Mumbai:Eijaz Khan talks about his new TV show, the lessons he has taken from television so far and why he isn't ready to settle down just yet.
What made you grab the role in Laut Aao Trisha?
I play a tough cop who has an important case to solve. I could relate to certain qualities of the character, such as being authoritarian. In a female-dominated medium such as television, it is difficult to come by a strong male character such as this, so I grabbed it instantly.
Do you get bored of a project easily?
Yes. For me mediocrity is a crime. If it gets monotonous, I quickly detach myself from the project.
Is there pressure from family to settle down?
We are from a broken family, so I am only answerable to my father and then myself. My father is a self-made man. Like me, he also left his home at an early age but completed his education, so he understands me. Marriage is like taking a plunge you have to hit rock bottom at some point.
Tell us a little about your girlfriend Natalie. How did you two meet?
We met four years ago at the airport when we were both coming back from Canada. She had dropped her passport and I returned it to her. She is a very talented soprano singer and shuttles between India and Canada. I have met her family and know them very well now. They're quite conservative. The first time I was in Canada for Christmas, her grandfather didn't allow me to sit next to her. The next year when I went, he did.
What has the industry taught you in this last 10 years?
The industry has taught me to not speak my mind in public. The last time I did so, it cost me very dearly.
