Aroona is unhappy!
Aroona Irani |
She's among the original vamps of Bollywood. Aroona Irani, in her long filmi career, has done myriad roles.
Famous for her sensuous dance moves, Aroona rues that dance moves in Hindi films these days "are only restricted to vulgar pelvic thrusts." Aroona, who once sizzled on the screen, no longer feels like seeing the dances in films these days because, she says, "Everybody is wearing the same outfit in dance sequences these days. And that too the bare minimum! Yes, the only thing that changes are the colours!" She adds, "Dance toh industry se totally khatm ho gaya hai. The last film in which I saw good dances was nine years back in Taal. Ash's moves were extraordinary!"
The real dance, according to Aroona, is classical folk dance and if that is shown in films today, people will surely appreciate it, including the younger generation.
Going on about the entertainment industry, which she has known and loved since 1961 when she first appeared as a child artiste in Ganga Jamuna, she opines that much has changed now. For one "a hero is not a hero" and neither is a heroine the same. "Heroes and heroines are playing character as well as negative roles. In our times everybody played a specific role. Heroines never used to wear such revealing clothes! Vamps wore them. And even they didn't look as cheap," she says sounding quite disgusted.
Back to more pleasant topics, with so many dance shows on TV today, we wonder whether Aroona is keen to pass on her skills via one of them? "Well, I'd like to do a show, but I don't want to produce it," she states categorically.
But why? "Because I don't have the time. I'm already producing serials and a lot of my time goes into them."
That's probably why we don't see her in films enough. "Also, there aren't many roles of a mother or a saas written for people like us these days," shrugs the actress, who nevertheless will be seen in a guest appearance in a movie called Dhoondhte Reh Jaaoge.
The elegant Aruna still looks as beautiful as she did some forty years back. What's the secret, we wonder. "Hmmm....exercise regularly, sleep early and take a proper seven- to eight-hour shuteye. That's why I retire at 10.30 in the night, no matter what work is pending."
