Final Mahasangram
A. L. Chougule

The first season of Comedy Ka Badshaah will come to an end on a grand note on Sunday, May 13. A sneak peek into the show...

omedy Ka Badshah's grand finale will be a big two-and-a-half-hour event of some super stand-up comedy performances involving well-known names like Raju Shrivastav, Ehsaan Qureshi and Deepak Raja besides well-known television stars like Ali Asgar, Karishma Tanna and Sangeeta Ghosh adding their own bit to the fun quotient. To be anchored by Manini Mishra and Suresh Menon, the grand finale will see seven contestants each from India and Pakistan competing for the title of Comedy Ka Badshaah. The action is at Concorde Studio in suburban Mumbai and when you visit the sets you wonder what comedy act has Sangeeta Ghosh in store for viewers. After all, she has so far been stuck in dramas of tears and marital discord. Or for that matter Ali Asgar, who is mired in the machinations of family politics and revenge drama in Kahaani...'s Aggarwal family. Or take the case of sultry Karishma Tanna who has done away with her cameos on TV and is currently enjoying her break. What will she do in a laughter show? Even Anu Maliik makes his presence in this comedy show... There are lots of surprises in store, we are told. Ali Asgar who has been paired with Deepak Raja will show his flair for stand-up comedy. "I began my career with comedy serials and have done lot of sitcoms before I got a change of image with Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. So in Comedy Ka Badshaah, I will be doing what I am really good at. I have cried a lot and want to laugh and make people laugh. I am a celebrity comedian here," says Ali. For Karishma Tanna it is an interesting change from crying, igniting past romance or taking revenge. "I have been paired with Ehsaan and we will do a four-minute humour and gag act. I am doing stand-up comedy for the first time and really looking forward to it," she gushes. However, Sangeeta will not be a part of the stand-up comedy business. The actress who loves dancing and has done some stunning performances in Nach Baliye will sizzle on the stage of comedy. "I will do a medley of three popular songs. No comedy for me. I don't think I can handle it like real comedians do," she admits. Ask Anu Maliik about his presence on the sets of the stand-up comedy show and he says he is there to cheer up a talent that he discovered during Indian Idol auditions. Neha Sharma from Kanpur did not impress the judges of Indian Idol with her vocal chords. Instead she impressed them with her flair for comedy. "She is a bad singer but real good mimic artiste. She will rock in Comedy Ka Badshaah," says the music composer, adding, "I am here to support and cheer for her. Besides I am going to have great fun watching ace comedians like Raju, Ehsaan and Suresh." If Anu is going to have fun, so will the viewers who will watch talented comedians from India and Pakistan battling it out in the final Mahasangram episode. Gone are the days when comedy was only used to add lighter moments to the melodrama. Comedy has finally come of age and television can take full credit for it. As comic actor par excellence Rajpal Yadav, who makes a guest appearance in the finale episode says, "Television shows have given an opportunity to comedians not to only showcase their talent but also make a livelihood. A comic actor who could not afford to buy even an 800 square feet flat has today reached a stage when he can buy his own bungalow!"

The grand finale of the comedy show promises to have lot of fun and laughter with hosts Manini and Suresh, both known for their flair for comedy, and a host of celebrities adding to the fun and comedy quotient. However, it's not the end of stand-up comedy on Sony. It's just that the show is going in for a seasonal break and will be back in a new format that will have TV stars and comedians pairing up to tickle viewer's funny bone - a la Jhalak Dikhla Ja - where the actors besides doing comedy will be a main attraction for eyeballs and the comedians will do the actual job.
