Nidhi was sitting with her fellow interns and was keen to plan for the new year celebrations in the hospital. But as this was her first new year after joining the hospital, she was waiting for someone else to initiate the discussions. But when she saw no one even talking about the upcoming new years eve just two days later...she decided to speak up as she was finding it so awkward as everyone in the hospital was so silent and there wasn't even a word being spoken about such an important occasion.
Nidhi: aap sab ka new years eve ka kya plan hai?
Everyone was shocked to see someone talking about new year celebration in this hospital.
One colleague: kya aapko pata nahi? Yahan aisi baatein karna bilkul mana hai...
Nidhi: aisa kyun ?
Other colleague: wo isliye kyunki humare Dean Dr Ashutosh ko party ya celebration ke naam se allergy hai... aap yahan nayi hain isliye aapko nahi pata shayad...par yahan koi bhi celebration nahi hota..
Nidhi was shocked to know this... although she knew about the strictness and the discipline which Dr Ashutosh had been maintaining everywhere in the hospital...but sometimes there should be exceptions to all the rules. New year is one such occasion when everyone deserves the right to celebrate and be happy. But despite her attempt to convince the others for planning some sort of celebration...no one agreed to participate in her plan as they were really scared of his anger. Nidhi decided that she too would cancel her plans as no one was ready to support her. She prayed to God to help her with a chance to do something special for the patients and the staff at the hospital who were missing out on a chance to welcome the new year with smiles and happiness. But with no help from anywhere, she retreated back to her work.
While she was going back home after her shift the next morning, she overheard Dr Ashutosh instructing his assistant that he should get all the necessary papers signed before the 1st of January as he was supposed to leave for a conference that morning itself. Nidhi was too excited to hear this and she immediately went back to the staff room to inform everyone that Dr Ashutosh won't be there in the hospital on the 1st of January and they could plan some small party on that day. Everyone was scared of the fact that if he came to know that they had organised a get together in the hospital...he would be really furious and they would have to face the consequences. But Nidhi assured them that she would manage everything and he won't come to know anything. They would just have a cake cutting ceremony and snacks and sweets distribution...and nothing more. Everyone agreed to her plan but everyone was still worried.
The new year had started and Nidhi had arranged cake, sweets and snacks for everyone... the junior staff had decorated their staff room and as Dean had already left... everyone was relieved that he won't be coming now. Little did they know that the storm was on its way for them. Everyone was enjoying the party and the patients and their attendants also were very happy as this was something very unique that was happening here. Nidhi was very happy to see everyones smiling faces and there were few children who were also admitted to the hospital. They came upto Nidhi and invited her for a dance with them as she really got along well with the kids. She couldn't refuse to the request of those kids and she joined them for dance. Everyone was clapping and some more joined them in their dance when suddenly everyone was shocked to see Dr Ashutosh stand right there in front of them (his flight had been cancelled bcoz of the fog so he came back to the hospital). There was a pin drop silence in the hospital and everyone stood there like a statue. Nidhi felt as if her breath stuck in her throat when she saw him...mar gaye aaj to... She thought. She gathered her courage and went upto him with a piece of cake in her hands.
Ashutosh: to yeh sab aap ne kiya hai Dr Nidhi? Aap hi hain jo yahan nayi hain...aur koi nahi hai jo yeh sab kare...wo bhi meri marzi ke khilaaf... Am I right?
She stood still with cake in her hands... her hands trembling a bit...
Ashutosh: don't you know that when I'm asking you something you need to give me an answer? (he shouted)
Nidhi: Sir...Sir ...wo ...wo main...maine...
Ashutosh: I need an answer Dr Nidhi... aap mere office mein aakar mujhe answer dengi ki aapne aisa kyun kiya... Aur agar aapke paas koi valid answer nahi hai to aap apna suspension letter meri table se lekar jaa sakti hain... am I clear?
Nidhi: ye...yes Sir...
Today a girl like Nidhi who never found it difficult to give any answer in the past...she just couldn't speak up in front of his furious looks... everyone along with her was spellbound and those kids started crying seeing everything happening there. Nidhi saw them crying and their tears gave her strength to speak in front of this stone hearted person. She wont let these kids cry on the first day of the year when they were already suffering from their illness. She asked them to calm down and assured them that she'll handle everything and they need not worry. She went inside his office and stood there in front of him.
Ashutosh: aap ne jawab nahi diya aap ne yeh sab kyun kiya?
Nidhi: wo maine yeh isliye kiya kyunki mujhe lagta hai ki har insaan ko naya saal celebrate karne ka haq hai...in patients aur yahan ke staff ko kyun nahi?
Ashutosh was angry to hear her answer and asked her who gave her the right to decide what would happen in the hospital?
Nidhi: yeh to har kisi ka right hai na... agar hum sab ne mil kar thoda smile kar liya to usme galat kya hai?
Ashutosh: galat aapke smile karne mein nahi hai Dr Nidhi... Galat hai in sab patients ki health ko risk karne mein... aap ne ek baar bhi socha ki in sab ko aap yeh cakes...sweets dengi... to inki health affect ho sakti hai... jitna time aapne celebrate kiya utni der poora staff apni responsibilities bhool gaya tha... is sab ki responsibility aap lene ko tayaar hain...? Agar kuchh ho jaata to kya aap smile karke us problem ko handle kar sakti thi... agar kisi patient ki health deteriorate ho jaati...tab kya aap khud ko maaf kar paati? Jawab dijiye mujhe...
Nidhi: nahi Sir...main yeh sab nahi kar paati... par maine to yehi socha tha ki in sab ko wo chhoti si khushiyan de paaun...jo inse door hain... kyunki yeh apne parivaar se door hospital mein admit hain... wo thodi der ke liye hi sahi...apni beemari ko... apne dukh ko bhool gaye the... main to bas yeh hi chahti thi Sir...
Nidhi went close to the glass window and showed him outside...
Nidhi: yahan aaiye Sir...wo dekhiye... yeh sab log bahar isliye chup hain...dukhi hain...kyun ki wo sab aap se darte hain... aur wo aap ke gusse ko face nahi karna chahte... jab main unke saath thi... to mujhe laga... jaise wo sab aap ko dua de rahe the...kyun ki aap ke hospital mein inhe ilaaj ke saath saath pyar bhi mila... in duaaon ki koi keemat nahi hoti Sir...yeh to anmol hoti hain... aaj hum sab ne thoda sa discipline ke badle bahut saari duaayen mili hain... hai na.. dekhiye na Sir...
Ashutosh saw the people standing outside and somehow her words touched the right chords in his heart and he stood there quietly... He couldn't say anything after that... Nidhi kept on standing there waiting for his response but somehow he was in a state of trance... in these years no one ever dared to speak like this in front of him and when today she did... He couldn't refute the fact that whatever she said... Somewhere he knew was right. He was brought out of his thoughts by Nidhi when she asked him whether she needs to pick up her suspension letter. He looked at her and for few seconds wasn't able to say anything. He later just asked her to leave from there and she went out. Before leaving the office... She looked behind towards Ashutosh who was still looking out of the window.
Nidhi closed the door behind her and suddenly with the sound of the door opening Ashutosh was brought out of his trance when the assistant informed him that the arrangements for the new year party had been done. He realised that he was lost in the thoughts of his first new year with Nidhi. So much had changed between them and now after 2 years of togetherness ... Again they were not together and he was missing her a lot. How he wished she comes back into his life but he had to respect her decision and will have to bear this pain of separation from his life.
