Comedy on television moved away from reality shows this year, and diversified into different genres. One such move, which was pegged on the most powerful relationship between man and God, children and their connect with folklore, had shows that married the comedy genre with historical and mythological characters.
Stories of Akbar and Birbal have a direct connect with children, and so you had Har Mushkil Ka Hal - Akbar Birbal, with Kiku Sharda and Vishal Kotian as Akbar and Birbal respectively. Says Uditanshu Mehta, creative director of a channel, "People love and continue to watch things that are larger-than-life. The GECs are already doing historical shows, so it was an organic decision for us to merge comedy genre with a historical one.Audiences relate easily to faith and fantasy and therefore, the marriage between comedy and history or mythology works better."

High on heart and humour, the show Neeli Chatri Wale has Lord Shiva (played by Himanshu Soni) solve issues of a middle-class family with Yashpal Sharma playing a middle-class man with hopes and aspirations, who finds himself in different situations. The show also highlights the relation ship between God and man.
Satyajit Sharma, who has played supporting and negative roles in the past, will for the first time play a comic role in the show Bal Gopal Kare Dhamaal. The story again explores the unique equation of a common man with God in modern settings. Sharmaji and Bal Gopal's chemistry is recreated on the lines of the Arjun-Krishna duo from the Mahabharat, where Bal Gopal helps him solve issues of everyday life. He says, "I have purposely stayed away from comedy as honestly I was not inspired by anything that was happening then in that genre. But when Bal Gopal's story came my way , I thought it was a good opportunity for an actor to play a role like that."
The makers of Mahabharat are now tapping comedy in their new show, Yam Hain Hum where the mythical character of Yamraj will descend on earth with his friend Chitragupt. Manav Gohil, who plays the lead role, will have strange encounters with humans on earth. Says producer Siddharth Kumar Tewary , "Working on such concepts is challenging. It is true that these characters are loved by masses, and you have to be careful when you incorporate humour and satire in such situations."
Now whether these shows will score high on ratings is something that only time will tell, but one thing is for sure, the coming days will see comedy getting innovative with their subjects and characters, especially those based on legends.
