Chapter 3
The Cold Hunter
An unbroken plane of smooth, hard glass,
Rejects my happy, sentimental thoughts as I gaze at it,
Gathering my indiscretions and drowning me in a pool of them
My self-image of an exuberant, polite young man is shattered,
Destroyed by reality rearing its ugly head,
And secreting a potent toxin into my heart
Seduced by an alluring view of a periwinkle sky,
I glanced toward the colorless pane,
Only to realize a new species of pain
That which I thought was charm,
Is wicked, malicious sarcasm,
Aimed to impale one's heart on a barbed spear
That which I thought was intelligence,
Is cruel, violent cunning,
Designed to beguile others into devious traps
Such a gullible fool I was!
Such a brilliant deceiver I was!
Such a worthless monster I have become
From the approaching shadow~ I could tell someone or something was stalking me~ Who knew love could be such a creeper?~
Jarod Kintz
He was stalking her. Mainly he left those sort of things to his right henchman Shyam but this was a special case. Shyam felt bewildered too. Never in his life the boss had called him in the middle of stalking someone to take back his duty. That strange order was making him jittery with nerves and fear. He was worried that he had somehow displeased the boss...
He was really astonished when Arnav gave him a totally different duty to do and himself went on the stalking spree after getting information from him about the whereabouts of the girl. It seemed totally out of Arnav's character to stalk someone and that too a girl as Shyam knew that Arnav hadn't ever needed to stalk any woman in his life.
Some women in the gang used to have cat fight on almost a daily basis with the exception throwing themselves over him. But he had never seen Arnav being amused by that or being taken in by the siren's call.
Infact he didn't remember Arnav ever being amused or showing any type of emotion at all. The man was a machine. Emotionless, cold and utterly ruthless. His sex partners were chosen specifically by him and were famous for their discretion. But not one of them had gotten any closer to make a nick in the frozen hardness of his heart.
Even when he would be angry instead of raging and ranting he would grow so calm that only the people who were closer to him could understand that his calm would be the warning before the storm. There were certain myths about him in other gangs that he was in reality a vampire who survived by feeding on other people's blood. Specially his enemy's. But his friends knew that
Arnav wasn't the one to show his feelings to anyone at any time and in any place, not even to them. What he truly felt in his frozen heart remained a mystery to them. That's why he had gotten the title of the Cold One.
Arnav himself didn't knew why he was stalking her and that too in broad daylight. It was on a spur of the moment thought or maybe it was curiosity to have a better look at the girl who would be the most important device in his mission in future. They say look that a woman look at her most natural while she is with her friends on an outing. Her true nature can be known easily through her talks and her gestures.
So as per that saying right now he was in a shopping mall where she was wandering inside shops, looking at various assortments of perfumes and accessories, spending so much on unnecessary items that even he felt piqued at her being a shopaholic...
Then he held himself in check. Arnav what are you doing, you don't get to feel anything be it wrong or right?
To his growing vexation he found out another thing about her, that she was clumsy as hell too. As he himself had witnessed her dropping many pieces of precious antiques and then scrambling around on hands and feet to gather them all the while chattering excitedly with her friends and bumping into a chair or a table along her way. His lips started to curl in displeasure than he stopped himself right in his tracks.
What was the matter with him? Why was he feeling displeasure and that too for a strange girl for whom he shouldn't be having any real feelings at all lest of displeasure, he mentally checked himself again. Shaking his head he switched back his gaze on Khushi.
She was with a group of five girls. And probably the prettiest of them but in a school girlish way. He found that there was nothing unusual about her other than her hazel eyes which sparkled whenever she laughed. She had a large boisterous laugh which to him wasn't attractive and girlish at all. Whenever she had a fit of giggles she threw her head back so that the mane of her long dark brown hair rippled at her back and would open her mouth to let out a gusty laugh...
It was irritating him to hell. He cursed the time when he had gotten curious to come stalking her...
The group was walking around, going from shop to shop for many hours. Arnav had tried to be his most discreet, getting in the shadows whenever Khushi turned casually to look at her surroundings and when she would turn her face away he would turn right back to his original position and would observe her through the corner of his eye. But Shyam was right this stalking thing wasn't made for a tall person like him, who could be easily spotted in the crowd because of his tall stature.
The target of his displeasure was now moving out of the mall with other girls. So he stalked after them with long strides keeping a discreet length of space between them. He noticed that she was holding something in the palm of her hand which she was hiding behind her back totally unaware of the hawk-like keen and observing eyes boring in the small of her back. Years of living the life of a gangster had made him watchful, and wary of the surrounding people's motive. He was always mistrustful, although a bad habit itself his mistrustful nature had greatly worked out for him.
It had made him his gang's boss...
He was able to notice many unobtrusive things that other normal people might never get to notice in their life. He discovered to his chagrin that the item which she was hiding in her fist was an antique piece, picked from the antique shop. But if she had bought that item then she had no need to hide it. Frowning he saw her turning her to an fro, sharply looking for any discreet observer. She totally missed him as he ducked behind a stone pillar...
Satisfied that no one was watching her she put out her fist and dropped the antique piece in her hand bag. It came in a flashing moment to him that what he had known to be her shopaholic ways were actually her stealing ways. It was her trick of creating a ruckus by pushing the things to fall around her, then engaging people in a chat she would stumble, bump into something injure herself, shift their attention on her injury and then here would come the time to strike...
And she would chose an assortment of her choice and slip it discreetly into her hand bag.
It is a person's nature to stare at the face of the person next to them, with whom they are communicating. And Khushi was taking benefit of the same nature to steal.
"A thief", he whistled under his breath...
The group hooted with glee and he came out of his deep assessing thoughts. It seemed she was showing them the ill-gotten gains. So they were all involved in shop lifting. But Khushi being the daring one would be the one stealing and the group would create ruckus to divert the shopkeepers attention towards their fuss. And they were so good at it that they would be hardly observed by anyone...
The girls were also very careful of not picking anything with a barcode and the little items that they had helped Khushi steal were stolen after spotting a blind spot which couldn't be spotted through a camera's lens and they would also shield Khushi from any worker or staff's view while she was on the ground...
The stolen thing would be handed by Khushi to the nearest girl and it would go on shifting from hand to hand until it would come back in Khushi's hand again after they would have arrived safely and out of reach of any shopkeeper's eyes...
Khushi was not only good at taking risk, she was daring to the point of recklessness too, even injuring herself for the sake of some petty items. She was also a good actress, from not one shift of her facial expression had she let him or anyone known that she was out for stealing. Not even an experienced criminal like him could spot her...
"So not an innocent one to be destroyed" his lips curled derisively at seeing her flicking back her hair in a victorious manner and shaking his head scornfully he stalked after the group which was at the moment heading towards a nearby restaurant...
Khushi had no idea whatsoever that she had made it more easier for him to get the cogs in the wheel working for his mission...
Restaurant
The restaurant's interior was very spacious and the lights were dimmed to give an atmosphere of fake coziness, specially for couples. The girls found an empty table in the farthest corner of the restaurant and sat there, still chattering and whispering in excitement, disturbing the peaceful atmosphere of the restaurant.
Men had started staring at them with avid interest. Women were looking at them with mixed emotions. The fat and old ones with envy and the young ones with displeasure evident on their faces cause they were disturbing their chat with their boyfriends and husbands. A young waiter made a beeline for them, with a wide smile fixed on his face. The girls started flirting and teasing him, making him shift uncomfortably on his feet.
After some time when they grew bored with their prey they left him to his own. The young waiter move hurriedly away out of their attack zone, his face red with embarrassment, wide smile turned into a sheepish one and their order clutched in a sweaty hand...
Arnav had already sat at a near distance from their table. He had his tab in his hands as a camouflage and was observing their antics through the corner of his eyes...
After sometime he noticed that they had stopped talking boisterously and were now whispering instead. Through the corner of his eye he spotted one of them pointing towards him. he felt the stomach drop out of him, had they seen him stalking them. Clenching his jaw he went back on playing the game. A hush had fallen over the group.
After a moment's hesitation his intended target got up from the chair and begun to sashay towards him on stiletto heels with a pinned siren's smile on her face that looked so fake to get on that he couldn't help but bite his lower lip to hide the wide smirk from spreading to his face. Not daring to look up as she moved nearer lest for the risk of her spotting him looking at her through stealthy eyes he moved his fingers more exuberantly on the screen of his tab.
At reaching his table she stopped, placing a hand on her right hip which she stuck out in an exaggerated pose. He ignored her purposely, not lifting his head to acknowledge her presence. For a couple of seconds she waited impatiently for him to look up at her but when he still paid her no attention, she cleared her throat. Irritated at her determination of being acknowledged he lifted his head to stare at her with an irritated expression clearly showing for her benefit.
Her smile vanished for a second but it looked as if nothing could deter her going after what she wanted. Headstrong and selfish too, he mentally added another note to her already growing list of sins in his eyes. After a few seconds she pinned her flirty smile back on her face and huskily asked permission from him to sit at his table.
In response he gave her a chilled stare and refused her in a cold voice that matched his frosty expressions. He told her clearly that he was already waiting for his partner and that she had no reason to sit there. There were many empty tables left and she could chose any of them to sit at.
He could judge from her expressions that she was quite taken aback by his unexpected rudeness. The teasing light in her eyes dying to be replaced by mixed emotions of hurt and anger. Clearly it looked that the men in her life were all foolish, sickly sweet and wet behind the years boys with whom she could play to her heart's content and who would never refuse her on anything and it would be quite unusual for her being rejected by a man, he thought with sardonic amusement...
But she was sure something as he found out to his amusement in the next moment. As quickly as the expressions of hurt and anger had flitted across her face they vanished with the same speed too. Composing herself, she moved her chin a little higher and dragging the chair on it's hind legs she brazenly sat on it in a flash.
Now why didn't that brazen manner surprised him. He knew to what extent women could go in order to gain attention from him. Ignoring her royally he shifted his attention back to his tab's glowing screen again.
After some minutes of wait she stuck out her hand beneath his nose. "Hi, I am khushi what's your name?" , she asked in a high-pitched girlish voice.
She was sure a stubborn one. Why was she doing this after his arrogant rejection, he was beginning to get confused himself, maybe she was a masochist. Frowning he raised his gaze to the face bent towards him. For the first time he was looking at her directly into the face and it caught his notice that she had quite a delicate nose and luscious ruby lips on which teasing smile was stuck like a glue.
He could detect a hint of chocolate remains of a pastry in the right corner of her lips which she must have been eating a while ago and a sudden thought came into his mind about strawberries and chocolates.
Her wide spaced hazel eyes were staring unblinkingly at him in a confident manner as they knew their mesmerising effect on the other person. Staring transfixedly in her hazel orbs he made to lift his hand but then stopped himself in mid air, concealing the vulnerable gesture by waving the hand in an irritated manner. Why was he thinking about her lips? He jerked his head in irritably. Maybe he had gone celibate for too long. Certainly frustrated desire is casting such hallucinations in my mind" , he muttered to himself.
"Did you say something to me?" asked Khushi. A questioning look in her eyes. Exasperated with her vexing mannerisms and his own astounding reaction towards her his patience gave way. And Arnav Singh Raizada who had never raised his voice beyond a chilling whisper, who was labelled as cold and calculating one and who had never once lost his head on anything in his life snapped like an overstretched elastic.
"Why are you pursuing me? You should pursue someone of your own age child. Gals of your age shouldn't come on to men of my age. Your plan can backfire you know. Go on child! Scamper away! And the next time try those dirty tricks on some young buck!" angrily he waved his hand as if he was dismissing a particularly naive child.
In his ranting he never noticed that the girl in front of him had gone deathly still. Putting the bill on the table he started to get up from the chair. He never in his life would have predicted the attack that came on his way without any definite warning...
Her hand seemed to move in a slow motion and he felt a sudden burning sensation on his face and then something viscous rolled down the front of his shirt and inside of it. The pain was so acute that all his muscles froze up. Instinctively he moved his hand to his face to shield himself against more pain. Through a haze of pulsing pain he blinked back the burning liquid from his tearing eyes too look at the halo of the girl standing infront of him.
As he wiped his hands across his painfully burning eyes, the girll's face came into focus. She was livid with rage and her eyes were shooting red sparks at him. In her hand was the empty mug which had been lying on his table just a minute ago...
She had thrown the Hot Coffee... right in his face ...which he was leaving untouched in a hurry to get away from her...
