Sudha Malhotra was Sahir's love too although they had about 17 yrs age difference . she mostly sang classical songs, and also was a beauty! Sudha admired Sahir's talent and Sudha's songs, beauty and character attracted Sahir. But, this was not accepted by her family! … Finally, Sudha was married to someone else.

After abuout 3 years of her marriage, filmi get-together organised by B.R. Chopra. Sahir met Sudha over there! He couldn't control himself… he drank a lot… created problems… Chopra and Sahir were close friends. Chopra somehow sent Sahir to sleep. On the next day, when Chopra went to Sahir's bed, Sahir was still asleep. There lied something written on a paper beside him. Chopra said about this that he was overwhelmed by what he read there! Cinema instinct in Chopra woke up. He thought of the situation in the poem… and it grew into a film… GUMRAAH....... The song "Chalo ek baar phirse…" is the one that Chopra found on Sahir's bed that day!

A bachelor to the end, Sahir fell in love with singer Sudha Malhotra, relationship that never fructified in the conventional sense and left him sad. Sudha's fathers wouldn't accept Sahir, because of his perceived religion. Sahir, perhaps, had an answer to such artificial barriers in these lines written for Naya Raasta (1970):

Nafraton ke jahan mein humko pyaar ki bastiyaan basaani hain
Door rehna koi kamaal nahin, paas aao to koi baat bane
