Disclaimer: As expected Siddharth T and Utkarsh Nathani distorted the original story of Mahakali from the most famous and revered " Devi Mahatmyam" that is very special to all of us due to its sanity and purity ,that is taken resort to when we are in troubles and that is chanted and recited during Nava Ratri festival .
I would like to refresh my memory since I have to cope up with the attack of Utkarsh Nathani on our most revered, and worshipped Goddess Mahakali. Yes. I feel I want to again memorise what was described in Devi mahatmyam, the authentic and holy book whose origin traces back to the oldest manuscript available on it,fortunately for us. A journey through the book as ever is a bliss and I cherish it so much.
In brief this is how Mahakali arrived from Devi Parvati when gods requested her, prayed for her grace . They faced the threat of demons from which Mata Sakti only can relieve them.
Unlike what was shown in the show Sakti did not need a reminder of her powers, not even from Mahadev.
I consider myself gratified if atleast some good hearted people understand how much damage is caused by such writers and makers of shows like this.
Kali may be understood to represent or "aspect" the darker, lethal and transformative qualities of Devi's power or Shakti.
Kali's emergence is chronicled in the third story of the Devi Mahatmya. Kali emerges from Devi's eyebrows as a burst of psychic energy. Kali overpowers and beheads Chanda and Munda, and when she delivers their severed heads to Devi, she is dubbed Chamunda.
During a fierce battle in which the Great Goddess demonstrates her omnipotence by defeating powerful demons who terrify the devas, she encounters the fierce Raktabija (chapter 8). Every drop of blood Raktabija sheds transforms into another demon as it touches the earth. A unique strategy has to be devised to vanquish him. A fiery burst of energy emerging from Devi's third eye takes the dark skeletal form of goddess Kali. With her huge mouth and enormous tongue she ferociously laps up Raktabija's blood, thus preventing the uprising of further demons.
The story continues in which Devi, Kali and a group of Matrikas destroy the demonic brothers Sumbha and NisumbhaIn the final battle against Shumbha, Devi absorbs Kali and the matrikas and stands alone for the final battle.
Note: I am quoting the sanskrit verses where ever I can so that those who read the original in source language would find it easy to trace the parts.
Jai Mata Adi Sakti.
Jai Ved Vyas.
