Dev Anand@100: OG style icon who set hearts aflutter

When all his movies were huge hits in the 1950s and 1960s, every lady in the Hindi film industry wanted to be his heroine!

As the Indian Gregory Peck, he was well-known in those days. Then, his beau, Suraiya pointed out how much he resembled the Hollywood celebrity.

If women wanted him, men wanted to be like him.smiley10

His identifiable walking style—a slight, almost endearing limp, bent knees, and a head tilted to one side with a rhythmic nod—a signature style of Dev Anand, his charm, mannerisms, and attire—hats, scarves, and a propensity for buttoning his shirt up to his neck—embodied the romanticism of the middle class and helped him forge his distinct identity between Dilip Kumar, the intense tragedy king, and Raj Kapoor, the tram!

Dev Anand was the first muffler man and was inseparable from his signature accessory, whether the cameras were rolling or not. This is another unique piece of clothing he promoted.

Dev Anand's sense of style extended beyond clothing. It was, in a way, a declaration of attitude intended to go against the law.

He was the first fashion experimenter in Bollywood and dared men to value their uniqueness!

In this song, Suchitra Sen, Bengal's most adorable heroine, attempts to replicate Dev Anand's mannerisms. If we observe her closely, we can see her admiration for this actor when she is performing with him.

Love, lust, and then the best that a person could muster when faced with rejection!

One of Dev Anand's most acclaimed films, and he absolutely lived in that character.

Lizzie, this is one of the best tribute threads so far presented for an actor in the India forums. smiley32

Beautifully written, your choice of songs brought a spark to the thread. I never heard that these two legends are close friends.

It was there that he met & befriended Guru Dutt in the famous laundry exchange incident (their shirts got exchanged in the laundry and they ended up wearing the other’s shirt), and they made a promise to help each other out - Dev would give Guru Dutt a break as director if he became successful as a hero, and Guru Dutt would cast Dev in his film if he ever turned producer. They both fulfilled their promise with Baazi (1951) and C.I.D. (1956) respectively.

Here is a beautiful song from C.I.D.

Song: Akhon Hi Ankhon Me Ishara

Movie CID

Singers :Mohd Rafi and Geeta Dutt.

Lyrics by Jan Nisar Akhtar

Music by O.P. Nayyar.

Singers: Mohd Rafi and Geeta Dutt.

Thank you, Madhu! It helps that my father got me into Classic films and ever since I watched my first Dev B&W film, I was hooked! smiley9

Yeah that story about Dev and Guru Dutt is often told. You should watch this episode of Classic Legends on Dev Anand.

Also, this candid interview with Simi Garewal. She really draws him out in this one.
