Would South Africa choke
this early? Usually, it's at the Semi Final stages that they choke.
To an extent, I disagree w/ the tag. In 1991, for instance, they lost due to the ridiculous rain rule - 22 from 7 balls becoming 22 from 1 ball. In 1999, it was the Hansie Cronje drop of Steve Waugh, followed by the latter psyching him w/ the comment about costing the cup. In 2003, South Africa was really mediocre throughout the tournament, not just the quarters or semis - that was what caused Shaun Pollock to be fired and the 21 year old Graeme Smith to replace him.
Only time I'd agree they choked was in 1996 in India, when they lost their QF to Windies, when they were one of the better placed teams, aside from the hosts.
Chokers would imply that one gets to near the top, and then falters. South Africa got near it twice, but other times, have been eliminated during the qualifying stages themselves.
Anyway, rooting for South Africa today, since I want a tough battle for NZ in Auckland, which Sri Lanka can't give. I won't be up, since I have to get up early tomorrow - I might get to see the end of this match.
Enjoy!
