It's been two weeks since Mrs. Tendulkar started. I thought why not a review of the 10 episodes seen so far.
The serial started in a very promising manner, after whetting our curiosity with the promo introducing various characters. But after the second episode, it sort of went downhill. While the Tendulkar family life itself is interesting, what with Suhas claiming he doesn't make a dish/recipe twice, being forgetful and his experiences juggling housework with mischievious kids and scripting-writing. The kids are there just to support the claim of house-husband, they don't have much to do. Vibhavari's role is that of a supportive wife, who goes to work in a bank, she hasn't been shown doing anything around the house (maybe like the husbands who don't do housework because they've returned from office). She takes the husband's side when the kids complain about Suhas' cooking or activities, but that's all. I liked that they've shown that they have husband-wife time where they've discussed their day & helped with each other's problems.
But then this family is shown only 20% of the episode, the rest is taken up by their juvenile padosies & colleagues. Hats Off productions have, as someone pointed out, well-written and rounded women characters. Alas, we can't say that same is true of this serial. The society women are not only a gossipy & interfering lot, they're also mean, vicious & extremely insulting. Just because the Tendulkar family doesn't conform to their ways, they went out of their way to insult & humiliate Suhas, the house-husband. They seem to have forgotten the fact that it was his decision to stay at home & take care of house & children. It was not because he's not getting a job. Even if he opts not to work & let his wife work for their daily needs, who are they to say anything! It's none of their business. In real life, presenting a sari to a man would be tantamount to a major insult! π‘
The husbands are the worst I've seen in recent times. Not only are they lazy & worthless, but they're totally dominated by their wives. What a contradiction. Vibhavari may be working outside but still she's shown to be a bharatiya nari who is neither dominated not dominating but who walks beside her husband. The society husbands show others that they dominate their wives, but the reality is actually opposite. They were shown to be typical MCP when introduced to their new manager, but then nothing could have been more juvenile than their plot to leave early when asked to stop for a meeting π€’
Personally, I must say I'm disappointed by the way the story is going. Maybe I've been spoiled by the earlier well-scripted Hats Off shows with their interesting storytelling. Maybe Hats Off team has bitten off more than they can chew by going in for a multiple-family plot.
I'm going to give this serial a couple more weeks. If it becomes better after the dithering start, good otherwise I wash my hands off it & wait for a better show from the production house π
