori Amonkar and Hariprasad Chaurasia have forged national integration through music.

He is also an accomplished instrumentalist, playing the violin, veena, ganjira, viola and the mridangam with equal ease.

The MBK Trust founded by him in Chennai is carrying out research on music therapy.

Balamuralikrishna's contribution to Indian music has won him laurels at home and abroad.

He is a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest Indian civilian honour, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, apart from the Sangeetha Kalanidhi award presented by the Madras Music Academy.

France has bestowed on him the title of Chevalier des Arts et Letters (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) in Paris has honoured him with the Gandhi Memorial Medal.

Balamuralikrishna has been conferred honorary doctorates by 10 universities in India. He served as pro-chancellor of a Telugu University in Hyderabad and as first professor of Dr. Radhakrishnan Chair at the Central University, also in Hyderabad.

Chennai-based Balamuralikrishna was born in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh.

Here is small piece of information on the jugalbandhi between two great musicians in the famous Kannada film Sandhya Raaga.

Week of October 10, 2004 - Film Music : Sandhya Raaga

Remember the Soundtrack of the 60s movie "Sandhya Raaga" ? If not, its time to take a hearing ... not for 1 but 2 reasons -- Pt. Bhimsen Joshi & Dr.Balamurali Krishna. Sandhya Raaga -- Based on a novel by A.N. Krishna Rao (Aa.Na.Kru), is even today remembered as one of the best musical ever produced by the Kannada film industry. Just imagine Pt.Bhimsen Joshi and Dr.Balakmurali Krishna singing for Dr.Rajkumar -- If Bhimsen Joshi and Balamurali Krishna provided the background score, Dr. Rajkumar adds the required on-screen emotions -- Magical moments. The Lyrics of Sri Purandara Daasa, G.V.Iyer & R.N.Jayagopal are set to music by Dr. Balamurali Krishna & G.K.Venkatesh.

It was only in the 90's that Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and Dr. Balamurali Krishna came together again for their Jugalbandhi Series, performing live on stage. Who can forget their Jugalbandhi concerts for National Integration relayed live by Doordarshan (yeh ... our good old Doordarshan) ?

Another album we bring you is a recording of live performance of these 2 stalwarts of Indian classical Music at the Royal Festival hall in London on the 15th of October 1994. This concert has Raag Bhairav at its core, Mayamalava Gowla being the equivalent Raaga in Carnatic. Yet another highlight of this album is Pt. Bhimsen Joshi being accompanied on the Mridangam and Dr. Balamurali Krishna on the Tabala. A true Jugalbandhi of not just the Artists but all aspects of the art form. Dr.M Balamuralikrishna: Maestro of Carnatic music

By: Dhanyasree .M

"Music, when it flows from Balamuralikrishna you can realise what the crazy gopies felt in their ecstasy of divine Love. To be born with music in his heart, to hold a recital at his tender age of only eight Deepavalies, to be at once a master in many instruments apart from his unfailing purity of voice, tal and rag: these are indeed preciously rare in one single person unless he is a genius."

Swami Chinmayananda.

Padmabhushan Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna is one of the towering figures in contemporary carnatic music. He has established his rare talent as a composer, poet, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, innovator and musical iconoclast in carnatic music. With his crystal clear enunciation of the lyrics, the floating ever-fresh quality of vocalism, sparkling creativity, voice modulation and unpredictable swara-combination, Balamuralikrishna has mesmerized his audience all over the world.

Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna was born on 6th July 1930 at Sankaraguptam in Andhra Pradesh. His father Mangalampalli Pattabhiramayya was an eminent flutist and his mother Suryakanthamma was a notable veena artist. His parents initially named him as 'Murali Krishna' and later a distinguished Hari Katha performer Musunuri Satyanarayana gave the prefix'Bala' to his name.

The young Bala Muralikrishna never had the luck to learn music from his mother as she had passed away when he was only 15 years old. However when his father taught the other disciples, he started to imbibe the nuances of good music at the age of two. Pattabhiramayya soon entrusted Balamuralikrishna to 'Gayaka Sarvabhauma' Parupalli Ramakrishnayya Pantulu who trained this rare talent to the divine pinnacles of music.Balamuralikrishna, fifth in the line of direct disciples of Saint Tyagaraja gave his first full-fledged performance at the age of eight, during the Sadguru Arandhana Utsava. Balamuralikrishna discontinued his formal education in class 6th due to continuous concerts and dedicated completely to music.

Balamuralikrishna gifted the carnatic music with innovations in Tala Systems. He introduced new principles to Tala systems and credited it with over 300-400 compositions and many ragas. His composition of ragas include Mahati, Sumukham, Trisakthi, Omkari, Rohini, Pratimadhyamavathi, Janasammodini, Manorama, Vallabhi, Lavangi etc. He also composed Mahadevasutham, Sree Sakala Ganadhipa, Gam Gam Ganapathim and the famous thyagaraja Pancharatnamala (Comprsising Endaro mahaanu bhavulu, Sadinchane, Duduku Gala, Jagadaanada Karaka, Kanakan ruchira).

Awards were showered over him for this wonderful talent. 'Gana Sudhakara', 'Gayaka Sikhamani', 'Sur Singar', 'Geeta Kala Bharati', Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, 'Sangeetha Kalanidhi', Padmashri and Padma Vibushan are some of them. He had the rare opportunity to be featured as a soloist with an award winning British Choir, performing the Gitanjali Suite from Rabindranath Tagore's Nobel Prize winning poetry and composed by Dr.Joel.he was chosen as the 'Wisdom man of the year in 1992'. The famous Indian Universities Andhra University, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Sri Venkateswara University and the University of Hyderabad bestowed the PhD, DSc and Dlitt respectively to this rare talent. He is a state musician of the states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Asthana Vidwan of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, Sringeri Peetam and Anjenaya Swami Temple, Nanganallur.

Balamuralikrishna is very versatile and apart from being a vocalist, he plays the kanjira, mrdangam, viola and violin. With an aim to share his talent, he has established 'Academy of Performing Arts and Research' in Switzerland. With an objective to develop culture and art he has established 'MBK Trust', wher he is carrying out an extensive research on music therapy. 'Vipanchee', A dance and music school is a part of this Trust and is run by his managing trustee Kalaimamani Saraswati. Balamuralikrishna's perfect control at all times in all the three octaves and his wonderfully vibrant, widely ranged, magnetic voice will enchant his listeners forever.
