The lyricist was predicting Dev's future when he wrote Iss dharti par amar rahegi meri prem kahani 
I really want an edit of Kala Pani. All Dev- Madhu scenes! The one where he cradles her face in his hands and gazes at her in wonder saying, “Tum itni khubsoorat kyon ho, Asha?” And the one where he refuses to take her money that she offers him to give it as rent back to her aunt and then she looks at him and says breathlessly, “Mehmaan toh ghar mein rehte hain par aap na jaane kahan kahan chale aa rahe hain.” 
Pretty sure she was his favorite!
At least until the late 60s. After that, I prefer not to discuss his films
