Oh, thank you, Mac! You're the second to have done this to me, after Abhi. I wonder how Karna would react - as it is, he was used to people insulting him on basis of caste, but suddenly, if people start calling him a woman, how would he feel? You do know that Vrisha was Karna's name, right? πŸ˜†

Sorry for replying late, btw Vrish Da many girls in IF keeps guy's name, for its like chanting your ideal's name whenever you log in to the IFπŸ˜†
But Vrish Da I think your username is for 2 main reasons:-

1). You knew that one day in future you will open Vrisha's AT πŸ˜‰πŸ˜† for his devotees
2) Then you will have fun by thinking you make the female members of the AT add vaiya after name of their Arya😭

[1] Most authors usually have it that Drona rejected Karna as a pupil, and that sent him to Parashurama. However, in the KM Ganguly translation of the Mahabharata, in Shanti Parva, Narada narrates to a grieving Yudisthir the story of Karna, and there, it's mentioned that Karna actually did learn his arts from Drona. It was only after Drona refused to teach him the Brahma weapon (more likely the Brahmashira) that Karna approached Parashurama.

This also explains why Karna participated in the gurudakshina campaign of the Kuru princes against Drupada

My grandpa read Vyas Dev Ji Mahabharat in Sanskrit

He said KM Ganguly made some variations in his translation, the above mentioned part is one among these, there is another I found in the first page

In Vyas Dev Ji Mahabharat, Arjuna killed Karna from back and Arjuna did not cut Karna's head, Karna was alive for few moments after the deathly arrow attacked him from back. Then he seek the moksh from God

Nice suggestion. Done - check out pg 2 again 😊

KMG makes that assertion in 2 places, and a logical rendering makes it valid in a 3rd. I'll list them below; I'm not providing the links, but in Mahabharataonline.com, one can go to the referenced Parvas and check (yeah, I know, the Roman enumeration of chapters are annoying):

"Vaisampayana continued, 'Hearing these words, the Kuru princes remained silent. But Arjuna, O king, vowed to accomplish it whatever it was. Drona then cheerfully clasped Arjuna to his bosom and took the scent of his head repeatedly, shedding tears of joy all the while. Then Drona endued with great prowess taught the sons of Pandu (the use of) many weapons both celestial and human. And, O bull of the Bharata race, many other princes also flocked to that best of Brahmanas for instruction in arms. The Vrishnis and the Andhakas, and princes from various lands, and the (adopted) son of Radha of the Suta caste, (Karna), all became pupils of Drona. But of them all, the Suta child Karna, from jealousy, frequently defied Arjuna, and supported by Duryodhana, used to disregard the Pandavas. Arjuna, however, from devotion to the science of arms, always stayed by the side of his preceptor, and in skill, strength of arms, and perseverance, excelled all (his class-fellows). Indeed, although the instruction the preceptor gave, was the same in the case of all, yet in lightness and skill Arjuna became the foremost of all his fellow-pupils. And Drona was convinced that none of his pupils would (at any time) be able to be equal to that son of Indra.

Endued with great energy, that child came to have the status of a Suta. He subsequently acquired the science of weapons from the preceptor (Drona), that foremost descendant of Angirasa's race. Thinking of the might of Bhimasena, the quickness of Arjuna in the use of weapons, the intelligence of thyself, O king, the humility of the twins, the friendship, from earliest years, between Vasudeva and the wielder of Gandiva, and the affection of the people for you all, that young man burnt with envy. In early age he made friends with king Duryodhana, led by an accident and his own nature and the hate he bore towards you all. Beholding that Dhananjaya was superior to every one in the science of weapons, Karna. one day approached Drona in private and said these words unto him, 'I desire to be acquainted with the Brahmaweapon, with all its mantras and the power of withdrawing it, for I desire to fight Arjuna. Without doubt, the affection thou bearest to every one of thy pupils is equal to what thou bearest to thy own son. I pray that all the masters of the science of weapons may, through thy grace, regard me as one accomplished in weapons!' Thus addressed by him, Drona, from partiality for Phalguna, as also from his knowledge of the wickedness of Karna, said, 'None but a Brahmana, who has duly observed all vows, should be acquainted with the Brahma weapon, or a Kshatriya that has practised austere penances, and no other.' When Drona had answered thus, Karna, having worshipped him, obtained his leave, and proceeded without delay to Rama then residing on the Mahendra mountains.

And careering over the field of battle like a fiery wheel, king Drupada with his arrows smote Duryodhana and Vikarna and even the mighty Karna and many other heroic princes and numberless warriors, and slaked their thirst for battle. Then all the citizens showered upon the Kurus various missiles like clouds showering rain-drops upon the earth. Young and old, they all rushed to battle, assailing the Kurus with vigour.

The first 2 are also reasons why Karna did participate in the gurudakshina campaign against Drupada alongside Duryodhan. In this serial, they logically followed that since Karna wasn't Drona's pupil, he didn't participate in the gurudakshina either.

The Shanti Parva citation above explains why Karna became a disciple of Parashurama. Drona had taught first Arjun, and then Ashwatthama, the Brahma weapon - undoubtedly the Brahmashira (the same weapon that Ashwatthama used against Uttara). This was the weapon denied to Karna on the basis of his caste, and why Karna approached Parashurama.
I don't disbelieve your grandfather, but when Karna being Drona's pupil is borne out by at least 3 references in the epic, all scattered, it's worth considering. Particularly when the epic sometimes falls short of consistency while describing the same events in different places.

On the part about Karna's head being cut off, I've changed that on pg 1 to say that the Anjalika 'slew him'. Meaning killed. Does your Vyasa reference say that a different weapon was used?

Hey Kat.. Am here.. tell me.. how was last two days πŸ˜›

What I read is also that Karna did learn from Drona part of his education. I have not yet reached the post war sections. But when Karna promises to Duryodhan that he will defeat Arjuna, he says that 'with the help of his knowledge acquired from Drona and Parashurama, I will defeat Arjuna'.. am reading a Tamil condensed version so I dont think KMG is wrong atleast here..
