TV actress Shalini Kapoor was involved in a car accident on Tuesday evening. The accident occurred on Link Road, close to Bangur Nagar in Goregaon. "I have escaped without injuries, but it has been a traumatic experience," Kapoor told hitList.
Kapoor was driving her green Hyundai Accent, from Andheri to her residence in Malad, when, according to her, "a BMC truck tried to overtake the car. The driver began to act as if we were in a race, and before I knew it, he had hit the left side of my car."
Immediately, Kapoor called the police, who rushed to the spot in 10 minutes. Within a few minutes, the warring parties were at the Bangur Nagar police station. "But instead of my problem getting solved, the situation actually worsened from there," informs the actress.
Asked for damages
"I wanted the errant driver to pay at least Rs 7,000 - that's the minimum amount I'll have to shell out from my own pocket, despite my car being covered under accident insurance. The insurance scheme will cover about 80 per cent of the damages, since my car is in its second year. The damage is quite serious, and repairs will easily cost Rs 40,000 at least," Shalini says.
At the police station…
According to Kapoor, the police intensified her ordeal. "They asked me why I was making an issue, when I would be getting the money from my insurance company. When the owner of the truck arrived, the officer-in-charge put a hand on his shoulder, took him aside and spoke to him very politely. I could sense that there was some underhand deal going on," she recounts. No settlement
Kapoor then thought of dropping charges and having an out-of-court settlement with the truck driver. "I was shocked when the owner of the truck told me he would have to pay to the police anyway, and he might as well pay them, rather than settle amicably with me. And he paid them! Some time later, he was willing to give me only Rs 3,000. What her friends saw
I walked out in exasperation after wasting three hours at the police station, and a couple of friends came over to take the matter further. Later, they came home and told me that the truck owner told them he paid Rs 1,500 to the police, and hence, was unable to shell out more than Rs 1,500 for us. They saw that when he offered Rs 500, the cops threw it back at him." Didn't take money
Shalini is shocked that the truck driver has been left off. "Since things are so easy, he might become more reckless on the road now. In frustration, I took the case back, and did not even take Rs 1,500 from the truckwallah," Kapoor says. "Pata nahin meri gaadi phir se pehle jaise lagegi, ya nahin. Itne armaan se le thi maine." |
