We have a mythology that is a treasure if explored well. Instead of icchadari nagins mayuri, nevala and bees and crapy dayins chandramonies and patalies .
We should be proud our heritage

Actually even the vampire stories are said to have originated in India from where the stories later reached other continents in a distorted manner. So you could vampires are also a part of Indian legends.

Thank you so much Whitewitch and Rein for this lovely thread. It has been really informative.

And I agree with you.Our mythology is so rich. The Mahabharata is an epic which surpasses the Illiad and the Odyssey both together. We have the Ramayana, the Puranas, the Manusmriti and many more things. It's really sad that TV shows choose to promote pathetic superstitious things like dayans, chudails, mor and nevla instead.

Your welcome :) coming back to chudails and daayans has anyone watched Ekta's latest offering called 'Kawach' . Yesterday thanks to my sister I had a glimpse of the show and I must say it is full of crap and actively promotes superstition.

Nice! I started researching vampire legend origins after I saw an episode featuring something called a rakth pisaach which is similar to vampires in fear files. I must say the info I found seemed very convincing about the vampire legends origin in India.

Actually in India there are legends of the Pisacha.Pisacha are creatures like Vampires.Actually Pisacha are vampires only. The term Pisacha is used for both Vampires and Zombies.
So yeah vampires are their in our folklore too.And much before the Western folklore.

Yes it is true vampires Indian word is pisacha..I used to argue with my mom when she used to term vampires as pisacha I hate that word I had to justify my vampire hero but when I started searching more info I came to know both were same and my mom was right πŸ˜†

I'm just wondering why didn't Ekta use the term Pisaach instead of Vampire in PKYEK? I mean both the terms mean quite the same thing, did she by any chance perceive that the audience would skip the show if they used an indian term to dscribe vampires..

I was just researching on Pisaach and this is what I found
[ Pishacha are another sort of vampire creature of Hindu mythology. They are flesh
eating demons, typically associated with being feminine. They are described as having red, swollen eyes and bulging veins. These creatures are nocturnal, of course.
They are said to haunt cremation grounds, like many of the other demonic beings of Hindu lore. Some legends describe the pishacha as being created by Brahma himself. Brahma is one of the Hindu Trimurti, and a Creator god, one of the most powerful gods in the Hindu pantheon.
Another legend claims the pishacha were the sons of Krodha. The word Krodha means "anger or "wrath in Sanskrit, and may have related to an actual person or deity at some point.
Other legends tell of the pishacha being created from Daksha, who was another Creator in Hindu myths, part of the Prajapati; "creator gods. The pishachas are classified as being a separate race from humanity. Humans do not become pishachas, though they can be possessed and controlled by one. The pishachas are even believed to have their own language called Paishachi.
The pishachas can change their form, according to some mythic traditions, and some accounts also say they have the ability to become invisible. Other accounts say that they can enter the body of living humans, and use them to feed on others. Or they can create illnesses in those that they possess, or make their human hosts go insane. Anyone who sees a pishacha is doomed to die within nine months, according to some myths.
The Hindu traditions do have beliefs about driving away or ways of protecting against the pishacha. Chanting certain mantras can exorcise a person possessed with a pishacha. Mantras can keep away these demons. Also, giving offerings and participating in religious rites like the puja can keep a household safe from demons.]
