MY POSSESSIONS

SCENT OF A WOMAN

In the first of our series on TV stars' collections, BT meets Karishma Tanna and wafts through her unique collection of perfumes

RESHMA S KULKARNI

Aself confessed perfume-freak, Karishma got hooked on to making this collection around five years back. "Every girl has her stock of bags, belts, shoes, etc. Similar was the case with me. I had this small treasure trove of mine, which began burgeoning after I became an actor. It was due to professional needs that I began purchasing more and more of these things, so much so that I now own some hundred pairs of shoes and an equal number of belts. But perfumes are something that I always had a weakness for; so, their collection increased not only due to professional needs but also out of choice," says Karishma, who currently has a whopping more than 125 brands of perfumes in her closet!
Although Karishma likes to experiment with various fragrances, her favourites are the aqua and the floral kinds. She's not much into the typical feminine ones but instead prefers to wear those perfumes meant for men, "But they shouldn't be overpowering. There has to be a fine difference between the too sweet and the too heady kind of scents," she elaborates like a true connoisseur. Karishma has many favourites that she rattles off.
Karishma points out that to bring out the best effect of a perfume, some basic rules need to be followed. Firstly, just as there are particular outfits to be worn on particular occasions, same is the case with perfumes. For e.g, an aqua fragrance works best for an evening out whereas a mild woody or floral one works wonders during a quiet dinner. Secondly, as regards to the application, she says, perfumes should always be applied on pulse points; they should be sprayed on from a distance and should never be sprayed directly in the armpits as it results in blackening of the skin.
Karishma also makes it a point to stay away from anti-perspirants, as she believes it blocks the pores of the skin, thus harming it in the process.
"Choosing the right perfume and applying it correctly enables one to savour it to the max and gets you hooked on to it for a lifetime," the perfume freak signs off.
