Chapter 3

"Raman, can you take me home? Amma appa must be worried. I left in a huff last night and never informed them where I was." Ishita told Raman after they had dropped Ruhi to school.

"Ishu, I don't really think that's a good idea at the moment. I think you should come home with me. And before anything else, we need to go to a somewhere." Raman countered. Amma's words from the previous night were still disturbing him. But knowing Ishita's condition, he didn't want to get her any more worried. He knew Amma's thoughts will cause her more agony and he wanted to keep Ishu safe.

"Why Raman? I need to get back home, see Amma. She must be worrying. I need to see her." Ishita repeated. Raman just quietly drove on. "Raman, what's wrong? Why aren't you taking me home? Did something happen?" she kept asking.

"Amma knows you are staying at my place for a few days, Ishu. I spoke to her last night. She's okay with that and she wants the same." Raman said after her repeated questions. "Okay! I'll call her up in that case." Ishita countered.

"Ishu, don't. She's not in the right fra of mind currently. Maybe you should give her some more time." Raman said. Ishita was sure now that there was something wrong. She thought her mother would be waiting for her, maybe with a changed mind. She had hoped for that since last night. However, Raman's words gave her a different picture altogether. Amma did not want to be in contact with her.

Ishita had kind of known this was bound to happen. She had known that her orthodox family wouldn't be the pillar of support she needed at the moment. But she thanked God for Raman. At least she had someone who cared for her without being judgemental. She remembered her decision from the morning, to face the truth and live normally, so that Raman and Ruhi wouldn't be affected.

"Where are we going?" she asked Raman after a while. "To the doctor. You need a check-up. Since you are from the medical field, you know the reasons better." He replied looking straight ahead. "Moreover, in my opinion, that idiot needs to be punished."

No, she didn't want to do this. She didn't want the world to know what she had been through. She had just resolved to be happy and lead a normal life. She knew a case against him would come with a media report, a lot of unwanted publicity and attention and a lot more of agony. She didn't have the strength to fight now. Moreover, she had just lost her family. She didn't want to cause them anymore distress by bringing the focus on them and causing them disrepute. She just wanted to live. She had the right to live peacefully, didn't she?

Her thoughts were broken by the voice of Raman calling out to her. She looked up at him helplessly, almost pleading with her eyes to not make her do this. Raman understood her ordeal and decided to talk her through this. He needed to make sure she was okay. "I'm starving! Can we have coffee? I know a nice place here?" Raman asked her. Relief ran through her as she realised that they were not at the doctors, yet.

Raman led her to a quiet cafe around street and settled in a corner. Ishita dreaded what was in store as Raman ordered coffee for both of them. She didn't want to go through this again. She didn't want to relive the previous night. She felt the pain, shame, depression, anxiety and fear all at the same time. Raman quietly continued watching her as the emotions ran through her face. He knew this was a sensitive subject and he needed to be careful with his words. He wanted to reduce the stress and guilt and not cause her further pain.

As the coffee arrived, Ishita looked up. Raman was lost in thoughts looking at a distance. "Raman!" she called out, "What are you thinking about? You look lost." Raman looked at her and smiled. He sipped on his coffee and put the mug back on the table. He then sat upright on his chair and focussed his attention on Ishita.

"Ishu, remember back in time, you, me and Shagun had gone to this movie, Munnabhai. Such a laughter riot the movie was na! I was just thinking about that day." Raman said. He saw the change in her expression. She now looked more at ease, but then she went blank again. "Why this now?" she thought as she recollected the day. They had decided to make it memorable as that was the last time they could all be together. Ishita was moving out in a couple of days. There were many happy and sad memories attached to that day. That was the last time she had ever seen Shagun.

"We went to the ice cream parlour after the movie, remember? And there were these boys who tried to misbehave with you and Shagun?" he asked slowly trying to read her expression which changed from happy to shocked to scared in an instant. He, however, decided to continue with his talk. "Remember how you stood up against them and got them punished? You need to be that Ishita again, Ishu. You need to stand up for yourself and for all the women who have been wronged. You keeping quiet will only worsen the situation, Ishu. Subbu needs to be punished. I really think so. If you are worried what the society will react like, you really don't have to. You don't need to think about the people who were not there for you when you needed them."

Ishita processed Raman's words and realised what he was saying is right. She needed to raise a voice against the person who wronged her. She needed to remind the society that marriage was not a licence for men to force themselves on their partners. What Subbu had done to her was a crime and he needed to be punished for what he did. Raman waited patiently, waiting for her to react. He wanted her to go against Subbu, but, he didn't want to force her or make her go against her will. He couldn't give up without trying either.

Ishita decided what she wanted to do next. "Raman, let's go to the doc." She declared, determined what she wanted to do. Raman was happy with the result. He was happy to see a glimpse of the old Ishu he knew.

Ishita was a nervous wreck as they sat outside the doctor's cabin, waiting for them to be called in. Raman saw the anxiety and carefully placed his hand over hers. "Ishu, don't worry! Its gonna be alright." He whispered in her ears. Soon enough, they were called in.

"Mr Bhalla, you should have got her here last night itself." The doctor told Raman as Ishita was still in the examination room. "In such cases, the victim needs to be examined immediately to establish a proof. The sooner the examination is done, more effective evidences can be collected. Nevertheless, its not too late now. Good thing you got her now."

"Is she okay doc? Is there a fear of being prone to illness or anything of that sort?" Raman asked, concerned. "I dont think so Mr Bhalla. But, she's been hurt in one of the most intimate ways possible ways and what she needs now is someone to support her. She cant get over this alone. She will look at herself the way her close ones treat her. Hence, Mr Bhalla, you need to be careful with your actions and words. The smallest of actions and one wrong word could trigger extreme reactions because of what she's been through."

Raman nodded in acceptance as Ishita came out. The doctor then spoke to her about the precautions she needed to take and instructed Raman on the medicines. A report was then prepared and handed over to them.

"So, can we go to the police now, Ishu?" Raman asked as they came out of the hospital. Ishita stiffened. Raman realised that she was not beside him. He turned around to see her taking a deep breath. She looked up into his eyes and nodded in positive. Raman now knew she was ready to face the world and he vowed to stand beside her, no matter what.

Done with my part! Your turn now :)

Here are the points for the update!

AS A SURVIVOR

1. If you have been the victim of a rape or sexual assault, you may not know how to feel normal again. You may feel that the emotional pain of a rape or sexual assault will never go away. You may feel shame, depression, anxiety and fear after the attack. No matter how you feel, know that things will become better, you will learn to heal, and life will go on in your new normal.

2. Seek medical attention - even if you do not want to take the assault to the police, you must be seen by a doctor to receive care for any injuries and to be tested (and receive treatment) for any sexually transmitted infections.

AS A LOVED ONE

3. Don't guilt or pressure your friend into reporting the rape - it is up to his or her discretion whether or not he or she wants to report the rape to the police. You can encourage this, but do not use guilt or pressure as a motivator - your friend is already dealing with a lot of guilt and grief about the rape.

4. Be there - Sometimes just being there is enough. Your loved one is likely looking for a safe space to share, not for a fixer or a solution.
