Dear Friends,
This weeks Retro Cafe is dedicated to a very special theme- "The influence of Urdu on Bollywood music"
Urdu is considered as one of the world's most beautiful languages and righly named the "Kohinoor" of India. It is an Indo-European language which originated in India, most likely in the vicinity of Delhi from where it spread to the rest of the subcontinent. It developed from the interaction between local Indian Sanskrit-derived words and the Persian languages. This process perhaps took place mostly in military camps.Incidentally, the word Urdu means "army" or "horde" in Turkish.
It soon became the language of the Mughals, distinguished linguistically from local languages by its large and extensive Persian-Arabic vocabulary superimposed on a native Hindi base of grammar, usages and vocabulary. It is widely spoken today in both India and Pakistan and all countries having a sizeable South Asian population. Hear the urdu, and a feel of something romantic or exotic flashes up in mind....

Urdu was the premiere language of poetry, ghazals, nazms ,shers and also musical forms such as qawaali. Urdu usage is found widely in our Bollywood films. It finds expression in hindi songs in three distinct ways..
Sometimes classic urdu poetry is used in certain cinematic situations -"babul mora naihar chuuto hi jaaye" is a classic example of that.
Compositions tailormade for filmy situations like having a qawaali scene, sufi songs, mushaira, nazms, ghazals mujra's etc
Snippets or phrases of famous urdu poets find their way into the lyrics of hindi songs-"dil dhoondta phir wohi fursat ke raat din" is a classic example
We have some fabulous such collections in bollywood music - the influence of urdu in them is very evident and they are really like honey to the ears.
So dear friends, get ready for a week of absolute melody and poetry and don't miss this opportunity, it will surely be something to remember.
