Star Plus Mahabharat - Review
[To set reminder and check TV schedule of Mahabharat click here..]
Star Plus has indeed taken a great challenge for itself with its new Mega Show Mahabharat. The channel has given it a prime time slot to upbeat the TRPs. Hmmm... Huge risk but I think it will work. I know there are many who are arguing about the new Mahabharat being over styled and low on story line.
But tell me one thing if they recreate the exact BR Chopra Mahabharat with same effects and old treatment of characters in original look, would you like to watch it?? In this new age of technology and feel good things on TV, why should not they portray this serial in a new avatar?
The first episode was decent enough, the show is visually appealing with high use of VFX, and the characters looked beautiful in their glamorous costumes. The set designs and music is up to the mark for current generation. Of course the acting talent of these actors need to be polished more and I am sure it will happen as the story progresses and they start to live and breathe in their characters.
This mega show has definitely raised the bar of visual delight with its roaring budget of 120 crores. Yes that is right! With Bollywood movies ganging together in 100 crore club, our small screen is not far behind. This show has proved that though medium of entertainment is small but the quality is huge. This mega show had started a new stir of promotions ever attempted by any GEC, the makers have made a good effort to reach out to the younger audiences through various marketing strategies on social media platforms along with the traditional ones.
Talking about the time slot then Mahabharat would come on Star Plus on weekdays at 8.30 PM. This has been decided after much consideration. The earlier show time will ensure that Mahabharat will not clash with known crowd pullers such as Sony's Kaun Banega Crorepati (which comes on Friday-Sunday at 8.30 PM) and Big Boss on Colors(weekdays 9 PM). This is also a noticeable shift from Star Network's Satyamev Jayate, which by coming at 11 AM on Sunday mornings had tried to rekindle that dying time slot. It is assuredly a clever idea to air it at 8.30 PM to gain momentum.
While the first Mahabharat by BR Chopra which we all grew up watching was rich in content and showed almost exactly what was written in the epic. I hope that the creative team strictly follow the basic story line and don't over dramatize something just for the heck of TRPs. If they do this then I am sure audiences will whole heartedly welcome this serial.
As of now, I would like to give it 3 out of 5 rating. Old Mahabharat will remain the benchmark and no one can recreate the same thing hence give the new Mahabharat a chance to prove its worth and stop comparing the two. That era was different than this. Tell us what you expect from this show? Do you like the new Mahabharat?
