Shalya, who was he?
King Shalya was the brother of Madri (mother of Nakula and Sahadeva), as well as the ruler of Madra-desa or the kingdom of Madra. Thus, he was the maternal uncle of Nakula and Sahadeva and was loved and revered by the Pandavas.
How Shalya came to the Duriyodhana side?
The Pandavas had counted on Shalya joining their side with his huge army. On the way to assist the Pandavas in the Kurukshetra War, Shalya was tricked by Duryodhana, who arranged a huge feast for Shalya and his men. When Shalya was impressed by the hospitality of his host who he mistakenly thought to be Yudhisthira, he offered to be at his host's service. Unable to turn down Duryodhana's request to join the Kauravas, Shalya met Yudhisthira and apologized for his mistake. Yudhishtira, knowing that Shalya was a great charioteer and forecasting that Shalya would someday be asked to be the charioteer of Karna, extracted a vow from Shalya to the effect that Shalya will demoralise Karna and dampen his spirits. Shalya assured the Pandavas that he would do everything possible to demoralise Karna and dampen his spirits.
Why Shalya over ride the rule by leaving karna all alone in krukshetra war?
Shalya discharged his duty of chariator since he was more or less equal to Krishna. we should appreciate the character of shalya who was a king and accepted the post of chariator to karna forgetting his personal characters in his royal rule.He also gave fruitful suggestions to karna to aim the nagastra to heart which reveals his experience and sinceority over duriyodhana side.when karna too not gave weight to the words of shalya shows his confidence over aiming the weapon though it failed by the action of Krishna..
As i already stated Shalya did his duties sincerely to Duriyodhana side by riding the chariot to Karna on the 17th day of War against Arjuna. Yes, at the time of using the Nagasthiram Salya sincerely adviced Karna to aim for the Chest of Arjuna saying that the Chariot riders have lot of tricks with them and they will press the chariot to escape from the attack of asthira. But the head weight Karna insulted Salya stating a rider has to do the riders job only and should not advice the warrior and proceeded with aiming for the head of Arjuna.
As correctly pointed out by Salya the Nagasthiram attacked only the Crown of Arjuna as Lord Krishna the Rider on the other side has pressed the Chariot by one foot in the ground. Had Karna listened the words of Salya, the long felt desire of Karna, the killing of Arjuna would have come to true.Shalya by situations became a charioteer but he was a king and the kings quality of power not gone from him since he was not acted a mere charioteer, but a guide.
Shalya assured the Pandavas that he would do everything possible to demoralise Karna and dampen his spirits.Utilizing the opportunity of karna's disobeyal of his instructions, shalya left karna but he took over the leadership of army on the 18th day of Krukshetra war.
