chapter six

"Abeer, get down on your knees." Sunil commanded. "We don't want to hurt you. Just turn yourself in for now and we can sort all this through." He spoke in a cautious tone, not wanting to alarm the young man.

"Where's Meher?" Arjun yelled, contradicting Sunil's tactic.

"Arjun, calm yourself." Sunil demanded.

"No! Now that we've finally caught him, I'm not letting him go." Arjun spoke frantically, clutching his gun tightly. "I'm asking you one last time, where's Meher!"

The constable who had been observing Arjun's behavior anxiously, feared he might hurt Abeer. Yes, Abeer is a suspect in their case right now, but that did not entitle him to be treated like a fugitive.

"Abeer, just do as they say. Tell us where Meher is and you won't get hurt." The constable pleaded.

"He's not going to listen like this," Arjun spat out and started marching towards Abeer.

Grabbing the boy by his collar, he punched him in the jaw with the butt of his gun.

"Arjun!" Sunil shouted, now completely shocked by the state of his partner. "You can't do that!"

Sunil attempted to pull Arjun back by the shoulders, but he was shrugged away. Fearing for Abeer's life, without thinking, Constable Pratap grabbed Arjun and held him down.

In the frantic exchange, Arjun had accidentally pressed the trigger, setting off a loud bangin the room. The three officers ducked their heads with instinct and shut their eyes due to reflex. When they opened them, they saw a flash of black blur run before their eyes and crash through the window. Pieces of broken glass and wooden debris flew outwards along with a body. Arjun pushed the constable off himself and followed the same suit.

"Arjun!" Sunil shouted out the window as he saw Arjun land on the ground and run after Abeer. "Damn it!" He smacked the wall and ran out the door.

As Sunil and the constable reached outside, they were able to barely hear the two shots that were fired against the strong wind and rain.

"Pratap! Call for backup right now!" Sunil yelled at the constable as he ran in the direction he had thought he heard the shots being fired.

Sunil ran down the street with the rain pouring heavily down his back, when he heard another shot.

"Arjun!" He shouted as he caught a glimpse of his partner.

He ran down an alleyway and jumped over a few soggy boxes that were littered along the way. Sunil heard the police sirens in the distance and prayed hard that the back up police will be able to reach Abeer before Arjun did. He simply was not able to understand why Arjun had started behaving so aggressively.

When Sunil made his next turn, he skidded to a stop as he almost slipped on the wet footpath. Having lost sight of both Abeer and Arjun, Sunil ran a hand through his dripping hair. With the few dim, swaying lights hanging outside some small shops, Sunil was unable to see any trace of where the two men went.

Feeling a vibration in his pocket, Sunil took out his phone and answered.

"Hello?" He answered out of breath.

"Sir, it's me Constable Bheede Pratap. Arjun sir has been taken to the hospital." The junior officer informed.

Sunil's heart beats accelerated and his breathing labored.

"What? Which one? And.. how did this happen?" Sunil questioned, not being able to comprehend the events that could have taken place. They were right in front of him just a few moments ago. "I"m so stupid! Is he okay?" Sunil slapped his head for being so dense.

"He's fine sir. I'm with him right now. We're headed towards the City Hospital. By the way sir," Sunil paid closer attention as he noticed the tonal difference in Constable Pratap's voice. It had gotten quieter, like he was telling a secret. "Arjun sir was saying that it will be much easier to catch Abeer now."

"How so?" Sunil asked.

"According to him," the constable whispered, "he shot him."

Sunil ran a hand across his face, not believing how far things got out of hand.

"How badly is he hurt?" Sunil asked.

"I have no idea. We weren't able to catch him. But if what Arjun sir is saying is true, then he will definitely be checking into a hospital to get treated. Arjun sir already got extra patrol placed in the nearest hospitals as well as some walk-in clinics."

"Hmm," Sunil nodded his head. "Okay, Bheede, I need you to send someone else to guard Arjun. Have them keep us informed on his health. But I want you back at the station. Until Arjun doesn't come back, you're working with me on this case." Sunil instructed.

"Right away sir." Constable Pratap, heeded and hung up the phone.

Sunil, on the other hand, started back tracking his route to Miss Sharma's place. The cool breeze and wet droplets falling onto his face were doing wonders to clear out his mind. During his walk, he tried to go through the hectic events that had transpired during the day. Nothing was seeming to make sense. Ever since Miss Sharma's body had been found, Arjun had been acting strangely. His thoughts had become morbid and his actions aggressive. Sunil feared his partner might be starting to break down from the stress coming from the case.

He rubbed the back of his neck and sighed.

Even he was stressed out. He was not happy about finding another corpse either. But with time he had been able to detach himself from the victims. He had learnt that their deaths are not his responsibility. His job is to find the culprit and then hand them over to the law. After that, whether or not justice is meted out, it's not up to him.

But from the amount of days he has gotten to know Arjun, he does not think that way. Arjun takes the cases seriously, but in a different matter. The deaths, they're personal to him even when they needn't be. Sunil had advised Arjun to stop himself from thinking this way as he's only going to end up hurting himself in the long run. He's uncertain of how far Arjun took his advice to heart, but he sincerely hoped that he would at least regard it.

Upon reaching the intruded home, Sunil greeted the other officers that had assembled. After giving his statement on the encounter that had taken place with Abeer, Sunil got into his car. He had given a description of Abeer and had informed them about his possible injury. He wasn't sure of how far Abeer had gotten or even how extensive his injury was.

Putting the key into his ignition, Sunil starts making his way back to the station.

Trying to put himself in Abeer's shoes, Sunil could understand why Abeer was unresponsive to their commands earlier on. Or at least to some extent. Abeer had been caught surprised by three police officers, whom he had been trying to avoid for so long. The fact that he had been first received by a vehement Arjun, who had greeted him with a revolver pointing straight at him, would have frozen him. His limbs would have locked and the hairs on the back of his neck would have risen. His brain would have focused its entire attention on Arjun as he was the one posing the most danger to him. Constable Pratap and Sunil would have been considered harmless compared to Arjun. In fact, if Arjun hadn't been there, Sunil would have bet that Abeer would have fully co-operated with them. But Arjun's aggressiveness scared him off and presented the entire police force as a threat to both him and Meher.

Sunil hit hand against the steering wheel in frustration.

If that was the case, if Abeer no longer trusted them, then trying to find the two would now become ten times more difficult. Sunil is now certain that the clues that they had found earlier, were all carefully placed as breadcrumbs for the police to follow. Unfortunately, they had picked up the crumbs but had also scattered them all over the place again.

Reaching the station, Sunil got out of his car and headed inside. He was expecting to find Constable Pratap and the items that Abeer was searching through, to be waiting for him inside in his office. He didn't care how long it would take, Sunil wanted to get answers to some of the long pending questions he had.

Entering his office, Sunil found the constable sifting through the various notes that Sunil had made. Granted, they weren't as extensive as Arjun's was, but at least it would have gotten the constable some sort of idea of where their investigation is at thus far.

"Thank you for coming Bheede." Sunil bowed his head slightly, before taking a seat behind the table.

"Thank you for officially inviting me onto the case sir." The constable sincerely replied.

"So, before we get into all this," Sunil laid a hand on the plastic bags containing Miss Sharma's belongings, "let me get you up to date with what we know so far.

There have been a series of deaths of young girls - all of different causes. However, there are certain physical features that tie them together. For example, their hair color - brunette; their skin complexion - fair; their age - early twenties. Apart from that the one thing that we have been able to connect all the girls with is the fact that they all took dance lessons from the same dance teacher - Miss Sharma, who now, is dead.

About two weeks ago, a break-in was reported from a hostel by Meher Purohit. The message itself was fairly short with her being frightened and whispering about an intruder. However, shortly after making the call to us, she made sure to contact all of her close friends about the ongoing incident. The phone lines at the station had started to get busy with all their phone calls inquiring about the speed of the police force.

Upon reaching the hostel, there were no signs of a break-in apart from the bathroom. The entire dorm was left untouched apart from the bedroom where there some signs of some tampering. However, nothing of great importance seemed to have been missing. It is believed that Meher had jumped out the bathroom window, landed in the rose garden, and then made a run for it. But considering how great the height was, she had to have hurt herself. So, in that condition, I'm not sure how far she could have gotten.

All forms of security were disabled. Meaning, all the security guards in that wing were made unconscious and one week worth of security videos had gone missing.

By the time the police had arrived, all the girls from the ward had been shifted over to the boys' for their safety. Some boys had gone as a group to help Meher out, but it had been too late by then.

We interviewed everyone who had given us a call at the station, including her parents, the head master, her friends etc. All their statements are there in that file." Sunil pointed at the bulging green file that was situated in the corner of the desk.

The constable picked it up and started skimming through the statements.

"When we had initially interviewed Abeer, his reactions had been similar to the other students. He was in shock and did not know about Meher's whereabouts. We were basically at a dead end for a while. No one knew where Meher had went and they hadn't known much about her. As for her family, they were completely distraught and when they heard about the dead girls that were showing up, they were becoming erratic.

But, two days ago, Nisaar shows up at the station with this photograph." Sunil slid the said picture of Meher and Abeer towards the constable who picked it up. "He had found it in Abeer's room, under his pillow. It was the only personal belonging that was evident in the room. Everything else that belonged to Abeer had been either missing, or in our belief, taken away by him."

"How did Meher contact him?" The Constable asked.

"Excuse me?" Sunil asked, confused.

"By now it's clear that Abeer didn't leave to clear his mind or get a break from the ongoing investigations. For two whole weeks, he had remained low, to himself and didn't attract any attention to himself. Then all of a sudden he's gone without a trace? And then we find an intimate picture of him and the other missing girl? It's evident that Meher had contacted him and that's why he left. But the question is how and when."

Sunil nodded his head.

"Arjun and I had thought about that too. At first we thought, she might have contacted him at Rocco's, the place where that photograph has been taken. When we went there we found out that Abeer and Meher had been there when the restaurant had first opened. Meher had been frightened to be there. Like she was scared of being seen in the public eye. But after speaking with Abeer, she had settled down enough to open up and sing and dance at the party." Sunil leaned back in his chair and shut his eyes. "However, after all that was done, Meher was found talking to someone anxiously. It was as if she had met the very person she was scared of meeting."

"So, was it at Rocco's that they made their first contact?" Constable Pratap asked.

Sunil was about to answer when a song started playing. He opened his eyes as a very familiar tune started playing but he was unable to pinpoint exactly where he had heard it.

He leaned forward and thought hard while the junior officer answered the phone. Informing his family about his late arrival to home, he hung up and looked at Sunil questioningly.

"Anything the problem sir?"

"That song," Sunil said slowly.

"Oh I'm sorry if it's annoying. My daughter heard it on the radio a few days ago and has been completely obsessed with it. She changed everyone's ring tone to this so that when the phone rings she would at least have an excuse to hear it." Constable Pratap explained. "I can change it right now."

"No!" Sunil exclaimed, making Constable Pratap stare at him surprised. "I... I heard it somewhere before. Play it again."

Obeying, Sunil pulled up the song from his music playlist and let it play.

A guitar started strumming and a male's voice sang.

Jukhi teri palkhon mein mil jaaye mujhe panaah
Palkein ghire aasoon bhaari reh jaaye mere nishaan
Toote dil ki maat kar tu fikar mere humnava
Pyaar doon tujh ko iss khadar
Reh jaaye mere nishaan

"Stop." Sunil instructed.

He took out a piece of paper and began penning down the lyrics.

"When was the song first played?" He asked while writing.

"I would say about two, three days ago." The constable answered, unsure of the exact date.

"Right about when Abeer went missing." Sunil revealed.

The constable straightened up as he latched onto what Sunil was trying to say.

"This song, was a message for Abeer?"

"Exactly." Sunil said. "I heard a similar version of this song being played atRocco's inauguration party. And I'm damn sure it's the same song that Meher and Abeer were playing in the greenhouse.

Look at this, the first line of the song:

Jukhi teri palkon mein mil jaaye mujhe panaah

It's about finding comfort and a type of safe haven in another's company.

The next line:

Palkein ghire aasoon bhaari reh jaaye mere nishaan

The tears that fall leave behind my signs. Now, these words, mere nishaan, they can be interpreted in so many ways. Nishaan can refer to a sign, a mark, a scar -"

"A clue." Constable Pratap added.

Sunil snapped his fingers.

"Exactly! Now, let's assume that the first two lines are from Meher for Abeer. Then in Abeer's response, these will be his lines.

Toote dil ki maat kar
Tu fikar mere humnava
Pyaar doon tujh ko iss kadar
Reh jaaye mere nishaan"

"Don't worry about the broken heart, I'll love you so much that you'll be left with my mark..." The constable translated. "Whatever the problem was with Meher, Abeer knew about it and was doing his best to help her out. We know that she was a brilliant student so whatever was troubling her was not related to academics."

"Right. Her friend circle was just beginning to form so she couldn't have had any major problems from them either. The kids that I spoke to were all very sincere and deeply troubled by what happened to her."

"So then whatever was bothering was coming from home." The Constable pondered. "In your reports, you had mentioned that Meher's father, Shyam, he had started becoming verbally aggressive when he found out about Abeer."

"Go on..." Sunil encouraged, about to grasp what Bheede is trying to say.

"Well, according to your notes," Bheede pulled out Sunil's notebook that had accounted personal details of everyone they had interviewed thus far. "Shyam is a professor and look at where he just got posted his new job at." Bheede turned the file around for Sunil to see, pointing at the line where Shyam's current occupation was stated.

"Isn't that Meher's college?"

"Yes." Pratap answered grimly.

Sunil took a deep sigh as the pieces started clicking for him.

"So let's suppose Meher is being terrorized by her father at home. Because of that she has been afraid to socialize with others in fear of being judged both by Shyam and others. Then, she meets Abeer who helps her out in trying to break out of that shell."

"Let's not forget the dance classes. Meher had felt free and open there until recently." Bheede reminded Sunil.

"Perhaps Shyam started attending the classes as well? To keep an eye on Meher?" Sunil proposed. "We can call up the other girls' families to confirm."

"But sir... the murders of the other girls... do you think Shyam might have committed them?" Bheede questioned.

"Yes, he did."

Sunil and the constable looked towards the entrance of their office to see Arjun standing there with a crutch.

"Arjun, what are you doing here?" Sunil asked, getting up from his seat. "Shouldn't you be at the hospital resting?"

"I was, but then I met our favorite rockstar there."

"You... where is he now?" Sunil asked, speechless.

"In the interrogation room, giving his statement." Arjun replied, walking further into the room.

Bheede got out of his seat and offered it to Arjun who took it graciously.

"While you were at Lost Safari, I was here with Miss Sharma. Turns out she had put up a great fight before dying. There were a lot of bruises found on her abdomen and upper arms. In her defense, she had to have gotten some sort of DNA off of her attacker. So when I asked for a DNA analysis to be done, it matched up to Shyam's. Some of his dead skin was found underneath her nails." Arjun informed calmly.

"Did you send someone out to arrest Shyam or should I?" Sunil asked, feeling like a huge burden had been lifted off of him.

"I took care of it. They should be bringing him in any moment now. I suggest you go and listen to Abeer's statement though." Arjun said, pointing to the doorway with his crutch.

"What about Meher?" The constable asked.

"Said he would hand her over once Shyam has been captured first."

Bheede nodded and began gathering all the evidence.

Obeying his partner's advice, Sunil ran towards the small cornered office that they used for interrogating suspects. Upon entering, Sunil saw Abeer seated in the grey room with his hands folded on the metal table. He took a seat opposite him and opened up the notebook that contained the listed questions that Arjun had assigned. Glancing them over, Sunil looked at Abeer and noticed the changed clothes he was wearing and scrunched his eyebrows. He surely must have met Meher once before going to the hospital.

Sunil straightened his back and folded his hands across from him on the table.

"So, shall we begin?"

chapter seven

"Well Mr. Malhotra. You have made quite a buzz here at the station." Sunil said. "Your supposed heroic antics have caused quite some trouble in the department."

"Are you looking for an apology?" Abeer asked, not amused.

"No. What I want is for you to cut out the bullshit and come forward with the truth." Sunil curtly replied.

"Ask the appropriate questions and I'll answer. I won't be saying anything else." Abeer replied.

"Where's Meher?"

"Safe."

"Abeer, if you want appropriate questions then I expect appropriate answers in return." Sunil said angrily.

In response, Abeer remained silent.

Huffing, Sunil asked another question.

"Do you know who attacked Meher?"

"Her dad."

"Care to elaborate?"

"He had been assaulting her." Abeer clenched his fists to control his anger.

The air in the grey room became heavy and increasingly thick. It had become too quiet and every following word that came out Abeer's mouth, echoed. The lump that had been stuck in Abeer's throat was swallowed down with great difficulty.

"Ever since she was a child, but even more so as she grew up. When she came to the hostel, she was quiet. Wouldn't speak much with anyone. I used to bother her a lot. I just wanted to see her smile." Abeer softly spoke with a ghost of a smile on his lips. "But then one day she broke down and just started crying. She told me how her dad would try to invade her life completely. Try to know every little detail, who she met, what she said, how long she had stayed out, what she wore, what she ate... everything." Abeer scrunched his eyebrows in disgust and anger. "It had gotten to the point where she had begun to feel suffocated. To make her feel better, I had taken her out to Rocco's. She was having a bad day and I thought something new will do her some good. It had worked. Until he came there."

"Shyam? He's the one that she had met outside of Rocco's?" Sunil asked.

"Yup. He didn't know for sure, but he had suspected she was with a guy. He bruised her that day." Abeer paused. "I wanted to hurt him so bad for hurting her like that. But she stopped me. Said there was no point in me getting involved since it will only make matters worse."

"And the attack in the dorm? Why sneak in like that?" Sunil asked.

Abeer licked his lips as he thought about his next response.

"What do you know about the suicide-murders?" Abeer asked.

Sunil straightened up.

"You think Shyam did them?"

"I know he did. Just think about it. He has been so possessive of Meher and has been hurting her since she was a kid. Then as she grows up, his... his urges must have been awakened." Abeer spoke in absolute disgust. "When she wouldn't respond, he had to have gone somewhere else to please himself."

"But there were no signs of sexual assault on any of the girls."

"A sexual activity is not the only way to gain a satisfactory release."

Sunil bit his lip as he pondered over the new facts.

If Shyam had been abusing Meher as a child, her reserved behavior had made sense. In many child abuse cases, most family members were clueless about the abuse that would take place in their very own homes. They might not have suspected anything due to Meher not reaching out to anyone. As for the dance classes, the one place where she could have found an outlet to release her frustrations, was also obstructed because of Shyam.

"Did Shyam start visiting her dance classes?" Sunil asked for confirmation.

Abeer nodded.

"It's where he saw all the other girls for the first time. Meher told me that the way he would look at them all... especially her... it made her feel uncomfortable." He rubbed his hands over his face. "She was getting really disturbed, so I told her to talk to Miss Sharma. Since she was in charge, she had the authority to prevent him from observing the classes."

"Do you think she took action?"

Abeer shrugged.

"I don't know. Maybe." Abeer's eyes went distant as he recalled the sequence of events. "It was after I gave her the advice that Meher got attacked. If Meher had told Miss Sharma about her dad, and Miss Sharma had brought it up while speaking to him..."

"Then his anger could have motivated him to attack." Sunil finished off.

Sunil tapped his pen on the table in frustration.

"Are you going to charge him?" Abeer asked angrily.

"Not until we have Meher's statement. But even then, we won't be able to charge him for murder. Merely domestic abuse."

"But... he's the one who killed the girls!" Abeer yelled.

"That's enough! There is no definitive proof that suggests that. Him assaulting his daughter, prying into her life or eyeing other young girls is not proof of committing murders. Everything you have said is biased because of your compassion for your friend and hatred for her attacker. So do not think about trying to sway me into your emotions and brainwashing me into acting the way you want me to." Sunil said pointedly.

"That's great. No wonder, Meher didn't trust you guys. All the proof is in front of you and still you turn a blind eye." Abeer scoffed.

"Abeer, mind your tongue. There is no proof on the other girls. Apart from the fact they had all taken part in the same dance class and appeared the same, there is no other connection between them. Even their cause of deaths weren't the same."

"And Miss Sharma? What about her? Is she also a suicide?"

"That I can't tell you. It's classified." Sunil refrained. "By the way, what were you doing at her place anyways?"

"I was looking for a recording." Abeer answered.

"Which contained..." Sunil encouraged.

"A confession." Abeer leaned back in his chair. "I got a call from Miss Sharma last night. Apparently, she had gotten Shyam to admit to his crimes."

"How?"

"Because he's easy to wind up. You might have noticed while talking to him, just press the right buttons and he'll start gushing like a water fountain."

"Where is this recording now?"

Abeer shrugged.

"Didn't get the chance to find it."

Sunil made a few extra notes in his notepad before standing up.

"You'll be taken to the holding cell until you've been allowed to leave."

When he reached the door, he paused and turned around.

"Abeer... for whatever happened to Meher, I'm sorry."

Sunil left the interrogation room without taking a backward glance at Abeer. Abeer's testimony had given them a lot to think about and all the evidence as of right now, pointed at Shyam. But still, Sunil couldn't shake off the feeling like something was wrong. If this was a mere domestic abuse case, why stretch it out so much by running away like fugitives? Why not just come forward for help?

Entering his office, he saw Arjun sleeping on the red cornered couch while Bheede was at the desk, making some reports.

Picking up a file, Sunil read some statements Abeer had given at the hospital while was being treated for his injuries.

Abeer had first found out about Meher's predicament from the police when they had interrogated him. In the following days, he had been distraught over how his friend had been attacked within her own comfort zone and then was forced to run away from safety. At first he had suspected she would have returned home within a few days. But when a week had gone by and there had been no sign of her, he had started becoming agitated. Meher should have reached out to someone by now for some sort of assistance. There had been no way she would have been able to protect herself appropriately against the intruder.

One night Abeer had been in the greenhouse, strumming his guitar. He had had the radio playing in the background to distract his mind whenever his fingers had stopped. That's when he had heard the initial segment of his song broadcasting live to a large audience. It was in that moment that he knew Meher had been reaching out to him for the song that had been playing, was composed by both him and Meher. It had been made during the time Meher had allowed someone to know who she really was. Her fears and insecurities had been slowly revealed to him and as a way to comfort her, they had begun composing. It had soothed her immensely to know that somebody had been out there to support and help her in difficult times. So for her to play a song that had been so private to them to the entire nation, Abeer had known it was a desperate cry for help.

The next day, Abeer had gone to Chaudhry's and ordered a bowl of Clam Chowder along with a Lost Safari, knowing that they didn't have those specific items. Thankfully the waiter who had been serving him had been one of the chatty variety and had mentioned a young woman asking about the same items the previous day. Gaining that information, Abeer had immediately left for the hostel and packed his belongings to make his escape. He had known that if he were to help Meher out, he had to temporarily break his ties from everyone he knew. He knew that he could have reached out for help at any given time from the police or his family, but he didn't want to risk losing Meher before he had had the chance to find her.

So after taking all the essentials with him, he had left for Lost Safari; a location that had been chosen as one of their safe havens for in case of emergencies. The other locations,Chaudhry's, Rocco's, the greenhouse, they were all randomly chosen by them to be served as emergency routes for them.

Regardless, following through, Meher had come to Lost Safari, and they had left right away. They hadn't known at the time that Shyam and Miss Sharma had been meeting at the same place. If they had, they would have prevented the meeting from taking place or at least cautioned somebody about it.

Meher and Abeer had been by the major highway when they had received the phone call from Miss Sharma about the recording. Abeer had left Meher at a private hotel while he had gone to Miss Sharma's place to deal with the evidence. But when he had arrived, he had heard about her death and had resorted to try finding the evidence for himself. But before he was able to, he was interrupted by the police and then attacked.

"This will account for how Meher and Abeer ran away." Sunil said closing the file. "And his statements inside," he pointed at the entrance door, "will account for the murders."

"By the way, Shyam was brought in while you were talking to Abeer." Arjun spoke in his sleep.

"And?" Sunil inquired.

"I spoke with him. He can be charged for the murder of Miss Sharma, but not the other girls. There's no definitive proof for that." Arjun answered.

"And there's definitive proof for Miss Sharma?" Sunil asked just to be sure.

"Yup. Apart from his DNA that was procured from Miss Sharma, he was caught on camera at several places. First was at Lost Safari where they had initially met and talked. Shyam was getting increasingly agitated and aggressive. When Miss Sharma left, he stayed back for a minutes made a ruckus. Then a couple hours later, they were caught on another camera, this time by the docks. Audio wasn't too clear, but from the looks of it, he was pleading and requesting a lot but she wouldn't budge. That's when he started attacking her. She put up a really good fight but it didn't do any good. He strangled her while her head was being washed over with the sea water. When he saw she wasn't responding, he took her body and stuffed it into his trunk. That was captured on the security footage for the parking lot. When it had gotten dark out, he took the body out of the trunk, dumped it into the water and left like nothing had happened." Arjun narrated the sequence of events.

"And we got all this on footage."

"Yup. He's not escaping from this one."

"What about the other girls?" Sunil asked.

"We can run another DNA test on them, but I doubt we'll find anything on them. For the other girls, it's all circumstantial evidence. Charging Shyam with their murders will be futile. It's best if we stick with Miss Sharma and the domestic abuse."

"Should we bring in Meher for her statement?" Bheede asked, standing up.

Sunil looked at Arjun's laying form and then Bheede, nodding his head.

chapter eight

"Do you feel it?" Sunil asked, standing beside Arjun, behind the concealing mirror.

They were watching Meher finish the last of her testimony and sign some of the important legal documents that will imprison her father.

"From the moment we got this case." Arjun replied. "Something is very off about all this."

"Still, Shyam has now been charged with third-degree murder, breaking and entering, damage to property and many accounts of assault. Meher now no longer has to live in fear." Sunil said, trying to find some optimism out of this gruesome case.

"Regardless, something is very off. I just.. I can't get it out and pinpoint what it is exactly."

"Want to go over everything one last time?"

Arjun nodded his head and followed Sunil into their cabin.

Sunil sighed before going over all the facts for the last time.

  • Meher has been abused by her father which had reflected in her behavior
  • She had found it increasingly difficult to live her life peacefully due to the constant interference of her dad
  • She had reached out to Abeer and Miss Sharma about how uncomfortable her dad had started making her feel
  • Miss Sharma had first confronted her dad about not visiting the dance classes anymore
  • Shortly after, Meher was attacked by her dad in the hostel
  • She waited for a few days until she had felt safe enough to contact Abeer for help
  • He left everything to help her out while simultaneously leaving behind clues for the police to follow
  • The first clue had been the intimate photograph taken at Rocco's which also happened to be the place where Meher had been confronted by her father
  • The next clue was at Chaudhry's where Meher and Abeer had confirmed their next meeting location on different days
  • Lost Safari was where they had met up and ran away together
  • It was also close by to where they had found Miss Sharma's body
  • Abeer had been found in Miss Sharma's house, looking for a supposed recording that will implicate Shyam to all the murders
  • From his statements, Abeer had acted in a manner that he had thought would give Meher the best protection
  • When Shyam had been brought into questioning, he had repeatedly refused to be the one who had broken into the dorm
  • However, security video tapes had captured him murdering Miss Sharma
"That's about it for the important facts and details." Sunil said.

Arjun remained silent, unable to shake off the uneasiness he was still feeling.

Bheede entered the office to inform them about Meher's departure. Now that the case had been solved from their end, it was being transferred over to the legal department. Whether Shyam gets punished for his crimes, was now officially out of their hands.

"Come on," Sunil said, tapping Arjun on the shoulder. "Let's go get a drink."

He picked up his jacket, with Arjun following suit.

"Where to?" Sunil asked, shrugging into his black jacket.

"Let's go to Rocco's." Arjun said, wanting to end the investigation there.

"Okay," Sunil nodded. "Just to warn you though, there's a formal dress regulation there and I'm quite certain, crutches isn't one of them."

Sunil teased as he opened the passenger car door open for Arjun.

"Ha, ha, very funny." Arjun mocked.

They bickered and battered throughout the ride to the restaurant. He wouldn't dare say it out loud, but he felt much better now that the case was over. Arjun was no longer being consumed by the darkness of it all. Upon his advice, he had started visiting a therapist to help him through every case.

The manager that they had initially met was out of town for business. Hence, they were being taken care of the assistant manager, who was all too eager to help them out.

As they were browsing through the menu, Arjun scrunched his eyebrows as he noticed one of the items under the seafood section - Clam Chowder.

"Hey," Arjun spoke, getting Sunil's attention.

"Hmm," Sunil replied, not looking up from the menu.

"Clam Chowder." Arjun clipped.

"You want some?" Sunil asked, oblivious to Arjun's train of thought.

"No, you idiot. Isn't that what Meher and Abeer had ordered at Chaudhry's?" Arjun asked, frantically.

"Yeah, but so what? It's just another item on a menu. It doesn't mean anything." Sunil tried shrugging the case off.

"No, but think about the locations that they chose and then the behavior of the owners." Arjun said. "Chaudhry's, they didn't have these specific items and yet Meher and Abeer ordered them there. But why go through that much trouble? Why didn't Meher simply leave behind a message for Abeer at the greenhouse or at the hostel? And how did they know that they will both be there at those precise moments."

Sunil put down the menu as Arjun started becoming agitated.

"I don't know Arjun, maybe it was all just co-incidence." Sunil tried brushing it off.

"Or maybe it was all planned." Arjun spoke, finitely.

"What are you trying to say?" Sunil asked, now intrigued.

"That all of this, it -" Arjun was about to explain his train of thought when his phone rang.

Answering it, he identified himself.

Sunil noticed how in a matter of seconds, Arjun's guard went up in defense.

"We're on our way." Arjun said, before hanging up.

Grabbing his crutch, he began walking as fast as he could towards their car with Sunil scrambling behind him.

"What happened?" Sunil asked, worriedly.

"It's that bas***d Shyam." Arjun spat out.

"What about him?"

"He's dead!" Arjun yelled over his shoulder, halting Sunil's steps.

"What?" Sunil was shocked as to how such a disaster could happen within the precinct. "But... how?" He ran after Arjun to open the door for him.

"Poison." Arjun whispered into the air, and looking at Sunil pointedly.

Sunil's face paled.

The whole ride to the station was grim as both officers were lost in their minds. Shyam's death was a disaster in more ways than one. They will now never be able to find out if he had any involvement in the murder of the other girls. Not to mention, Meher wouldn't be getting justice now either. But above all, this brings down the reputation of the station as with so many officers on the scene, they were unable to safeguard a suspect. No matter what the charge was laid against Shyam, he was still innocent until it was judged otherwise in the court.

Getting out of the car and they proceeded immediately to where Shyam was held. The holding cell had a body lain on the floor covered in a white sheet while officers were guarding it.

"How did this happen?" Sunil asked his junior officers.

"Sir, we're not sure." One of the constables spoke up.

"What do you mean you're not sure! It's your job to protect this man!" Arjun yelled.

"Sir, no outsider had come to visit him." The same constable spoke.

"Who was the last person to see him?" Sunil asked.

"Bheede." The constable who worked at the entrance to the holding cell spoke. "He said there was one discrepancy left in the investigation and since he was working on the case with you two, he had the authority to go ask him."

"And what made him think that?" Arjun spat out.

"When you were at the hospital, I asked him to join me in reviewing the evidence." Arjun stood back.

"And why would you do that?" Arjun asked.

"Because I couldn't trust your state of mind at the time." Sunil retorted.

"So you went to a constable and invited him to an exclusive case without doing a background check?" Arjun accused.

"Look, I admit I was at fault in that but we still don't know if Bheede was the one who killed Shyam. All we know is that he was the last one to see him. We don't know how the poison was administered, what kind it was or how long it has been in his system." Sunil pointed out the facts.

"Find that Bheede." Arjun spoke. "I don't care, I want that Bheede standing in front of me."

Arjun brushed Sunil aside and stormed towards his office.

"And someone get me his file!"

chapter nine

Sunil had his head hung low, his hands wringing each other tightly.

"How long are you going to do that for?" Sunil asked, irritated by the sound of Arjun's crutch.

"Until I found that damn guy!" Arjun yelled. "I can't believe it. He was right under our noses, we let him interrogate our suspects, look extensively through our files. We trusted that bas***d!"

"Do you feel at ease now?" Sunil raised his head.

"Excuse me?" Arjun turned around and glared at his partner.

Sunil, who was sitting on the sofa, looked pointedly at his partner.

"Do you feel at ease now?" Sunil repeated himself.

"You think I wanted this to happen?" Arjun asked, offended. "You think I wanted that creep to die while he was in our safeguard?" His eyes squinted and his face was beginning to get red.

"No. But I do think that you had wanted something to happen. That uneasy feeling you were having," Sunil made circles in the air and pointed in Arjun's direction. "It must be gone now right."

"Don't." Arjun said pointing at Sunil.

"Come on Arjun." Sunil sat back against the sofa and sarcastically smiled. "You wanted this case to be complex. You wanted it to have so many layers and so much mystery so that when you solve it, you will be labelled as the best officer in the city. So that you can get medals, and awards. Right?"

"Sunil! That's enough!" Arjun flared.

"Sir," A constable knocked on the cabin door, and hesitated, sensing the tension in the air. "We got the post mortem reports."

"Bring them here." Sunil ordered with a come hither hand gesture.

Obeying, and averting eye contact with Arjun, the constable handed the file over to Sunil and left the room.

Arjun walked around the desk and sat down in the chair before him to rest his leg.

"That's interesting." Sunil remarked.

Although Arjun was paying attention, he didn't reply.

"The toxicity levels... they were unable to determine them."

Unable to hold in his curiosity, Arjun spoke up.

"What about the symptoms?"

"Umm... it was determined to induce a hallucinogenic state. He had received a high fever, his pupils were dilated, muscles became weak which then had eventually led to a paralysis." Sunil read.

"The constable who found him had said he was blabbering something incoherent. They hadn't paid attention to him at first since he had been talking non-stop during his time there. It was when they had become really irritated that they went to check up on him." Arjun corroborated.

"And that's when they found him dead." Sunil finished.

"Yup. Have they been able to identify the poison that was administered?" Arjun asked.

"Yeah, it's..." Sunil paused as he read the name of murder weapon.

"Stop being so dramatic and spit it out." Arjun barked.

"Angel Trumpets." Sunil whispered.

"Angel Trumpets?" Arjun said to himself confused.

"It was at Abeer's place... in their greenhouse." Sunil explained.

"Greenhouse? It's a plant?" Arjun asked.

"Yeah, it was this white drooping flower." Sunil mumbled, feeling sick to his stomach. "Nisaar told me not to touch anything there because they were really poisonous."

"Who in their right mind grow poisonous plants in their backyards?" Arjun groaned, rubbing his hands over his face. "Where are Meher and Abeer right now?" He questioned, his patience now all gone.

Sunil took out his phone and first dialed Abeer's number. When there was no response, he called up Meher, but once gain, there was no response. Seeing Sunil's shaking head, Arjun called out for a constable.

Before he had the chance to enter, Arjun yelled, "Find me Abeer, Meher and that Bheede. And don't show me your face until you do."

Bowing, the constable ran out and frantically started asking his co-workers for help.

Sunil sighed deeply and wrung his hands.

"How did we miss this?" He whispered to himself. "It was all right in front of us, but still..."

"They played us. From the very beginning." Arjun said, shaking his head in disgust. "The security guards, they must have been drugged by Meher while Abeer took care of the security cameras."

"And the intrusion?" Sunil asked.

"An act? Remember Shyam kept blabbering about how he never went near the hostel?
Well, there was no break in from the front door. She must have let Abeer in and made a huge commotion. No one else was able to see the intruder. The other girls in the hostel, they didn't even hear her scream. She let Abeer in, made a mess out of her own room, locked the bathroom door so that Abeer could break it down." Arjun hypothesized.

"Then Meher hid at a place owned by Abeer for a few days while he fooled us. Then when it was time, they conveniently left certain clues, like the photograph and the locket and the code words so that we followed them along."

"And then sidetrack us by thinking that Shyam is the main culprit here."

"But isn't he? We have definitive proof that he murdered Miss Sharma, but nothing to suggest that Meher and Abeer were behind Shyam's death."

Arjun pulled at his hair.

"What was Miss Sharma doing at the Lost Safari?" Arjun asked exasperated. "I mean out of all places, she had chosen that same location as Meher and Abeer."

"Perhaps she was meeting them there." Sunil offered.

"No. We checked all the video footages, there was no sign of the three being together."

"Then maybe she left something behind."

"Like what? Money? A place to stay until everything boiled down?"

"Well, I'm not Miss Sharma's spirit who would be able to tell you everything, now am I?" Sunil bit out.

Arjun scratched his eyebrow.

"Well, will someone tell me what the hell is going on?" Arjun asked.

"Look," Sunil sat forward on the sofa. "Our case was relevant to the murdered girls, Meher, Abeer and Miss Sharma. We have found Meher, safe and sound. We have found Abeer, safe and sound. We have found Miss Sharma's murderer. Now, as for the girls, we had suspected Shyam to be their killer as well. If this is the case, there will be nothing to worry about with Shyam's death. However, just to be sure, we can keep a vigilant eye out." Sunil reasoned. "And besides, it's not as if we would be allowed to investigate into Shyam's death. Someone from higher will be coming in."

Arjun nodded as his partner's words rang true in his mind.

"That's true. So, what's our next move?"

"We write up a report about what happened and submit it. The rest they can handle it."

With that, Sunil got up from the sofa and sat opposite Arjun.

Together they both began writing up their individual reports detailing the events that had taken place since the investigation had started.

epilogue

Meher shrugged her shoulders lazily as she felt fingertips crawl up the naked skin of her shoulder. The warm breath hitting the back of her neck sent shivers down her spine and a smile spread across her lips. As she shifted, she felt a pull, sending her back towards a strong chest.

"Abeer," she whispered smilingly, as she turned around to face him.

Lazily opening her eyes, she saw the glow still lingering onto her lover's face from last night.

"It's time to wake up." She mumbled, resting her forehead against his.

Abeer on the other hand, shifted his body so that his weight rested upon hers, their legs both entwined.

"Let's sleep some more. It's been such a long time since we've gotten a peaceful night of sleep." He mumbled into her hair.

"Peaceful?" Meher laughingly asked, nudging his shoulder. "You call last night peaceful?"

"Of course baby." Abeer replied, now fully awake. "Now it's not my fault that you can't keep it in." Abeer raised his hands in playful surrender.

"Abeer!" Meher shrieked his name in surprise.

"Oh god, you have no idea how much I love it when you say my name like that." Abeer said, pinning Meher down and pressing wet kisses by her earlobe.

"Then why don't you show me?" Meher taunted.

Abeer seeing the glint in her eyes, smiled wickedly before kissing her.
