Din dhal jaye - Guide (1966) - S.D. Burman/ Shailendra/ Mohammed Rafi

Guide is such an exemplary soundtrack it's hard to pick favorites. But apart from the title song (wahan kaun hai tera), if I had to absolutely pick one, it would be this one. There is so much regret in Rafi's voice.

Ek ghar banoonga - Tere ghar ke saamne (1963)/ S.D. Burman/Hasrat Jaipuri/ Rafi-Lata

The picturization of this is as delightful as the movie. Rakesh (Dev Anand) is an architect who unwittingly ends up agreeing to build two houses on two adjoining plots that belong to arch enemies, one of them being his own father and the other, the father of the girl, Sulekha (Nutan) that he's fallen in love with. It's a really fun movie with Rakesh wooing Sulekha and she being unable to resist his charms Embarrassed and then her horror at discovering that he's the son of the buddhha, khoosat old man who her father hates! LOL While Rakesh's father (Om Prakash) thinks that Rakesh has charmed some Rajkumari and Sulekha's father (Harindranath Chattopadhyay) adores Rakesh but has no idea who his dad is!

The dialogue is delightful and witty and I love how understated the performances are except at the end where it all goes over-the-top melodramatic. Still, it's a fun movie and this is a fun song!

Rakesh vows to build the house opposite hers and Sulekha appears in his whisky glass telling him it won't be easy! I love the part where Rakesh's assistant (played by Rashid Khan) drops an ice cube into the glass and seeing Sulekha shiver, Rakesh gives him an angry look and proceeds to remove it and thrusts it in his mouth!WinkLOL Goldie Anand's talent is so evident in this.

The last antara sums up the dilemma so well. I absolutely love the picturisation of this song. The accidental touch on the banister only reeks of separation.

My favourite song from GUIDE would be Tere Mere Sapne.

This is quite a well-analyzed article on what makes Guide such a classic and how it would be impossible to make a Guide in these times.

I loved well-researched articles written by folks who understand the subject well. A few years ago, HT had published an ill informed article written by a woman who didn't quite understand the film.

This also made me emotional because I can relate. My dad loved Dev Anand, even modelled himself on him, his younger photos were so reminiscent of Dev’s style but his favorite Dev film was Hum Dono. I remember watching it with him on TV. So that movie will always remain special to me smiley27 And Jewel Thief. Cos it’s the first ever film I watched of Dev’s at a neighbourhood screening where they got a big screen projector and we brought our own seats (stools or chairs or blankets from home). I was completely in awe.
