Ah, my last post for Alka Yagnik. In the first round, it was her performance that moved me most and the same has happened in this, the final round.
Akaji has sung many, many songs, but her most spectacular work has come from under the baton of the maestro A R Rahman and one of my favorites, Anu Malik. And in this song, Alkaji has really poured her all. As was the case in 'Mere Humsafar' in the first round, this song is truly a perfect blend of music (A R Rahman), lyrics (Javed Akhtar) and singing.

It is a very difficult song indeed and has some very high notes, which I think have been handled beautifully. There was a slight loss of tonal quality at some points but that's fine because the notes she has to reach really are very high, especially given this is a Bollywood song. The harkats are polished and the small nuances flow nicely. This is no easy tune to sing, especially the finishing syllables of every line, which are do not end on 'shuddha' (pure) notes.
Having won marks on the technical side, the singing scores 110% for feel and expression. A lot of effort has gone behind the rendition every word, and it shows! Keep an ear out for the small inflexions that Alkaji has put into the words. After all, the song is ful of lyrics in which one word has to do a lot of talking. Just through the words 'Saanwariya Saanwariya', Alkaji has conveyed many emotions - and this has been done on other significant words, too.
I hope people recognise the effort that has gone into the song and appreciate the beauty that has come out of it.
TEN ON TEN! ----------------------------------------------------------------
