Although Ganesh Chaturthi is a 11 day festival, people bring home Idols (murtis) of Lord Ganesha and celebrate the festival or a day and a half, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days or 11 days depending on the family tradition and commitment of each individual.
Normally, it is observed the Sarvajanik Pandals perform the visarjan (nimanjan) of Lord Ganesha on 11th day i.e, Anant Chaturdashi Day, however people at home bring small idols of Ganesha and perform the Ganesh Visarjan after a day and a half, 3 days or 5 days.
Ganesh Visarjan, Ganesh Immersion or Ganesh Nimajjanam all mean the same. It is a ritual or process which culminates the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
During this process, the statue of Lord Ganesha is immersed into water body, preferably in a river, lake or the sea. Before that, final offering of coconuts, flowers and sweets are made to the statues of Lord Ganesha and then they are taken to the water body through the street procession with much fanfare.
Thousands of devotees join the procession and fill the whole atmosphere with chanting of "Ganapati Bappa Morya, Pudcha Varshi Lavkar Ya" which means come back soon next year.
