Every April 22, the world unites to celebrate Earth Day, a crucial time to reflect on the footprint we leave on our planet. This day represents a unique opportunity to mobilize individuals, communities, governments and companies globally, with the aim of raising public awareness of the importance of protecting the biodiversity of our fragile ecosystem.
This year’s theme “Planet vs Plastic” puts us before the fact that we live immersed in plastic which today can almost be considered as our external environment. Not to mention that plastic is now inside the human body and in every natural ecosystem.
In particular, World Earth Day 2024 aims to put an end to the excessive spread of plastic that causes damage to human and planetary health, calling for a 60% reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040.
60 x 40 becomes the figure symbol of World Earth Day 2024: reduce plastic production by 60% by 40, i.e. by the year 2040.
To achieve this ambitious final goal and build a plastic-free future for future generations, there are intermediate and concrete goals to achieve.
- promote widespread awareness and adequate disclosure of the damage caused by plastic to human and animal health and to all biodiversity.
-Rapidly eliminate all single-use plastics by 2030
- call for an end to “fast fashion” in the world, the largest producer of plastic that ends up in landfills, soil and water
-invest in innovative technologies and materials to build a world without plastic.
Here are some small daily gestures that we can do to safeguard the Planet.
1. Reduce water waste
The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater there will be. Taking a shorter shower, turning off the tap while brushing your teeth and fixing any leaks are just some of the ways to save water.
2. Use the car less
Fuel emissions from a vehicle can heavily pollute the air. When possible, use public transport or, if distances allow it, use the bicycle or walk.
3. Save electricity
Purchase class A appliances, unplug unused appliances, turn off the light every time you leave a room and use energy saving light bulbs.
4. Reduce the consumption of meat and fish
Intensive farming has a significant impact on the environment. A varied diet, composed of fruit, vegetables and plant proteins is good for our body and at the same time for the Earth.
5- Use less paper
Although the use of paper is significantly reduced with the digitalisation, this is not enough. Use recycled paper and not stamp unnecessary documents.
6- Create your own garden
Plants and trees provide food and oxygen, can purify the air and fight climate change. By growing fresh food right in your backyard, you would consume fresh food and reduce the use of fuel you would use to go to the market.
7. Use of organic products
The harmful chemicals found in most cleaning products are not only harmful to the environment, but also to your health. It is recommended to use cleaning products that are more natural and organic
Earth Day reminds us that every action we take, no matter how small it may seem, has an impact on our planet. This day is an opportunity to remember to be sustainable... even in the remaining 364 days of the year!
