Overnight, the world turned upside down for the innocent on both sides. The place they were born in, the place that was HOME, suddenly felt alien and dangerous. Tough decisions had to be made for survival, even if it meant never knowing who lived or died. Material assets did not matter anymore. Irrespective of which side of the religious affiliation or the lines drawn, EVERY single person living in that era has indeed suffered the trauma of having to lose friends, family and loved ones in this tragedy!
The irony is that the happiest day of millions ~ especially those fighting TOGETHER side-by-side with all their heart to free OUR country from the bondage of slavery, became a scar that continues to haunt them for a lifetime because of this divide. Who was right? Who was wrong? Depending on where we live and religious affiliations, we have been fed many interpretations of who sparked it off, but what we ALL agree on is that the spirit of brotherhood and humanity got drowned in the Raavi river.
Those who survived this tragedy never really LIVED again, because something inside them had already died and they were now strangers in a new land where they had to start from the bottom and figure out how to reconcile their MEMORIES to REALITY. What I truly salute is that those who did manage to live through the era, then built their country from the ruins and destruction that was left, and continued to live long enough to give us a glimpse of the brutal reality of TRUE overnight heroes! Let us NOT ignore that millions were forced to choose a side on lines of religion, they were forced to move for survival, they were forced to HATE the other because of extremists, and continue to do so till today!
KUDCA, honestly, has played with this dice a lil bit. Mogar-Brij-Bhanu are Hindus and not exactly angels, whereas Vashma-Abdul-Zara-Dr Baig are Muslims without humanity bias. Indian shows do portray the dualism between religions as light and dark, completely accept that claim. Moreover, countless other shows made on the other side show the other religions in a non-appealing light as well. The truth of the Partition has led us to take sides. But those who conducted such brutalities had NO religion; their version of HUMANITY had long become tainted with an obsession; because none of our religions or holy books promotes the language of HATE ~ Abrar/Faruq somewhat fall there in the purview of this show. They do NOT represent ANY religion, they are representatives of a THOUGHT that took precedence over everything else in that era.
Sorry for the rant. I've just been thinking very deeply about this for a while.
