Mauli is original and she has an original new style which is very enjoyble. She should never copy other singers style, She has a very unique gift she should preserve it. She has lots to contribute to the modern Indian music by sticking to her unique style.

If she has an orginal style of singing that should rflect on any song sung by her. I feel she does not really have her own style of singing. She tries her best to copy the original song , she just copied Mayya Mayya better than Udhar Chali song. I had even heard Rashmi Vijayan sing that Mayya Mayya song in II3(not in performance but in background) , she too sounded as good as Mouli.

Human voices are combinations of vibrations generated by vocal chord. There are minute diffrences between each person. That is how we distinguish each persons voice. There must be very few, if there are any, repeats in the voice pattern in the human beings. Even animals also have unique voices. That is how mothers recognize their babies and vice versa, in the animal world. So, the word Originality in voice applies to every body. But if we are talking about the style of singing, there is no surprise that each singer depending on their own voice, try to ape an established singer, to be recognized. In other words, singers like Nihira Joshi who has sweet voice will surely try to emulate Lata. Mauli is definitely not any different from that angle. I am sure she is also aping some one, who? I do not know.

I am not a learned musician but from my common sense this what I think. Songs are marriage between the lyrics and the surs (notations). In that there is definite weight given to surs, alaps, lays, bols, taranas, mukhda and Antara (not listed in any particular order)with liberty given to enhance within the rules of that raga. They ae systematically placed to make the song sound melodious to us. If even one sure is misplaced during singing, the song sounds very strange, even though that sur is very valuable in other song. The art of singing is to execute the order given by the composer exactly as was designed.

Now the question that should be discussed is who among the contestants, are following the rules rather than discussing the word "Originality". Every body is original in my view. I think originality comes when one takes a tune, holds the notations in a very very narrow range and enhances or improvises without distroying the intended message.

I am editing this post again. This time I am putting forward what I think should be considered originality. And that is establishing a new trend in singing. I will just give you one example. Nihira Joshi ( I am her fan obviously) set a trend by singing Hare Rama Hare Krishna in C2005 by singing two diffrent genre singers, Asha Bhonsle and Usha Utthap Iyer. I do not recall any one else has done that before her (if some one has, then, please enlighten me). That in my opinion is the originality. I know Pawni Pandey of Ll. Chmp and Iyer of ASVOI from Jaipur also sang the same song in similar fashion in two different events. I would not consider those two singers as original.

Very well said and agree with your views .

Somehow i feel that "Hare Rama song(I have not heard the one sung by Nihira Joshi though i heard Pawni Pandey and Sumithra Iyer) highlights the movements in lower octave which is very uncharacteristic of female voice and people simply get impressed by this. It mainly demonstrates the lower vocal range of the female singer but not much of singing nuances.

Gopalbhai,

Nihira was the first one to sing that song in both octaves. She was wonderful. Pawni and Sumithra repeated that after Nihira. The original song was sung by Asha Bhonsle (feminine voice) and Usha Uththap Iyer (a very maculine voiced lady). So the song covers both octaves. Women naturally sing in highter frequencies because that is their natural range. But for a woman to sing in a wider bandwidth, requires lot of voice control. Nihira did a wonderful job and so did others too. But in my opinion, Nihira was the pioneer in singing this type of song. And that was my contention for the subject of originality.

I am the same person with another id "corvallisi". But I am in different town and computer so different id.

2nd edit: Thanks to Varasha Tai she provided me the link of Nihira's rendition I am forwarding that for you.
