CHAPTER 10
7th April, 2025, 10:30 AM outside CEBM Campus
Vidhi stood there looking at the big, black gate once again. She clutched onto her mangal sutra. The feeling was no different than the feeling she had on her first day. Well, if one really thought about it, the day wasn't any different either. It was after almost 6 months that she came back to attend her classes.
The last six months were quite hectic, very difficult at times, surprisingly peaceful and pleasant some other times, but had she the ability to go back, she wouldn't have it any other way.
After Adwait was born, she found it next to impossible to leave his side even for a moment for the first three months. Nursing one-month old Adwait, she had told Dev, "Dev ji mujhe lag raha hai ki main college aur padhai continue nahi kar paungi. College mein 75℅ attendance mandatory hai aur main iss mahine ek din bhi college nahi jaa payi, nahi pata fir se kab jaa paungi." Tears had rolled down her eyes almost involuntarily while saying so, but with a consistent smile as she looked at Adwait holding her finger with his little hand.
Lines of worry had appeared on Dev's forehead listening to her and looking at her helpless face, but he didn't say a word then. But the next day, he entered with an envelope and a big smile. After numerous letters of request and words of promises to the Principal, Academic Dean and Vidhi's batch coordinator, Dev had finally got a fix.
He took Adwait from Vidhi, handing her the letter. It said an exception in rule has been made for her only for the ongoing semester. Recorded lectures would be sent to her everyday which she could watch in her own time. Her internals and assignments would be taken online but she would have to appear for her third semester examinations with the rest of her batch after 5 months from then. If she passed in the sem exams, she would have to join college for her fourth semester but if she failed, she would have to start all over again and no requests would be entertained in that situation.
Vidhi was ecstatic seeing this. She couldn't believe her eyes. Dev came near her and said, "Mumma ko kabhi bhi apne sapno aur humare bich mein kisi ek ko choose karne ki zarurat nahi padhni chahiye." Vidhi smiled, remembering what he had said.
She entered the campus. Some known voices started ringing in her ears, "Fir se college kyun jaana bachcha hone ke baad?... Jitni padhai karni thi kar li. College-wollege chor abhi… Bete pe dhyaan de. Kya karegi padhke?... Itne chote bachche ko chorke college jayegi?" Among these voices, occasionally one would be hers as well.
Just like the day her third semester exams were going to start, Adwait had clinged onto her and wouldn't go to anyone else, not to his nanny, not to Bimla, not to Satyawati, to nobody except his mumma. She had questioned herself at that moment was her going to college worth leaving her son, crying like this. The mother in her said, "No, just stay with your son. He is little and he needs you."
But Dev had refused to give up on her dreams even when she thought of giving up. He stood there like a strong pillar, too adamant to bow. He had taken Adwait in his arms, saying, "Main sambhalunga Bubby ko. Tum jaao. Woh thodi der mein chup ho hi jayega, Vidhi. Tum jaao aur exam de kar aao. Aur suno jab exams de rahi ho, toh sirf uss par focus karna, tab ghar ki fikr, Bubby ki fikr mat karna. Yahan sab hain uske saath. Tum bas apne paper pe dhyaan dena. All the best. Jaao." Vidhi had left, hurt and teary eyed. Adwait's cries were piercing her heart but she didn't turn back. Now she was glad that she didn't.
"Areh dekho kaun college aaya hai….", Ivaan's loud call got Vidhi out of her trance. She had entered her class. "Heyyyy Vidhi, tu classes fir se join kar rahi hai… Wowww", her friends were excited to get her back.
"Fourth sem mein maximum practical aur vocational training hoti hai na toh yeh online nahi ho sakta, isliye. Kaise ho tum sab?", Vidhi asked.
"Areh hum toh mast hai. Pata hai 3rd sem mein Aashvi ko grand honours mila hai", Prisha said. Vidhi congratulated Aashvi with a huge smile.
"Tere results kaise aaye? Honours aaye iss baar bhi?", Abir asked.
"Main pass kar payi hoon iss sem mein, yehi mere liye bahut badi baat hai", Vidhi laughed, thinking about the preparations she had for her exams.
Well, her preparations mostly comprised of Dev with books in his hand, reading it out to her or explaining some topics to her while she nursed or held Adwait. Or maybe her sitting at her study table with books open infront of her, but looking at Dev playing with Adwait or changing his diaper or cuddling him. Seeing Vidhi get distracted, Dev would pick up Adwait and say, "Dekha mumma ko, Bubby. Kaise shararat kar rahi hai… Chalo hum aapke room mein chalte hai. Mumma ko bolo 'Mumma concentrate'. No badmaashi…No No No." He would make Adwait stick his index finger at her.
But sometimes, Dev would put aside Vidhi's books and pull her on the bed saying, "Family cuddle time." And then the two of them would shower hugs and kisses on their little bundle of joy and on each other. Giggles would fill up their entire room and lighten their hearts. On such nights, Adwait would fall asleep on Dev and Vidhi too, would snuggle up to him. Dev wouldn't stop kissing them until he himself fell asleep. Vidhi smiled, looking down, remembering these moments made her heart warm and fuzzy.
"Waise bhi tujhe zyada marks ya honours ki kya zarurat hai? Tera toh pehle se hi Indore ki sabse bade company mein job confirmed hai", Nainika rolled her eyes. She saw a chance to mock Vidhi and couldn't let that go waste.
Vidhi was too deep lost in her thoughts to answer her. But she came back to reality when Aashvi nudged her saying, "Tera beta kaisa hai? Kitna bada huya hai? Photos dikha na."
Vidhi pulled out her mobile saying, "Next week 6 mahine ka ho jayega." She opened her gallery and realised not just her life and her thoughts, even her mobile's gallery was suddenly all about him.
She showed them a picture of Adwait lying on Dev's chest while Dev kissed his forehead. All her friends went, "Awwww" together. As they swiped through the pictures, Prisha said, "Yeh kitna cute hai yaar. Iski aankhein kitni emotive hain. Mujhe bahut zor ka baby fever ho raha hai isein dekh kar."
Seeing Adwait in Dev's arms in most of the pictures, Ivaan said, "Daddy's boy lag raha hai mujhe toh."
"Haina?", Vidhi said, pumped up. "Main bhi Dev ji ko yehi bolti hoon lekin unko lagta hai ki woh Mumma's boy hai. Unhone toh mere saath shart bhi lagayi hai ki uska pehla word 'Mumma' hoga lekin mujhe lagta hai ki woh pehle 'Papa' hi bolega. Pura din unhi ke saath toh chipke huye rehta hai", Vidhi said while looking at a selfie she had taken while Dev was playing with Adwait.
"Good morning boys and girls. Aaj aapke fourth aur last semester ka first day hai….", their professor had entered the class.
7:30 PM that day, in Dev and Vidhi's bed room
"Bubby aaj mumma six months baad college gayi thi aapko pata hai", Vidhi showed Adwait six fingers. Adwait held her fingers with his hand and tried to put them in his mouth. Vidhi laughed and kissed him. She showed him different toys to play with but Adwait seemed to be more interested in playing with her fingers and the bangles on her hand.
"Kya kar raha hai mera beta?", Dev entered the bedroom. "Apne khilauno se toh bilkul bhi nahi khel raha hai", Vidhi said, smiling.
Hearing Dev's voice, Adwait looked around. He wiggled his arms and feet and squirmed around happily. Dev went to pick up him in his arms saying, "Mera beta, mera Bubby, meri jaan" but was stopped by Vidhi.
"Nahi, haath muh dhoke aaiye pehle, kapde badliye. Bahar se aaye hai, Dev ji", she said seriously, taking Adwait in her arms. "Okay mumma", Dev pulled her cheek.
Adwait started fussing as he saw Dev walk away without holding him. "Offo, ruk jaa thodi der. Papa abhi aa jayenge", Vidhi told him. Adwait frowned looking at her and babbled, pointing at Dev.
"Kya? Main jaanti hoon tum unse zyada pyaar karte ho. Daddy's boy ho tum bilkul. Ruko aayenge abhi aur uske baad dher sara pyaar karenge tumko", Vidhi said in a baby voice, holding him.
After 15 minutes, Dev came out of the washroom. Vidhi and Adwait was still sitting on the bed, waiting for him. "Bubby, main aagaya", Dev almost jumped on the bed.
But Adwait was now no more interested in him, a colourful book of alphabets had caught his attention. He was busy trying to turn the pages. He won't even look at Dev.
"Naraaz hogaya lagta hai. Itne time se wait karwaye na usein, isliye", Vidhi said, pulling away the book, which Adwait was so eagerly trying to put in his mouth.
Dev laughed, looking at Adwait. He sighed, resting his head on Vidhi's shoulders. Vidhi caressed his cheek gently, while both their gaze was fixed on Adwait playing infront of them.
"Bahut kaam tha kya? Thak gaye aap?", Vidhi turned her face to kiss his forehead. "Hmmm", Dev exhaled. "Tumhara din kaisa tha?", Dev looked at Vidhi. Vidhi nodded her head, raising her eyebrows with a big smile. Dev smiled back and once again, leaned on her shoulders.
Vidhi started kissing his head and forehead again. Dev smiled, his eyes almost closing due to this feeling which he couldn't put to words, but it felt just right. It was soothing. Everything he ever wanted was right there. He looked at Adwait and stroked his back. He looked at Vidhi, Vidhi kissed his nose and eyes. He moved a bit upward, whispering her name. He wanted to inhale her sweet intoxication. He parted his lips and closed his eyes, moving closer towards her. Vidhi too closed her eyes, smiling, getting ready for what's coming when suddenly Dev started shouting in pain, "Aaaahhh… mere baal, Vidhi."
Vidhi quickly opened her eyes to realise her little son didn't approve of whatever was going on. Adwait had turned back and somehow reached upto Dev's hairs, pulling them with all his might, expressing how he didn't like any other man except him, get close to his mumma. Vidhi couldn't control her laugh. She took Adwait in her arms and kissed him. Adwait put his arms around her and stuck out his little index finger towards Dev. Vidhi laughed out loud seeing how Adwait had used Dev's teachings against him. "No, No, No, Papa, say it Bubby", Vidhi said, chuckling.
"Excuse me, Master Adwait Raichand", Dev said, shocked to see an almost six-month old doing and understanding so many things. He took him in his arms and said, "Humein mumma ko share karna hai, thik hai? Tum aise saara haq nahi jama sakte ho unn par. Woh meri bhi hai." Adwait listened quietly with a serious expression as Vidhi continued giggling.
Holding him in his arms, Dev leaned on Vidhi once again only to get his hair pulled once more. "Areehhh", Dev said, looking at Adwait with wide eyes. Vidhi was hysterical by now. Dev leaned on her once again. Adwait now clearly objected to it making a shrill sound, and leaped in Vidhi's arms, placing his head on Vidhi's shoulders exactly how Dev had been doing.
Dev looked at him, wonderstruck. Vidhi kissed Adwait on his head, whispering, "I love you, Bubby" and mouthed, "I love you too", to Dev.
Dev opened his arms infront of her. She didn't waste a single minute and moved towards him. Placing her head on his chest, and Adwait under his chin, hugging him and pulling him closer as much as she could. Even Adwait found this more comfortable. Placing one hand on Vidhi's face and one Dev's chest, he lay there quietly. Vidhi sighed in relief the moment Dev's hand started to caress her hair. Dev felt his heart melt the moment they embraced him. They were each other's home. Cool breezes from the window calmed their warming hearts. City lights reflected throughout the room and their love shone bright as a star among the night sky.
14th September, 2025, CEBM Campus
Vidhi was standing behind her friends in a queue at one corner of the stage of the auditorium. The auditorium was beautifully decorated with balloons and streamers and confetti. A big screen was set in the background written 'Congratulations MBA batch 2023'. Posters featuring phrases 'Congrats grad' , 'You did it' and 'The best is yet to come!' were hanging all over.
A short video was being played which were made by the students themselves, clubbing different pictures and videos of all of them in the last two years. Selfies taken on first days, pictures captured in group picnics, embarrassing pictures of friends in their hostel room were beautifully edited with the song 'Night Changes' playing in the background. Vidhi was seldomly found in any of the pictures. But the best part was she wasn't disheartened with this fact. Instead as the song went -
"We're only gettin' older, baby
And I've been thinkin' about it lately
Does it ever drive you crazy
Just how fast the night changes?",
she turned around towards the audience, her eyes searching for someone. And there they were, in the third row, Dev sitting with a proud smile with Adwait on his lap. Dev waved at her. Vidhi could see him saying the word 'Mumma' in Adwait's ears as he pointed towards her.
Vidhi kept looking at them, rewinding the last two years in her brain. This whole thing that was happening today, didn't feel less than a dream to her. If she went 5 years back, and told herself about today, the old Vidhi wouldn't believe her. That girl who always remained low in confidence, always doubted herself, believed she was of no good, had never even imagined in her farthest dreams that she would be completing her MBA. Yet, there she was one step away from her degree. And all of these wouldn't have been possible if that man who was beaming with joy sitting in the audience didn't enter her life. It was on a day painted in grey, when he had stepped in her way. Where all she knew was dark, he came in magnificent, with the most brilliant spark.
"And our next student is Mrs.Vidhi Raichand", her Professor announced. Everybody clapped and cheered as she walked upto the stage. Her principal handed her the degree and shook her hands. They looked forward where a cameraman stood to click their pictures.
As Vidhi looked forward, she saw Dev clapping and cheering for her. He was constantly pointing at her to show Adwait. Dev was whispering in his ears, "Bubby, look that's Mumma. Can you say ''Congratulations Mumma'?" Adwait was smiling, showing his front and bottom 2 teeth and waving at Vidhi.
Vidhi waved back at them. She thanked her Principal and professors and was going to get down the stage, when amidst the diminishing sound of claps, came a loud and clear, "Mumma."
Everybody turned around. Vidhi stopped, flabbergasted. It was Adwait. He pointed his finger towards her and waved and said again, "Mum-maa." The whole auditorium laughed at his cuteness and went, "Awwww".
Vidhi was overjoyed. She hurriedly got down the stage and ran towards him. She took him in his arms and kissed him. Dev hugged both of them and said in her ears, "Congratulations, Mrs. Raichand. I am so proud of you." Kissing her forehead, he added, "By the way, I won the bet."
Vidhi looked at him, still hugging Adwait. She pulled Dev closer and placing her head against his chest muttered, "I won at life."
