Raman was shocked!
Ishita just blew a flying kiss at him! He stumbled, his hand searching for support.
He saw her grinning wildly after sending his heart racing.. Thankfully he was leaning on the stage for support.
He heard a tiny laugh behind him, only to see Ruhi standing there catching her mother's kiss and returning it.
Oh!.. the kiss was for Ruhi. Not for him. Damn! He was angry!!
No.. He was jealous. Jealous of his own daughter!
Raman Kumar Bhalla, he chided himself, you have completely lost it. Jealous of your own child-how crazy was that.
Ruhi was screaming and jumping.. I won, papa. I won!!
He pulled his thrilled daughter into his arms and turned to see his wife who looked extremely pleased. Eyes slightly moist at her daughter's win.
He knew he will remember this day for ever. It was because of this one indomitable woman standing in front of him. If not for her he would have never known this joy
It was Family Day at Ruhi's school where the families were invited to participate along with their child in various competitions.
When Ishita informed him last week, he was a bit hesitant. He wanted to attend but hesitated as he did not want to disappoint his daughter by losing.
He wanted to be his daughter's hero.
He tried to make excuses of meetings and other engagements but, he now realized, he was married to one smart woman.
She had coordinated with Mihir(whom he had to deal with, for being a traitor) and ensured he was free and had no escape.
All through the week, she had constantly reminded him about the event and even totally ignored him when he tried to bring up the topic.
So he had no choice but to attend. On the evening before the event, she sat next to him and softly said, "I am a bit scared too; of disappointing Ruhi. Its my first time too, as a parent"
He was surprised that she could understand his fear and was glad that this was a special moment for her too. He decided they are going to live this moment together.
That thought cheered him.
On the D-Day they reached the auditorium where the children sang a prayer and then the school song followed with a skit and a dance performance
In the end there was an elocution competition the topic being "My Family". He heard Ruhi speak out the words that Ishita had written for her. Simple but very meaningful.
Something that Ishita truly believed in and followed. The unspoken prayers that his heart always wanted for his family were answered. And his family was more at peace today only because of this one selfless woman in his life.
His eyes locked with Ishita, pride and happiness mingled for their daughter.
For him she was the most beautiful woman on earth, not only as his wife but also as the mother of his child.
Who says biology has anything to do with being a parent, he thought. His daughter was turning out be just like her mother, even in lecturing!
Seeing her jump in her chair when Ruhi finished her recitation, wanted him to just reach over and envelope her in a tight hug for teaching such values to their child.
He broke out of his reverie when Ishita suddenly clasped his hand.
"See Raman, she spoke so well. Surely our daughter will win". Our daughter, our family. It was music to his soul.
The joy on his face pulled at her heartstrings. She would do anything - anything to see him happy
Ruhi won the contest and he ran to the stage capture the prize winning moments of his daughter
He turned back to look at his beautiful wife, and this was when Ishita blew a kiss at him.
Well! what he thought was for him.
He was still trying to conquer this strange jealousy when Ruhi's class teacher came there.
After congratulating them on their daughter's win, she asked them to go to the ground to participate in other events.
There was a race where the father's to run while piggy backing their child. Ishita was concerned. Raman already had a back ache.
Raman enjoyed it and was glad he came second. It gave him confidence. Ishita came running to him.
"Raman, are you ok? Does your back hurt?"
"It does a bit, but then anything for my daughter" he responded with a smile..
They were called for a treasure hunt followed by a lemon and spoon race for the mother's. Ishita came third in that for which he enjoyed pulling her leg imitating her walk.
Then there was the last three-legged race, where one leg of each parent was tied to the other and they had to coordinate their walk and reach their daughter who stood at the finish line.
Ishita felt immediately awkward when she heard this. She saw the feeling mirrored on Raman's face and thought of excusing them out of the event, but seeing Ruhi cheering them, they agreed.
They started on the wrong foot and immediately started pointing each others mistake. Raman said, "Ok, lets do this together, calling one and two."
So they started walking again coordinating with each other. Ishita stumbled and held on to his neck to stall the fall.
His hand went across her waist to hold her. A shiver went down her spine at the sudden contact.
Raman heard Ishita letting out a small gasp when his hand contacted the soft skin of her waist. He looked at her and saw her cheeks going red. He was lost in her. He wanted to slide both his arms around her and familiarize her sweet contours.
The cheering noise brought him out of his day-dream.
He held her firmly at the waist and when she gave him an awkward glance, he told, "Come on.. buck up. I don't want to lose because of you. Couldn't you wear something else other than the sari?", though inwardly he knew no other garment would have been able to give him the small treat he was getting today.
He tightened his hold on her waist while she protested.
"I want to win, for Ruhi" he reasoned seeing her cheeks flush and secretly enjoying it.
They jumped and tumbled in the last step in a bid to overtake the couple who were neck to neck with them.
Ouch! his back hurt. He turned to see Ishita hurt. Worried he checked her hand and saw a few scratches.
"Ishita, I am sorry, Does it hurt very badly?" he asked, concerned.
"No Raman, its ok. Bas scratches hain. Just need to clean it with an antiseptic"
Meanwhile the judges had declared them the winners. Ruhi ran towards them and enveloped them in a hug, jumping and screaming with joy.
Their injuries forgotten, they collected their prizes, took photos, had dinner and headed home listening to their daughter's non-stop chatter.
When they reached home, Ruhi ran inside and immediately started describing the event to the greatest detail to her grandparents
Ishita smiled. She felt proud of her daughter. She went inside her room to take a change of dress. She heard Raman come in and stiffened. she remembered how his hand felt on her waist.
All the way back home she was desperately trying not to think about it but she kept remembering how her heart raced at the touch. She fumbled in the cupboard scared to face him
Raman walked inside and stood by the bed watching her fumbling with her clothes. He knew she was still flustered
"Ruhi kahan hai?" he asked.
"Woh.. mummyji use nahela rahi hai"
"To..hum dono bhi nahaan le?" he asked her, his eyes twinkling mischievously, purposely emphasizing on 'dono'.
"Dono matlab?" she stammered, her face red. Uff! she closed her eyes. Dumb question. She chastised herself for asking
"Matlab dono nahate hain.." he moved towards her. She was cornered. He moved his hand towards her and caught the jasmine flowers that she had pinned on her hair and inhaled the scent
She stood still, hearing the pitter-patter of her heart.
All the cells in her body went on high alert as his mouth slowly came down to her ears and whispered "..alag alag, ofcourse. kyu tumne kya socha?" he asked while picking a towel from his shelf.
"Main kya sochungi, matlab wahi socha jo aapne socha. Matlab..kuch aur kyu sochungi?" she stammered rummaging mindlessly through her clothes
"Accha.. mujhe laga ke tumne socha.. saath saath.. you know"
"Kuch bhi! matlab kuch bhi assume karte ho aap. Mera aisa koi irada nahin hai" she retorted
"Irada nahin par soch to thi na..." he grinned
"Maannana padega Ishita. Main tumhe ek sanskaari picture ka trailer dikha raha hun and tumne use ek adult film bana diya..Che che che..Sudhar jao yaar!"
He winked at her, took his clothes and walked into the bath room
She wanted the ground to open up and swallow her. Oh this is so embarrassing, she thought
Taking her clothes she ran into Ruhi's room. She needed to be alone to bring her heart beat back to a normal pace. This man was driving her crazy. 'Saath-saath..kuch bhi' she thought, her face going red again.
She decided to wait in Ruhi's room till Raman got dressed and left the bedroom
Shortly she heard him going to the hall calling his mother.
Taking her clothes she ran into the bathroom. When she felt she had cooled down a bit, she came out and peeped into their bedroom, checking if Raman was still there.
She saw him standing in his pajama bottoms, his back towards her. Not wanting to take the risk of facing him, she turned to go when she heard a small moan.
She frowned. Raman was trying to apply a balm on his back. Must have hurt his back with all the running around and the fall.
Worried, she closed the door and ran in. "Raman, mujhe dijiye. I'll apply"
"Its ok Ishita, you are tired and you too got hurt today na?, Show me."
"No, I am ok. Zara se scratches hain and I cleansed it with an antispetic. Dont worry about me. Please mujhe balm dijiye na? Aap bed par let jao, main lagati hun"
Raman agreed and lay down on the bed. Ishita sat next to him and pressed her fingers lightly on his shoulder bone."Yahan?"
"Hmmm.. and the middle too" he murmured and closed his eyes. He felt her hands on his back. Slowly rubbing the ointment, lightly massaging his sore muscles.
So relaxing, so soft.. just like the way her waist felt..
His eyes flew open. "Oh God! One track mind ho gaya hai tera Raman Bhalla! He turned to find Ishita concentrating on his back with a small smile on her
face. He thought "Yahan main bechain pada hun aur madam sukoon se ointment laga rahi hai!. Aise nahin chodunga ise..". A mischievous thought came to his mind.
He turned towards his side and propped his head on his arm.
"Ishita.."
"Hmmm.."
"Tumne aaj Ruhi ko flying kiss kyu diya?"
"Arre meri beti first aayi na, isliye." she smiled remembering Ruhi catching it.
"Accha to mera kiss kahan hai?"
"Aapka kya?". She was jolted to the present. He saw her eyes widen, as she realized what he was saying, her face blossoming into a deep red.
He caught her hand and pulled her down. Now she was lying on her back, close to him their faces almost touching.
She tried to get up but he put his other arm around her and pinned her to the bed.
"Kyu mujhe kiss nahin dogi, first aane par?"
"Par aap first kahan aaye. Aap to second aaye the na?" she stammered.
Her brain had stopped functioning and she was grasping at straws to return to normalcy
"Last race main to first aaya tha na?"
"Par usme to main bhi thi. Iska matlab main bhi to first aayi thi!"
"Haan thats true..". He acted as if he was pondering. He saw her relax slightly and smiled.
"You are correct! So, you too deserve to be kissed for coming first" he murmured.
"Kya.. aap.. kiss.. mujhe! Nahin mujhe kuch nahin chahiye", She tried to wriggle out of his grasp and failed.
"Par mujhe to chahiye.. mera prize. Aur tumhe bhi milega. Tum to hisab rakhne mein believe karti ho na, Insaaf ki devi!".He hugged her tighter.
"Raman, chodiye na please...Raman!" she whispered. Her mind and body in conflict. One of them wanted to stop him and the other to go ahead and taste those lips.
Not sure who was telling what.
Not sure whether to stop him or whether to pull his head down
She closed her eyes to clear her mind and realized her arm had snaked on its own around his neck. She opened her eyes a teeny bit to see a slight smile tug his lips and realized that he was pulling her leg all this time.
Her flush deepened at the way her body responded to him. No, his prank, she thought.
She was upset.
No confused.
She should feel relieved right?
But she didn't!
Mazak ki bhi hadh hoti hai yaar! she thought. She wanted to tell him off, but then she thought why not turn the tables.
She weaved her fingers into his hair, slightly massaging his head.
"Raman.." she whispered opening her eyes and locking it with his, her mouth still dry from the rollercoaster ride that her heart had just undergone. She lightly licked her lips and saw Raman's eyes focus there. She heard his soft moan. Using the momentary distraction she pushed him back on the bed and rolled over him before he could protest.
Still weaving her fingers through his hair she said "You know what, you are right, Raman"
"Right.. about what?", he stammered now..
"About the kiss.." she murmured. Raman was taken aback. What's wrong with her, he thought. Did she take me seriously?
He was baffled. A second ago he was the one who was teasing. He didn't even realize when the tables had turned
And his malfunctioning brain was sending out shrill alarms. He was surprised no one in the house was hearing it. Stupid brain. Stopped working when he required it the most.
All he could make out was that his wife, was lying on top of him, her warm, soft body molding against his. Ishita was saying something softly, but his mind was busy elsewhere, busy sending (all the wrong) signals to his body while his eyes were stuck on her lips, tracing the soft outline, taking in every indentation
Her long, beautiful hair fell on him like a curtain, the smell of the flowers in her hair intoxicating him, her body smelling of a heady mix of fresh soap and something faint and sweet. Something like her..
He shook his head trying to concentrate. "Err..sorry say that again.."
"I was asking, ki kahan kiss karoon?"
"Eh..?"
She slid her fingers on his cheek checking Raman's face- "Yahan? ya phir Yahan?" lightly rubbing her knuckles on the other cheek..
She knew she had his complete attention. Thankfully, his eyes were confused - whether to watch her face or follow her hand as she slowly walked her fingers on his chest.
"Ya yahaan..." lightly drumming his ribcage and placed her palm over his heart.
She could feel his heartbeat racing. She relished the effect she was having on him and was secretly glad that he didn't know what this was doing to her..
Raman's mouth opened slightly. He wanted to say something but no words came out. He was shell shocked to see his seemingly innocent and straightforward wife tease him this way.
Ishita slowly lifted her hand and placed it on his parted lips..
"Ya phir , yahaan..." and she slowly ran her fingers along the edges of his lip.
"Kahiye na Raman.." she purred seductively
He knew it was now or never. If he didn't stop her now, he wouldn't be able to stop himself.
Summoning enormous mental strength, he bolted from the bed.
"Yeh kya kar rahi ho tum.. pagal ho gayi ho kya"
"Arre, aap ko hi to chahiye thi.. Kiss.. to de rahi hun na..Aapki baat maan rahi hun to bhi daant rahe ho" She pouted sitting on the bed.
"Oh God!" he thought.. "Bhag ja bhalla, aaj teri izzat khatre main hai. Yeh kisse panga le liya maine!" and picking his shirt, he ran towards the door.
Ishita was calling him "Suno na.. Raman...aap to trailer dekh ke hi dar gaye!"
She chuckled seeing him run... "Raavan kumar.. Bade aaye mujhe chedne..Wah Ishita!.. Raavan Kumar ko Manoj Kumar bana diya tune. Munh chupake bhag gaye"
Thank God, she thought turning towards the mirror, "Raman dar gaye, nahin to Ishita aaj to to gayi". She noticed her face was still flushed and radiating heat. She tried to cool down by fanning her face. She remembered how her body reacted to Raman and groaned. She turned off the light and quickly settled on the couch.
She was scared if Raman came back she wouldn't be able to face him.
A little later she heard Raman's footsteps. She quickly closed her eyes and acted as if she was asleep. She opened them slightly and saw him hesitating near the door and staring at her.
Assured that she was fast asleep, he slowly tiptoed towards the bed and quickly settled between the sheets.
Ishita chuckled softly and closed her eyes
Raman meanwhile tossed in the bed. He turned to his side and the smell of jasmine flowers startled him.
He thought Ishita had come back to tease him again.
Startled he opened his eyes, but there was no one. His eyes went to the couch and he saw her sleeping peacefully. Surprised, he moved his hand over the bed and found a couple of jasmine flowers. They must have come off when he had pinned her there.
He closed his eyes, smiled and told himself- Takkar ki biwi mili hai tujhe Raman Kumar Bhalla..Ab neend kahan aur chain kahan
