Ekta Kapoor: Everybody in this world has had a one-sided love story

Ekta Kapoor's set to dish out an impactful love story to her audiences. As her new show Meri Aashiqui Tum Se Hi launches tonight at 10 on Colors (it will air Monday to Friday) she talks about unspoken, one-sided love and the anguish it brings along. Excerpts:

How did you come up with this concept?
I have seen a lot of one-sided love stories. In fact, I think everybody in this world has had a one-sided love story. This show is from a man's point of view " it's about how he (Ranveer) loves this girl (Ishaani) very much, but she is totally unaware of it. He belongs to the have-nots, even though he has been brought up around this rich family. But this is not a poor boy-rich girl kind of a story.

Would you say cases of unreciprocated love happen more when there is economic disparity between two people?
No, it's generic. I may have gone through it, you may have been through it.

So, have you? Ha..ha.. that's way too personal. I went through it when I was very young and the pain was immense. Today, of course, my friends and I find it stupid and laugh about it. I don't even know where he is now.

How did you zero in on Shakti Arora and Radhika Madan to play the lead pair?
We postponed the show by a few months, because I couldn't find the right actor.I needed somebody with a lot of depth. There are many layers to this character; he is friendly, upbeat, constantly talking but at the same time, there is a lot of angst in him, there's a dark side. Today, there are many boys, glorified as good-looking, who think spending hours in the gym and focussing on appearance is what's required to become an actor. But an actor's eyes have to speak, something that they just can't do. It's only depth in an actor's performance that can make him connect with the audience.

Actress Gauri Pradhan-Tejwani, who is returning to TV after many years, plays Ishaani's mother.
In the show, Gauri is this classically gorgeous woman whose husband is madly in love with her. But she is very practical, because she was dumped by somebody years ago. She wants her daughter to make the right choice when it comes to marriage. We have created some strong characters in the show and every actor has been carefully chosen.

Given that your shows are closer to reality, have you left the over-the-top drama far behind?
Actually, I'd say they are more slice-of-life. But it all depends on the topic; if the subject demands over-the-top drama, it will be there. I am making different kinds of shows.

2014 is your big year in terms of TV with many new shows lined up...
At one point, I was busy setting up my film company. But now, it's well set and I have conveyed to them that I'm only going to concentrate on TV for the next six months.
