I just caught up with this show over the weekend & I felt compelled to make a post. On the surface, this show seems like a fairytale; a pretty face that has nothing more to it. Rich man meets poor woman & happily ever after BUT I have to admit that this show surprised me the most. (I love the other Sony Pal shows too) Its not the most unique concept in the world, but clearly, the execution & the way its written is so different. Each episode that I watched, I realised the CVs took a route other than the cliched.
1. Kabir's mom & aunt came to know immediately that Pia is their maid's daughter. No dragging her. Wow, I was surprised.
2. Pia - she is not your typical goody goody girl. She is a girl who is humble and has pride. Not only does she work hard & accept her mother's job without any complaints, she herself has no qualms in doing it & telling other people that. That is so refreshing. A female lead not looking down on her poverty & having the guts to tell everyone. Again no hiding & everyone knows what she is.
3. Kabir's family - They are rich, they do feel proud about their status. But at the same time, they are humble. It was touching to see them owning up to their mistake when they misunderstood Pia & Kabir's relationship. They apologized, and also looked at her with respect when she came to work. Another refreshing change again.
4. Pia & Kabir's relationship - its difficult to define what their relationship really but all I can say is that its very real. They don't fight excessively but neither are they ultra sweet, unlike most TV couples. They are cordial & so very real. Nothing over the top in their interactions, though I would like that the falling scenes be toned down.
5. The episode when Pia's bag was searched - YES. This is a common scenario that happens in Indian Telly but yet, this sequence was very different. Every show that focuses on a rich man-poor woman love story, I feel, fails to define what really the complication is about such a love story. I always wondered the real issue was. They are both humans & if it is about coming from a different lifestyle, it can be worked on. One can learn to adjust. But the bag search episode defined it & for the first time, made me realise what the issue is. And that is the mentality of people. No matter how much respect people treat Pia with, it can never change the label attached to her that she is poor, and so like Aditi mentioned whenever anything goes wrong, she will always be seen as an easy culprit because her situation is one where most people believe you are always helpless. And that is Pia's struggle - to live life overcoming that mentality of people & telling them that yes she is poor, but she is not helpless. Helpless to the point that she needs to adopt the wrong path to get what she wants. She can have her own identity & a normal life too.
All in all, I like this show so far. The pace is nice & the characters are not too one-sided. No villains so far & they are very real. Let's hope the CVs keep it up.
Wishing Pia/Kabir all the best. Bridging the distance physically might be easy, but mentally, there is a lot they will have to experience & go through before making it as one :)
Sorry for my long rant.
Cheers,
Samridhi
