There was an article in today's Delhi Times which talked about the lives of singers after they won reality shows, both in India and abroad.

Abhijit Sawant: First Indian Idol, lots of hype, one album (Apka Abhijeet) Fades away..

Qazi and Rooprekha :Winners of Fame Gurukul. lots of hype, one album (can't remember the name..) fade away..

Sandeep Acharya: Second Indian Idol (did he release any album?) No sight of him..

Debojit: Winner SaReGaMaPa C-2005 No recent news or songs

Vinit: Runner-up C-05, favourite contestant and no news except one song in Good Boy Bad Boy recently

Ok, so this is just a small list of talent hunt winners in India. Coming to the west;

Jennifer Hudson: American Idol finalist, wins Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Dreamgirls

Sanjaya Malakar: American idol finalist, one of the most popular contestants and also the one "who has absolutely zero singing knowledge" according to most. Has been invited to the White House and Britney Spears has expressed a wish to work with him.

Kelly Clarkson: First American Idol winner, today, she is one of America's most popular singers.

Ok, so these are a few statistics I found, and after reading that article, it really made me wonder, why do the winners of Indian reality shows fade away like this? We only have examples of Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal who have made it big, and that was after years of struggle. Also, they were both participants in the talent shows at a time when drama was given almost nil importance against singing. So, what's wrong today? Why have none of the winners of our talent shows come out and left a mark like abroad? It isn't like they have more talented singers. Our singers are equally talented. Then why this sudden fading away after all that hype and fame? Even if they do get to sing in movies, the songs aren't of the same calibre a music director would give to the establshed singers. With the exception of Nihira who's actually making a mark in the Hinid music industry, none of the other singers have gone far. In fact, after singing one or two songs, they're just lost somehwere.

Why this twist of fate after so much hype? Where do the winners go after that "great win"?

Just wanted to know what all of you felt about this!😳

But don't forget that the winners of these contests are donning new avatars of TV hosts and anchors as well as stage performers. Debojeet hosts the Bengali SRGMP. Himani comes in Antakshari. Most of the ex-winners have a grilling schedule of stage shows all over the world.

If nothing else, they will be paid huge sums to come and perform in wedding functions. 😆

Great stat 👏 Even I wonder whats happening to the new talent?? Forget the recent winners, wat about the winners of previous series of SRGM?? Whr hv those ppl gone who had sound knowledge over classical music and folk music??

But onething that I would like to point out is - True talents have always been recognized.. Nihira and Hemachandra have already got breaks from big banners.. And im sure, they will rock 😊 Himani, Debu, Vinit, Viswas have become anchors of various shows.. Twinkle is performing extremely well in her serial.. To recognize Shreya, Sunidhi also took years, so im sure for the other singers it will take time but the their talents get recognized and does not fade away

First, all these ppl, at least the Indian contestants, have made pots of money by doing shows, so that is an achievement in itself.

In terms of singing, many will agree Nihira was the most accomplished, so she is getting what she deserved.

You have left 2 notable ppl out. Hema, you could argue, was one of the best, if not the best among male singers. His problem was diction, but that was not his fault as he hailed from the South. From what I hear he has been fairly successful in the Southern film music scene, again to be expected.

And little champ Sameer is in great demand for shows and has done playback. Again, that was expected.

As for the rest, just use your commonsense. Is Sandeep Acharya, in the same league as Nihira or Hema? The answer is no. So do you expect him to get the same breaks? Again no.

1) Supply and demand - In this country, supply exceeds demand, so most singers don't find a regular place.

2) No entry - It's difficult to break into the A-scene which is dominated by a few who have been around a long time.

3) Competition - The established singers selfishly guard their own interests and detest competition.

4) Public memory - Reality show singers are only popular until the next one comes along.

Even Nihira isn't going to make it anytime soon. She has like 3 songs in a year and a half. And none of them are memorable.

same goes for Twinkle Bajpai.. Saregamapa contestent but doing pretty good in Betiyaan even after a lot of comments on her "not-so-good" acting..

yup its hard to find ur feet in a country with a population of more than 100 crores now wonder the faces get lost in the crowd thres a lotta talent but thres not that much demand. whith directors like himesh taking seats of singers half of the music indusrty is outta work. altught talent has been recognized thru saregama pa in the past singers like sunidhi, sonu, shaan shekhar outta the vishal shekhar duo has been an ex contestant and who can frget shreya ghoshal vineet is thre who might nt be dng lots of playback but charges a kings ransom for the stage shows he does, twinkle bajpayee is being telecasted a sthe lead actress in a daily soap deebojeet and himani are doing anchoring seperately even the liil chams are doing hoards of stuff on television. no compaision tp the popularity of talent show winners in the west but to tag them as unsucessful will be not fair theyre doing good for themselves.
