Movie Review: Life In A Metro

Life in a Metro a movie directed by Anurag Basu…is a movie which likes its tag line successfully narrates many emotions people in a metro like Mumbai face during their daily grind. Now the emotions are based on love in all its forms. Many other movies have been made on this urban theme but this one differs and also excels in the way the movie is so deftly handled.

The movie revolves around 7 people living in Mumbai and how their life goes through different twists and turns.

In a nut shell people seem to be connected to each other but not really knowing or realizing it. Each living his own space and happiness and hardly bothered by others presence. People having affairs and not even their room mates know about it like the case of Kay Kay having an affair with his sister-in-laws room mate and his sister-in-law has no clue about it, well certainly not before much water has spilled…sorry for the pun as the movie shows Mumbai infested with rain…

The movie successfully has woven a story of people connected to each other for the sake of love or security. Extra marital affairs are the new 'in thing' in movies these days and here is another movie which explores the subject deeper. Sorry for the pun again. The movie also has shown quiet boldly about a live in arrangement between old heart throbs who meet after 40 years of separation played by Nafisa Ali and Dharam Paaji.

The movie also boasts a first of its kind which is the music. The singers are also a part of the movie and this I feel didn't really click well. I prefer the old style of musicians staying in the background and it didn't really seem to do any good. The music is good though and seems well woven in the story.

The movie apparently doesn't seem to have many flaws which is a definitely plus point and all the actors and actresses are good except for Dharmendra paaji. He seems out of place and if I was in charge of the casting I would have definitely gone for Naseeruddin Shah or Boman Irani. Nafisa still looks stunning and Shilpa after her Big Brother success was promoted as the main heroine but thank god she isn't. Konkona sen is a charming actress and slips into any role with definet ease. Here too she delivers an astounding performance and so has Irfaan Khan. He simply excels in these roles. In the movie he plays a working unmarried male looking for a life partner on matrimonial site. He plays this role to perfection and also makes us laugh by his earthy touch towards life. Kay Kay is his usual self and seems ok. He needs to add more variety to his acting or chances are he might end up repeating himself which is not good for an actor of his caliber. Shiny Ahuja plays the role of a looser pretty well and seems one for real.

The movie is a definitely watchable and I strongly recommend this to all who want to feel the urban life with much salt and pepper.

Thanks Anup for giving us the first hand review on the movie and its always nice reading them.

I would even suggest how about rating them in the scale of 5.

That will be a good addition to the review.

Cheers,
Vijay

Lovely review hun, the movie pretty much lives up to its expectations and the trailer does not mislead. What about Kangana, did she play her usual role in a AB movie, the troubled eye-candy? Would you agree it portrayed the issue of infidelity more convincingly than KANK? I felt KANK was given too much of a hard time because it was produced by a big banner and starred the big names. Clearly, the sensitive issue is not that intolerable since Metro was still made.

I watched Life in a Metro last weekend and I was mighty impressed with the movie.. This was my first movie of Anurag Basu (had given Murder and Gangster a miss) and what I liked the most about the movie was how well he had knitted together the different tracks running in the movie very well...

I think, the movie very much reflects the changing values of the society today and it shows how the ties are let lose just to achieve the illusive somethings in our lives... The track of Nafisa Ali and Dharmendra is very symbolic that wants to say that some things in life are worth leaving everything else behind and come back... Nafisa looks at her stunning best, just wish that someone more polished could have been cast in the role of Dharmendra.. I would vouch for Suresh Oberoi or Naseerudding Shah here...

Sharman Joshi has matured a lot as an actor, and some of the best expressions in the movie are on his face.. His subtlity is what impresses me the most... This was the first movie of Kangana Ranaut that I watched, and somehow did not find her worthy of all the hype that is around her! She is good, but not great.. I wish, she had a more expressive face and some better dialog delivery... Kay Kay as the black character in the movie was brilliant as usual, and I would love to see how he does a lighter role.. The scene in the movie where he confesses his relationship with Kangana to his wife Shilpa is very nice.. How his expression changes when he hears about his wife's infidelity is brilliantly portrayed by him... Shilpa looks gorgeous.. and must say that Big Boss has brought in truck-loads of confidence in her.. she was as good as she was in 'Phir milenge' and has been given very cool looks and costumes to look brighter... Shiney Ahuja did not have a very well sketched role and perhaps deserved more meat for an actor of his calibre.. but he makes that character very very believable.. That he cannot leave behind the city inspite of everything else leaving him behind, is a very interesting end to his track... The best role and the lines in the movie however are reserved for the brilliant Irfan Khan and the very sensible Konkona Sen Sharma.. Konkona has been given a very stylish look and I just loved the natural flair of her and Irfan's character.. Irfan ofcourse walks away with the best dialogs of the movie...

The musical score by Pritam is different and the songs never seem to be out of place in the movie.. Though much of the music may have been copied, but I liked the overall musical arrangement of the movie... 'In dinon dil mera..' is a song, that you keep humming for sometime...

The overall credit of holding together the different tracks very tightly, however goes to Anurag.. he uses some brilliant editing to maintain a great flow in the movie.. The sets and lights are great, and everything seems very very believable... The only place that one cant relate to is perhaps the last horse chase of Irfan Khan, but by that time you have loved the character so much, that you take it as a part of his idiosyncracy...

As for the movie - I think this is one of the best movies I have seen in this year so far... Not for a moment you feel dragged and you just look fwd to the next shot with equal eager... Agreed that the movie will not do well in the smaller towns and sub-urbs as the subject may be too much and somewhat immoral to handle for the people who are far more conservative... They may not be able to identify with the subject... But I am sure the Metro Multiplex crowd will rave about the movie as I am doing curretly... Good job Anurag Basu and the entire crew... I would rate this movie a very high 4.5 on 5
