ZNMD. I think its Zoya's best. I watched it the other day gain and noticed a lot of things that didn't come to me when I watched it before. DDD while being a fun watch comes nowhere close. Here's why ZNMD is better;
a- The direction and the editing is much tighter. Zoya comes into her own as a director in ZNMD. You can see patches of this in DDD also but that just it, patches.
b- The performances are much better. Farhan and Naseer were par excellence; Kalki-Abhay were good too and Hrithik was decent. Katrina was supposed to look and talk like that so for once it wasn't a bore either.
c- Farhan Akhtar as Imran. He was bloody brilliant and was the soul of the movie. DDD doesn't have anything like that. Take this guy out and the movie wont be what it is. That scene where Imran (Farhan) meets his Father (Naseer) is so well written, directed and enacted. Acting masterclass it is.
d- The music. Apart from Gallan DDD's music is mediocre. The BG score was good though. While ZNMD's music is fantastic. Senorita, IK Junoon, Khawboon Ke Parinday etc and the BG music.
e- There is a strong plot and a story, which hold the movie together. The screen play written by Reema and Zoya shines here while in DDD if not for the brillinace of Farhan( Dialogue) then movie would have been a 2 star affair at best. It is that weak and paper thin in DDD.
g- The dialogues by Farhan are quality. He is is top form in both movies. Some absolute gems in there. But ZNMD with its better structured/layered plot and an actual story to tell, allows him more freedom and hence the result is far superior. DDD's dialogues are fab too, they are the only thing that hold the movie together.
f- The poetry by Javed Akhtar. So deep, so powerful. Its beautiful as it is but the way Farhan recites it, the score playing in the BG and the moments it captures make those words even more stunning.
h- The climax. In DDD's case it is a mess. Nothing makes any sense whatsoever.
ZNMD's climax is perfect, it all fits and comes together beautifully. The icing on the cake are Imran's words as they run towards life (literally too in this case😆). Like I said its perfect.
