I'd guess he feels remorse. I think his constant charity is in part to make up for the fact that he killed a person.That he doesn't admit his guilt and has made the case controversial with threats is a separate issue. I think it is fear of prison, loss of face, ego and other factors trigger this behavior. Psychologically, the crime doesn't exist till you admit to it. It is how kids categorically deny biting, hitting, kicking their friends/siblings even though everyone knows they did it. They know it is wrong. They know they should admit to it and apologize. They know others saw them. You just form this mental perception that denial erases its existence. Of course Salman's case is a much more extreme case with more drastic repercussions than a juvenile fight.
