Chapter Twenty nine...

barsaat ki raat...

THIS UPDATE DEDICATED TO ANJANI..BAWA..BABITA ..N THE TWO SWATIS...

"Rohan..u must have more...lo..try some upma..."it was dr ashutosh serving rohan at breakfast ..till finally Rohan could have no more..n got up to keep his plate..saying"aapka south indian is the best i have ever had..kahaan se"?? And ashutosh smiled"source not to be revealed...however u r invited every sunday breakfast..kyun nidhi"?? And nidhi nodded..:"haan..lekin main hur baar snakes n ladder me haaroongi nahi..aap iss Rohan ke bachche ko chess mei haraaiyega"!! And Rohan teased.."oh nidhiji..Rohan ka bachcha mahi...jab aap dono ke bachche honge to i d tell them ki unki mummy dr banne ke baad bhi ludo aur saanp seedhi khelti thi"!!! And as nidhi threatened to hit him..ashutosh had to stand up to hold her from hitting him!!!

"Thank you sir...itna enjoy shayad zindagi me nahi kiya..."it was Rohan as he shook hands with dr ashutosh n touched baba's feet...and poked his tongue at nidhi!! As he waved n was gone...baba adding"ashu tu ne achcha kiya...bachchon ke aane se bada mann laga...ab main aur nidhi khela karenge ludo..."!! Ashutosh smiled but then turned serious and added"baba...nidhi ko thoda guide kariye MD entrance ke liye..comptt is v tough...aur yeh abhi serious nahi hai..bus do week bache hain..samjhi"!! And nidhi pouted n disappeared. .as dr ashutosh came in shaking his head..in love..and frustration! !

"Mam lunch mei kya banega"?? It was mallika's maid aaking her...as mallika sat in the drawing room...a hand on her eyes..still in her gown...n listening to a heart breaking ghazal..by mehdi hassan

ZINDAGI MEI TO SABHI PYAAR KIYA KARTE HAIN...

MAI TO MARR KE BHI MERI JAAN TUJHE CHAHOOONGA!!

and as she looked up...her blank swollen eyes told the sad story of her lonely night...yes weekends were lonely..no hospital..no work...n not even a glimpse of ashutosh...ashutosh who should have been her's n only her's!! Last night she had wept ..recalling the lovely fun filled times at oxford...years ago...those lovely times when their relationship had blossomed...though ashutosh had always made it clear it was nothing more than friendship. .for mallika it had always been a deep n profound love..love that could have waited forever...but a young intern had come n upset the balance of life...

"Lunch mei..."the maid repeated n dr mallika looked up n said"bus cold salad...aur tum jaao..i want to be alone..aur curtains daal ke lights off kar do..."and as the maid retreated ...mallika looked vacantly..thinking of ashutosh n nidhi...the happy sunday they must be having...n an old number came upon her lips. ..

YEH ANDHERE HUME RAAS AATE HAIN YUN..

INME SAAYA BHI APNA DIKHAAYEE NA DE..

ROSSHNI HO WAHAAN ..TU JAAHAAN BHI RAHE..

HER KHUSHI HO WAHAAN TU JAHAAN BHI RAHE...

and mallika got up to make herself a large peg of vodka...her only companion on weekends...long lonely weekends. ..

"Ufff ho gaya...i have made notes n read all of the paedes syllabus...ab buss 5 topics bache...but ab baad mei.."said a grumpy nidhi...as ashutosh smiled n said"raat ko you should put in a few more hrs..do weeks bache hain buss..."!! Nidhi stood near him..holding his shirt.."raat ko no books...i want to be with you...buss "!! Dr ashutosh cajoled her"come on...dont be adamant..aur mere saath to zindagi bhar hao...bus MD mei aa jao..to career set hai tumhara..aur agar padhogi to i d get coffee for you..fine.."!! Nidhi sighed..as she went into change..they were going for a drive...as she showered...she closed her eyes...n imagined herself carrying a pink baby in her arms...she thought she d have enjoyed much more than studying medico books till past midnight...but dr ashutosh was probably right...n yet nidhi secretly prayed for her pill to fail ..as a dr she knew it couldn't. ..but then...

"Baba..hum aate hain thodi der mein...drive se..."it was nidhi who informed baba..as she gave him tea n rolls ..n he smiled"ja beta...per raat me padhaai"!! And nidhi stamped her feet like a child...as baba laughed!!

"Try the salad n coffee...its v good"!! Said ashutosh as the two sat by the window in coffee shop of Taj Awadh...but nidhi refused"no..mujhe ekdum fried khane ka mann hai...i will have this chopsuey..n haan coffee..."ashutosh let her order for both of them...n looked out...autumn was about to set in...though october..the sky was over cast...it d rain the next day...nidhi held his fingers...he looked at her..n raised his eyebrow. .."what if i dont compete in MD"?? He smiled..."atleast try...i know u would. ..if you try...achcha tell me..when is your jeevan sandhya getting over..."?? Nidhi replied"kal poochoongi..one month is over..i feel maybe a day or two...more"!! Ashutosh nodded..as nidhi said dreamily"aapko ehsaas hai humari shaadi ko ek maheena ho gaya..."!! Dr ashutosh smiled n almost admonished her saying"yes...aur if i would leave it to you...ek aadh maah mei..humaare ghar mei..chaar paanch bachche bhi aa jaayenge..isn't it so"!! He sure could read her mind...couldnt he!!

Nidhi retoryed"but whats the harm...people do have families...dont they"??? Ashutosh sighed..."not at 24...certainly not"!! And as the food arrived..he served her...picking a noodle and inserti g it into her mouth..as if to say"lets change the topic"!!

"Ek conference hone waali hai..simla mei...chalogi.."?? Nidhi seemed all excited but then ashen as she said"kahaan !! Mujhe to MD ki padhaai karni hai..."!! Her husband n dean..controlled his smile n said"dont worry...its after your entrance exam...chalo ab...time to study..."!!

As they drove back...nidhi yawned...n looked at ashutosh...with yearning..as he looked back n said..."tum padhaai karo..i d get you a strong coffee..."!!

""Rangu...i really wish...suno to..."ot was anji trying to talk to her hubby about the course in advanced fashion photography that she had applied for n had an interview the next week..dr ranganath normally a very jovial man..had set ideas about marriage...n as he caressed anji..holdingvher close..after a passionate hour of love making, said"tell me anji...tum mujhe khush nahi rakhna chahti kya...dont you wish to fill this home with laughter..."anji got up..covering herself with a sheet...agitated ..she said"laughter...means babies for you...but i dont think i am ready...i want to study...work...cant babies wait..."?? Ranga looked at her...a lil frustrated as he saod"marriage could also have waited...aur yeh mat bhoolo...ki agar humare parents ne bhi aise socha hpta...tumhari maa ne bhi agar career prefer kiya hota to..u wouldnt have been there..."anji knew this discussion would lead no where...she had already taken her steps...n was secretly on the pill...she jated to keep it a secret...but there was no option...

She sighed...wore her nightie n lay...looking at the overcast sky...and thinking if she had made the correct choice!!

"Aap hospital nahi jaayenge kya aaj"?? Asked nidhi at the breakfast table as ashutosh seemed very relaxed n still in his kurta pyjama..though it was 9 a.m n nidhi was all set to leave..he kept reading the paper n said"thoda der me jaaoonga aaj...tum jaao..dont be late...armaan drop ker dega..."and nidhi nodded "jee...i d ask the manager today...maybe its my last day..tiffin yahaan hai..dont forget...aur suot bed pe hai..aur hankey bhi..aur..."ashutosh looked up.."dont worry...night suit me nahi jaaoonga hospital. .."!! And nidhi pouted..not knowing whether to smile or get angry...as armaan came n said"chal nidhi..drop ker doonga tujhe...bye baba...bye ashu.."and they drove off...

"Nidhi...ashu ke sath adjust ker pa rahi hai na...yaa dikkat hai koi"?? Asked armaan...to which nidhi smiled"koi problem nahi except ki papa beta milke mujhe MD karaa ke hi dum lenge"!! Armaan laughed...as nidhi joined him n added"thanks armaanji..."and armmaan laughed"paagal hai kya...apno ko koi thanx bolta hai kya...ab jaa aa gaya tera jeevan sandhya..."and as he stopped the car...he said"yaad hai nidhi..last year ...jab ashu ne aur maine tujhe dekha tha yahaan pe...road cross karte...ashu poori raat so nahi paaya tha..rocking chair pe baitha raha tha..."nidhi bit her lip...as the sad intensity of dr ashutosh's eyes was still frssh in her heart n mind...

"Dr priyanka...i have explained you everything...and it dhould be done...n now mallika you can come with me on the round"it was dr ashutosh winding up work after meets n surgeries...he put his cell on silent as always during the round and started the detailed round..as mallika gave him the files of each patient of the gen ward n then they took off their footwear...n changed for the icu.

As mallika read out the complicated history..dr ashutosh lisyened carefully n examined the patients...making changes in medicines...wherever necessary...completely absorbed at the job at hand...as always...

**************it was 7.45 when nidhi stepped out of jeevan sandhya..it had been a busy day n bcoz it was her last day...she had spent time chatting with each inmate..promising them she d continue to visit them...n then explained the cases to the new dr dr abhay deol.

As she stepped out..it began to rain...and she stood under a tree for a cab...fifteen minutes passed by...there was no cab..not even an auto in sight...nidhi looked around ..and began to walk..quite sure she would get one at the crossing...

As she reached there...the area seemed strangely desolate...nidhi could spot a cab as she hailed it...the driver stopped n said"madam..aaj strike hai...no taxi ..no bus .

No auto..."nidhi was perplexed...as she sighed n took out her cell...low battery...oh god!! She had forgotten to charge it!! But there was sufficient charge to try dr ashutosh...

Nidhi was exasperated. ..fourteen calls n he wasnt picking even one...till her phone finally beeped dead...n the downpour lashed at her...she was still about 6 km away from home..with no cab or auto in sight...nidhi covered herself with her dupatta n decided to walk the distance...if only she had known..she could have contacted Rohan or Armaanji...but now ..that her famous husband was too busy to take her calls...she had no option but to walk...as she walked...she could sense two men leering n singing...lewd songs...nidhi flushed with anger...

Dr ashutosh got over with the round at 8.45 and ad he wore his coat n looked at his cell...he was shocked to find 14 missed calls from nidhi...what was the matter??? Where was she??? He dialled back..but got the message"tje no.u r trying is out of coverage area'!! Dr ashutosh dialled home..."baba..nidhi ..nidhi aa gayi kya:"?? Baba replied "na beta..intwzaar ker raha hoon..."ashutosh bit his lip...n raced his BMW towards jeevan sandhya...as the rain beat on the windscreen...

Chapter Thirty...

Tum aur hum.. hum aur tum...

Dr Ashutosh drove faster than he could...and reached jeevan sandhya in no time..he parked the car n almost ran in..looking for nidhi..as he entered;he shouted"nidhi...nidhi.."the manager emerged..a lil worried as he saw dr ashutosh ..."manager sahib..where is nidhi...dr nidhi"??the manager shrugged his shoulders helplessly n said"sir..she left about half an hour back...today was her last day..so she was a lil late...abhi tak pahunchi nahi kya "???dr ashutosh shook his head ..as the manager exclaimed"ohho...aaj to public transport strike hai..no bus taxi or auto...kaise gayi hongi..."!!ashutosh looked at the manager.."strike??what strike??matlab no auto or cab would ply"???the manager nodded..."yes sir local paper me tha...tax issues.."ashutosh wasn't even listening...as he was trying to visualise how could nidhi have gone!!strike...that means she was walking...alone ..in this dark n stormy weather...dr ashutosh raced out ...not bothering about the rain...the drizzle that had turned into a heavy down pour...

Nidhi walked fast on the increasingly deserted shahnawaz road...it was nearly 9. .n the weather was stormy...she looked back...two men...rather college boys were they??following her..spreading out their tentacle like arms in the rain...n singing loudly...as nidhi looked around n walked faster...almost running towards the crossing of nishat ganj...she knew she was still far from home...were the boys really dangerous...could she deal with them...nidhi looked over her shoulder...the boys had halted under a tree...n were whistling... nidhi quickened her steps...

*******dr ashutosh reached the crossing...both roads xould lead to home..which one had nidhi taken..he wondered..n then by his gut feeling..took the road that went to the left..Shahnawaz road...

He drove..with the rain beating on the windscreen..and he was barely able to see anything..he passed a couple of road side romeos dancing in the rain...when he turned left...n bit his lip...

The strains of the sufi quawaali fell in his eara...yes the dargaah was right there...maybe nidhi...had sought shelter...

He left the car n dashed in...

The mazaar was desolate...but a few lanterns glowing..and two holy men singing an old quawalli of amir khusrau..dr ashutosh looked around ...a silent prayer escaping his lips...as there was a lightening in the sky...n there as it seemed the light of the lord illuminated the universe

..ashutosh saw his nidhi...huddled up in a corner..her purse n apron thrown near her...yes it was she...

He ran towards her...n held her.."nidhi...kahaan thi tum"???ashutosh froze as he felt her shivering n shuddering in the thunder...he held her...as he helped her stand..taking her purse n apron..n as he looked at her...the holy men sang..

CHAAP TILAK SAB CHEENI

and as there seemed to be a huge cloud burst ashutosh hugged nidhi tight...in front of the mazaar...that had always been a mute witness to their love...

As dr ashutosh drove tje car..he kept a sharp gaze at nidhi..she was not speaking at all...she was drenched to the bone...was she scared??or angry...ashutosh held her hand ...n could feel it tremble...

Baba n kaka were pacing the hall in anxiety as armaan was trying the numbers...but nothing seemed to be getting connected...and just as he banged the phone down...ashutosh's car drove in...as all rushed out...baba asking"ashu...nidhi mili"??dr ashutosh got down...n as he saw nidhi still sitting...he opened the door...n nidhi almost stumbled out...as he just caught her in his arms...her legs trembling..."kya hua ashu...whats wrong"??asked armaan..as baba looked on..."kuch nahi..she s dazed..n probably scared...i d take her in..."and he carried nidhi into the bedroom...and just as he kept her onto the bed...she caught his shirt...n held to him...her teeth clattering crazily...n fingers trembling...Oh!!!it was a panic attack...

Dr ashutosh realised it in a moment..he had feared it...n his fears were coming true...

He held her...they were both dripping wet...she needed to change...he tried to get up to get fresh clothes but she was holding on to him...as if to life...he tried to soothe her..caressing her wet tangled hair..."hey nidhi..lets change...

Aao "and he made her stand...as they entered yhe washroom...and ashutosh peeled the wet clothes away ...n both stood under a hot shower...nidhi still holding him...her clattering of teeth seemed to have reduced...but just as ashutosh offed the shower...he observed streak of blood...oh god!!terrible nose bleeding..ashutosh quickly wrapped her in her gown ..n wore his tracks ...n got her to the bed...throwing a fresh sheet..."nidhi lie...its a panic attack..ur b.p has shot up...just lie down..."nidhi lay but her trembling hands held on to his...as he caressed her softly...repeating comforting words till he could feel the shivers passing away...

He held on...her eyes were closed...but she wasn't asleep...n he could feel her heart thudding across...he ran his hands in her hair...n finally asked"darr gayi thi..toofaan mei...akele"??and nidhi looked up...her eyes a deluge of anger...n fear..."aapko..kitta phone kiya...aapne liya hi nahi..."she hicupped"ku..kuch bhi nahi tha...no cab..no auto..rickshaw bhi nahi...road ekdum sunsaan thi..."ashutosh wanted her to speak out her fears...he knew it will help the bp to come down...he put his finger under her chin n said"i am sorry...nidhi..i really am...i was on the rounds of icu..."!!and nidhi 's teeth clattered again...as ashutosh hugged her..."there were two boys ..mujhe laga they ...they were following me...i ran...pata nahi kaise...mazaar aa gaya..n i entered...buss...aapke intezaar main..i knew aap aayenge..."ashutosh held her tight...feeling angry at himself...n deeply sorry for the unnecessary ordeal that his wife had to undertake...

There was a knock at the door...ashutosh gently distangled himself n went ...it was kaka with coffee n sandwiched...his eyes admonishing ashu"le khila de bechari ko...thand lagi hogi..october aa gaya..."ashu kept quiet...but replied..."baba..kaka..she s ok..panic attack tha..it has passed off..."baba did not reply..but just sat tapping the woodden arm of his rocking chair...something he always did when he was agitated. ...

Nidhi bit into the sandwich...suddenly realising she was famished...she took a big bite n tried to hold the coffee mug..but her husband smiled..holding on to the mug n making her sip..."shhh...gira logi..u d get burnt..."n finally nidhi smiled...as ashutosh breathed a sigh of relief...

"Ashu...kabhi kabhi tere hospital se mai pareshaan ho jata hoon...aaj kuch ho jata to..bata..."??it was baba admonishing dr ashutosh ...as the family sat on the dining table n ashutosh fed nidhi...aloo tamatar n parathe...that she loved...armaan seemed to understand the guilt writ large over his friend's face...n he tried to dispel the clouds by saying"baba..kahin aisa to nahi..ki padhaai se bachne ke liye yeh sab natak kar rahi ho nidhi...i mean ho sakta hai..its possible"!!

And nidhi n ashutosh both broke into a smile...n ashu finally spoke.."i d try to set things right tomorrow...neglect kiya hai maine...kaafi...cheezon ko..."and arman gaped"abe!!cheezon ko..ya nidhi ko"??ashutosh remained silent as he took nidhi into the bedroom..holding her secure by her waist...

As nidhi took her book of surgery..ashutosh looked up..n took it away"so jaao aaj..u r very tired...epistaxis bhi hui hai...ab kal se to ghar pe ho..u can put in more hrs"!!and nidhi pouted ..as she lay...suddenly shuddering again...as her husband enveloped her immiediately again...

"Baba kahaan hain yeh..subah se nahi dikhe"??it was a worried nidhi asking baba...about the where abouts of her missing hubby...just as he entered...carrying ram asrey's kachauri jalebi..."hmmm...naashta "!!and nidhi almost squealed with delight...as baba also smiled "arre waah..yeh to mazaa aa gaya ashu...chal beta"and the family sat for what dr ashutosh announced was BRUNCH..."now no lunch...aur aap do ghante padhaai kariye...main zara kuch kaanm kar ke aata hoon...but get ready by 1..samjhi...aur lao ek jalebi do"!!and nidhi wrinkled her nose...

It was an hr later..having checked her bp...n finding it normal..that dr ashutosh walked out to his car ...in his blue suit...without his stetho...so he was clearly not goung to kgh!!nidhi wondered...as he came back..tapped her shoulder n said"sherlock holmes nahi bano..padhai karo..."!!and he was gone...

Nidhi was explained some finer points by baba...as she finished the topics..n baba said strictly..."ashu is right...u are bright..v bright but padhai pe focus nahi karti"!!nidhi smiled as armaan quipped"ab bechari bachchi...ashu pe focus kare..ya padhai pe"!!

Nidhi's cell rang..it was dr ashutosh..."jee...kahiye..."

"Ready ho..to cab lo aur Hyundai showroom ke paas aa jao..hazrat ganj mei...i am waiting...and yes get ur driving license "nidhi was excited...was he buying her a car???oh she was happy...she always missed her santro...but had never been able to ask him...n obviously she had almost no income of her own..

Nidhi walked out in her yellow n green churidaar kurta..n hailed a cab...thankfully there was no strike today!!

"Bus bhaiya yehi..hyundai showroom ke samne"!!

Nidhi got down n before she could pay...she feltvthe warm hand of her husband on her waist...as he opened his wallet n paid.."chalo..."and he pulled her across the road.."suniye...hyundai is here..."but was he even bothered! !

Nidhi found herself standing in the MERCEDEZ show room..remembering how she n Rohan used to window shop right from the time it had opened...dr ashutosh shook her out of the stupor as he asked"do u like this model...red ya silver"??nidhi was speechless...as the manager suggested "sir go for the classic series. .."ashutosh raised his eyebrow..."no...thats overpowered..youngsters tend to drive fast...aur yeh convertible looks trendy..bolo nidhi..which colour"??n nidhi smiled shyly as she said 'red...'n ashutosh smiled..his eyes seeming to say"i knew that"!!

He took out his cheque book n wrote out32lacs cheque...as nidhi clutched at his arm ..n whuspered"lets buy a santro..

"But ashutosh's looks made her keep quiet...

"Plz send my car home...i d drive with my wife..."!! And he gave the keys to nidhi...n smiled"chalao..dont be nervous..comprehensive insurance cover hai"!!and nidhi pouted"i am never rash...aap chalate hain fast to...jab jab angry hote hain...

"and ashutosh sat...as nidhi started the car...trying to recall all the functions that the sales guy had taught..."dont worry..ek week chalaogi..u d understand all...its my fault..i should have got u a car..earliwr...kal raat...i got scared..."nidhi gulped at the transparency with which her world famous husband expressed his feelings...just as she drove down hazrat ganj..he signalled her to atop...n as shw did..he got down...and returned within five minutes..."yeh tumhari cell ki back up ..now always carry it...ur cell should never go off..."nidhi could barely smile...as she held his hand...and he exclaimed"oh!!i should not have bought an automatic one!!now u would always hold my hand"!!n nidhi wrinkled her nose n left his hand...as ashutosh took her's n caressed it tenderly!!

"Nidhi ...aaj raat ko..i d take a viva on neurology..prepared rehna...samjhi..."!!nidhi nodded"kab aayenge.."??"8 baje...surgery hai.."!!and before she could say ..he was gone..and nidhi banged the books as she sat to study...

"Nidhi beti...padh liya sab kuch...koi problems hai..to bataa..i can help..."nidhi sighed n replied"i hate it baba...i wish mera selection hi naa ho...i dont want to do MD"baba smiled n asked "to bata tera kya mann hai"??nidhi played with the corner of her chunni..a lul shyly n then ran off...as baba smiled...understanding the unsaid...n wondering what ashu desired...

Dr ashutosh finished the light dinner he desired...n called out"chalo nidhi study time..."as nishi said'aai...aap chaliye..."and ashutosh got up..shaking his head...as armaan smiled..

"So..now tell me why should blood thinners not be given before cranial surgery..."it was dr ashutosh asking his wife ..at the moment his student ..at 1 in the night..nidhi yawned n answered"obviously because..clotting will be v slow..."ashutosh added"n it will be tough for a dr to seal wounds with so much of blood spillage..."nidhi asked...arching her back"aapne kaha tha 2 hrs..its been 5"!!ashutosh looked up .."so..time dekh ke padhai karogi kya??aur kya karna hai abhi..anji se gup..ya armaan ke sath ludo...sorry snakes n ladder..."!!nidhi pouted n stood up...and came close to her hubby...caressing his broad shoulders...and dropping a kiss on his throat...as he laughed.."my dear...MD ki entrance sar pe hai..aur tumhe romance yaad aa raha hai??sorry..ab u need sleep..then morning studies...chalo..haan agar chai ya coffee ka mann hai to pila sakta hoon"!!nidhi seemed irritated as she asked"aati hai aapko coffee banani"??n ashutosh replied"jaise pyaar karna seekh gaya..coffee banana bhi seekh jaaoonga"!!but nidhi thumped her feet n slumped to the bed...as dr ashutosh switched off the light n said"goodnight...bus ab 9 days hain..put in 200%effort.."and nidhi put a pillow to cover her angry face...as dr ashutosh said"itta gussa"!!n pulled nidhi to his chest...n patted her to sleep...his fingers entangled in her long hair...

"Hey nidhi...kya haal...hows life"??it was anji talking to nidhi...who yawned as she took the cell...as anji joked"kya kiya raat bhar ki ab bhi neend aa rahi hai"??nidhi reacted"very funny!!raat bhar padhaai ki...aur kya"!!

"Achcha bata..MD Entrance ke baad chalegi apni merc mei drive pe"??

"Hmmm.khatm to ho..yeh exam...i m sick of padhaai...mera mann nahi hai"!!

"Achcha..to kya mann hai tera..sunoo to"??

Nidhi deviated n asked"tu bata...tera kya haal hai"??

"Mera kya...dr ranga ki to ek hi rut hai...family shuru karo...i m sick yaar"!!

"But anji...it d be such fun..soch choti si anji..tere jaisi..main khoob khilaaoongi usse"!!

Nidhi sighed...she didn't want to share her deep desires..specially bcoz they were at collision course with her friend...

Nidhi knew anji's marriage was facing major issues...while dr ashutosh was dominating...n yet the strand of understanding was not lost...she knew that..for sure!!

"Nidhi...suno to...tumhe kuch bataana tha..."nidhi sat by her hubby..as she tidied his clothes...n he held her"dekho to...idhar...read this..."and he gave her a print out...n nidhi took it..thinking it to be a new study material...with exam just 3 days away...but her face seemed to glow n she jumped n hugged ashutosh..."mujhe le chalenge..boliye na"??and dr ashutosh hugged her"yesss...its our long awaited honeymoon...goa nahi ho saka..but u d love simla...i would like to give u happy memories...bahut dukh uthaya hai tumne...aur haan..i d take dr ranganath hope he d take anji...so while i am working u d have some fun..."!!

"Wahaan bhi work..honeymoon pe bhi"??

Ashu pulled her nose n said"conference is only for 3 hrs every day...baki samay..poora tumhare liye...poora din.."

Nidhi hugged n asked"aur poori raat"???ashutosh smiled..kissed nidhi lightly on the lips n then turned to his hardstone avatar..n ordered"ab cjalo baitho..aur padho...final lap is v crucial"!!and nidhi sighed ...as she sat with the book...but her eyes had dreams of their first trip together...how will they spend their days..n nights...she put her head on the book n closed her eyes...to dream of days under deodars...n nights ...on white sheets..with cool moonlight glistening over them...

Ashutosh sighed ...as he got up n tousled nidhi's hair...n spoke"nidhi...hey doc...time to study...not day dream...chalo padho..."and nidhi yawned...n pouted her lips...as ashutosh handed her a hot cup of strong coffee...

Chapter Thirty one..

Imtehaan ... zindagi ka...

To all of u who remembered my birthday n specially to swatishubh...i am blessed to share my bday with u my dear.

"Nidhi ..take a break..you must be v tired"said dr ashutosh as he returned home and was told by baba that nidhi had been studying the entire day...n now it was 9 in the night...nidhi looked up from the book..n yawned "aap naha leejiye phir khana lagwati hoon..."ashutosh smiled n said"main abhi aaya..n dont worry..kaka ne sab laga liya hai.."nidhi was absorbed in the book again..revising all that she could the night before the exam..she had to make it...though she wondered if she really wanted to...

"Utho ab..you need to eat...n relax a lil..exam se immediately pehle itni padhai is not good...chalo"and he almost pulled her...as she rubbed her eyes n said.."muh dho ke aati hoon ...aap chaliye"!!

It was a lil later that a tired looking nidhi emerged in her red gown and sat ...as kaka served"tu baith beti..aaj mujhe khilaane de.."as he served aalooutter ..paalak n raita..but ashutosh observed..nidhi ate v little..and as she got up to keep her plate..he held her hand n said"leave..it.mai rakh doonga.."!nidhi smiled as she left her plate n walked into the room...slumping in ashutosh's study chair...she began her final revision...oh the syllabus was so vast...she could not help remembering how dadi bua would massage her hair n get her hot coffee on nights before the exam...nidhi pushed the thoughts away...she needed to focus...when a hot steaming cup of coffee came before her...she blinked ...was it real??"pee lo...i know u take coffee in stress...but itta stress mat lo..nahi hua to na sahi...u can try next year...ya maybe a private college..."!nidhi smiled as she accepted the coffee gratefully n took a big long sip...'aaah"and looked at her husband.."aap nahi lenge"??he smiled as he stood against the wall..arms folded.."tum piyo..."nidhi smiled n gave him the cup...as he took a sip..n as she yawned again..he began to press her shoulders...she began to relax...feeling his nimble fingers...strong..n yet so soothing...she almost closed her eyes...only to shake her head n get up ..."na...let me complete...so gayi to neend subah hi khulegi...aap so jaaiye..."ashutosh nodded..patting her..he had solved all her queries..n knew could not help her anymore...nidhi sighed as she focussed on the book..n slides...as ashutosh called out"1 baje tak so jana..nahi to exam mei so jaaogi..."!nidhi wrinkled her nose n turned to the book...anatomy was what she called"jaan lewa"!!

*******dr ashutosh opened his eyes..n his arm felt for nidhi..she was missing..he looked at the watch...3.45...he got up...and wrinkles appeared on his brow at what he saw...nidhi was sitting..on the study chair..her head on the book...n hair all over her face...he got up...and gulped as he saw the highlighter still in her hand...she had gone off to sleep while studying...ashutosh closed the book and quietly lifted her in his arms as she barely moved...she was in such deep sleep...and he laid her in bed...as she turned n held on to his hand...ashutosh could look at those eyes forever...even closed..they had so many emotions in them...he slowly bent to kiss her...oh the desire almost over powering him...but he held back...she needed rest...he knew both of them had been fighting desire n solace of lying in each others arms...after hrs of lovemaking...because as ashutosh had told her..."studies first"!!he knew...today the wait would be over...n day after they were leaving for simla!!

Ashutosh switched off the light n went to sleep...his arm around nidhi...

"Arre chai kisne banaai...aur how did i come here...mai to ..padh rahi thi..

"Ashutosh looked at her as he pulled the curtains so that she could see the dahlias blooming in the lawn..she had begun to love gardening..n he admired that..their garden..once just a monochromatic green field had evolved into a lovely lawn with flowers all around..she had just planted sweet peas...n woth baba was errecting the supports...ashu knew it was her legacy..her dad had a small but lovely garden...only if...and nidhi yawned like a kid..."aaah...aaj freedom..

Per yeh bataaiye..how did i come here"??ashutosh smiled ..pulling her tresses gently..."main laaya..aur kaise aati...so gayee thi...jaise bachche so jaate hain maths exam se pehle..."!!nidhi laughed"maths!!!!oh god main to maths exam se pehle kabhi so hi nahi paati thi...baba kitna sulaate the...ek baar to nervousness me fever ho gayaa tha...poochiyega baba se"!!and then suddenly the spark in her eyes seemed to die...how will they ever meet col verma??was he ready to meet them...if only...

Ashu held her hand and changed the topic..."to exam ke baad aaj kya plan hai??aazaadi kaise manaaogi??anji ke saath ya rohan ke"??nidhi smiled"rohan tour pe hai...aur anji to ab milegi hi simla me...aapne booking kara li"??ashutosh nodded "sab bataaonga shaam ko...ab ready ho jaao...lekin tumne bataya nahi apna independence day plan"???nidhi laughed"kych nahi...jaante hain..school exams ke baad main aur anji khoob ice cream khate the...road vendor se..bada maza aata tha"!!dr ashutosh smiled as he got up to keep the cup...

"Beta nervous nahi hpna viva mei...just stick to ur point...i m sure tu top karegi...

Maine jo padhaya hai"!!said baba ..as nidhi bent to touch his feet..and armaan smiled"tu worry na kar nidhi...main exam cancel karwa doonga agar tera selection nahi hua"!!and all laughed...as ashutosh said"baba..aaj nidhi ki car se hi jaa raha hoon..iske exam centre to med college mei hi hai..kgh is walking distance..."baba nodded...as he waved..n the two left...baba sat in his rocking chair...n whispered to himself"nandini...beta tere liye jo khwaab dekhe the...woh teri bitiya poore kar rahi hai..."and then he suddenly thought of something ...got up and dialled a number...***********

"Colonel...kaise ho..."??col verma was quite surprised to hear a voice from his past...a voice that he could not easily forget..."aap dr mathur...sab theek hain na??dr ashutosh...nidhi"??baba smiled at his concern...that seemed to overpower his anger..."haan colonel sab theek hai..bus yeh bataane ko phone kiya ki humaari nidhi MD ka exam dene gayi hai...dekhna zuroor select hogi...tumhari nandini ka sapna poora ho jaayega..."col verma was overwhelmed for a moment ...as he heard"tumhari nandini"...clearing his throat...he spoke"aapki bhi to thi...nandini..."!!baba spoke..."haan col..thi to...per maine usse kho diya..ganwaa diya..apne aham mei...ahankaar me...zid mei...kaash aaj woh hoti...to tumhe nidhi ke saath aisa...nahi..."and he could go no further and disconnected the phone. ..as col verma...stood looking at his wife's photo...which seemed to say"ab buss bhi keejiye...dekhiye bula rahi hai aapko nidhi..."and col verma hung his head..

In grief...as dadi bua...standing in the doorway wiped her tears...

"Chalo best of luck...i d try to come when the exam gets over..unless OT ..."nidhi nodded...as she suddenly had an irrepressible urge to hug him...but refrained...as ashutosh touched her cheek...n held her hand for a moment...before withdrawing n straightening his tie...with youngsters around ..many of them his former interns wishing him'morning sir'!!nidhi turned...walked ..but looked back...yess dr ashutosh was standing there...looking at her with eyes that had love for her...n confidence in her abilities...nidhi felt better...as she went into room no.13!!

"Yipppie...its over..."said a young dr...as the vivas got over nafter the written...nidhi seemed confident...her viva was good...though the dr ...dr vergheese seemed quiet a pain...never satisfied woth her answers!!

As she walked down..she bumped into some interns with whom she had worked at city central...n as they said hi...nidhi smiled n got talking..everyone was apprehensive...n as nidhi sighed n said"i dont really bother..jo hoga so hoga..."and pat came the reply from some of them"arre u can afford to be relaxed...dean ki wife jo ho gayi hai..."!!nidhi felt her cheeks burning..but did not retaliate...as she saw dr ashutosh looking for her..scanning the crowd...and she ran...pushing her tears n anger back...she stopped just short of hugging her husband..and he raised his eyebrow..."how was it"??and she said"it was good ..but more importantly its over...ab chaliye...per aap...yahaan"??ashu opened the door of the car for her.."i had come about an hr back..ran into dr sharma...the HOD here...achcha bataao mood kyun off hai"??nidhi lowered her eyelids...she knew he could look through her..."woh...some interns...were saying...ki...i am .."ashutosh completed"..u r my wife..the dean's wife..so u r treated as special!!!come on..u neednt worry about such idiots...tum sach jaanti ho..."!!nidhi nodded ...and asked"ghar drop karenge..."??ashutosh spoke without looking at her"i thought..ice cream khaayenge hazrat ganj mei..."!!nidhi squealed n held his arm...as he patted her...

**********"i want a cassata...and a waffle cone.."ashutosh paid the vendor as he got her cone n cassata n a vanilla cup for himself..as he took a bite..nidhi pouted n forced him to take a bite from her cassata...and said"return bite nahi denge..."!!as ashutosh smiled n shook his head...and drove on...without conceeding!!

"Anji ranganath are flying tomorrow...we d go day after tomorrow...kal i cant...wild flower hall...4 days conference..aur phir 2 days sirf chutti...happy ho"??it was dr ashutosh explaining the details to a relaxed nidhi ...who sat close to him after tasty aloo parathas as dinner...amd as she yawned...ashutosh looked at her"so jaao..u look v tired..."nidhi seemed angry and turned away...as she suddenly felt his arms lifting her...and she giggled...he raised his eyebrow...n very soon his beard was scrapping her soft flesh...his lips on her breasts...as nidhi yearned and cried his name...her fingers pulling at his hair...and he looked up at her ...for an instant...making sure he was not hurting her...and began the journey across the barriers of culmination..of joy...and it took a while before their breathing returned to normal...

Nidhi snuggled close as ashutosh covered her n himself with a duvet...

And taking her in his arms..he closed his eyes...happy ..satisfied at the thought that he was helping her carve a bright career...

It was at about 8 in the morning that ashutosh opened his eyes...nidhi was still asleep ...blissfully ..covered with the duvet...as he shook her...she opened her eyes...n crumpled like a child"sona hai..."and ashutosh laughed as he got up and changed n threw her gown to her...as she yawned n got up...and he asked"kyun uth gayi..so jao "!!and nidhi looked at him n smiled"nahi so sakti...aapke bina kambakht neend hi nahi aati"!!ashutosh stood mesmerised. .unable to speak...and just then he heard baba shout"ashu...jaldi aa..dekh to kaun aaya hai"!!and as dr ashutosh hurried outside ...n nidhi dressed quickly to emerge...they stopped in their tracks...seeing col verma stand on their threshold...ashutosh looked at nidhi...tears rolling down her cheeks...he held her hand ...as cv said"kya main andar aa sakta hoon..."????

Chapter Thirty two...

Zevar...

To bawa n sawtishubh..

As col verma stood across the threshold...waiting for his daughter to rush into his arms...baba n dr ashutosh looked at nidhi..whi just stood there and then turning away rushed into her bedroom...as col verma slowly turned away ..his head bowed woth sorrow n disappointment. ..just as he was about to go..ashutosh stepped out and stopped him...without a word..and as baba hugged cv;ashutosh mumbled an apology and went into his bedroom...

As expected nidhi was in the wash room..,he entered with the authority of a husband...only to find her wash her face and step out silently...

He held her n said"nidhi..

Dekho baba aaye hain tumhare...chalo dekho intezaar kar rahe hain.."nidhi distanced herself...her face showing hurt n bitterness..."maine bhi bahut intezaar kiya tha...jab hospital nei akela chod gaye the...aap nahi hote...to kahaan jati main..."??

Ashutosh rubbed her back..trying to stabilise her breathing...n looked into her eyes..."nidhi ..this is not fair..tumhe yeh yaad raha..aur yeh nahi yaad raha ki tumhare school ke bahar unhone kitna intezaar kiya hoga...exam se pehli raat jagte the tumhare sath...tumhe sabse zyada pyaar karte hain..shayad mujhse bhi zyada..."nidhi looked at him doubtfully. .and countered.."aur unhone jo kiya humare sath..aapke saath..woh bhool jaaon"???dr ashutosh held her by her shoulders n said"hey nidhi ..samjho..unke liyebhi aasaan nahi hoga apne se bus 8 baras chota damaad accept karna...aur i agree his reaction was wrong..but then he has realised..n come around..chalo ab..come on..."but nidhi seemed adamant...as she said"dr ashutosh..you dont know what it is to be rejected by a father...aap nahi samjhenge"..and dr ashutosh retaliated with equal hurt n controlled anger"yes nidhi ..i wont understand...because i never had a father...kya hota hai bina baap ke jeena..yeh tum nahi samjhogi...kabhi nahi...socho agar kal ko..humaare bachchon ne aisa kiya humare sath ...to"???nidhi could not control her ...feeling shaken at his grief...she put her head on his hairy broad chest...as he held her...quietly ..without a word...in that moment of love n forgiveness. ..

Col Verma stood up as dr ashutosh brought nidhi out...and removed his arm from around her waist...nidhi looked at her dad..her baba...who stood..a lil hesitant..a lil unsure...she could not bear it...n rushed into her first refuge...and col verma held her...without any words...he then separated nidhi a lil and extended his hand to hold dr ashutosh. ..as he said"dr ashutosh. .zindagi mei galtiyaan to bahut ki hain maine...per aapko galat samajhne se badi galti shayad kuch nahi thi...i am so..."but dr ashutosh hugged him ...before he could apologise Borh nidhi n ashutosh asked when dadi bua d come...n cv smiled n added.."akhir woh nidhi se kab tak door rahengi..."!!as nidhi smiled through her tears...and kaka made the moment even more beautiful by bringing in coffee n pakoras...as nidhi exclaimed..."oh ..aap to chutney ke saath khaate hain..bus abhi layi..."and she ran in with a new energy...as dr ashutosh observed her new vitality..her new joy...n held col verma's hand and said"thank you ...sir..."!!and col verma could barely speak.

"Chote sarkaar...naashta nahi loonga main...dr ashutosh ke yahaan kar ke aaya hoon..."said col verma as he sat in his favourite chair ...n looked at dadi bua from the corner of his eye...she pushed the peas she was peeling...as cv said"kal mil aayega chote sarkar..nidhi yaad kar rahi thi aapko.."!! And dadi bua snarled"waah..kahaan se ho ke aaya hai yog"??

"Bua..dr ashutosh ke ghar se..yaad hai nidhi ke pati..humaare..iss ghar ke damaad..."

Dadi bua winced"haan haan sab yaad hai..kaise gaya tha...tu..bata"??

"Bua..beti se milne jaane ki koi wajah thode hi hoti hai..bus jee kiya to chala gaya...waise hi maine kaafi der kar deee..."!!

Dadi bua seemed a lil shaken...as she bit her lip n asked"kaisi hai..nidhi..uss daktar ke sath..."??

Col verma smiled"bua..unka naam hai dr ashutosh..."!!

"Haan haan janti hoon...tu bata meri bachchi kaisi thi??khush to thi"??

Cv smiled"haan bua bahut khush thi...aankhon me na koi darr na koi pareshaani...raani ban ke raaj ker rahi us ghar pe...kaash aap dekh pati...vahut yaad ker rahi thi..."and then added naughtily"haan chote sarkar ko"and dadi bua winced!!"aur kisi ko nahi"??and cv teased along.."haan haan..solanki..shyama bhabhi...misraji sabko..."and as dadi bua's face list colour...cv smiled n held her"haan bua...aapko bahut yaad ker rahi thi...aankhein bhar aayi thi uski...aur dr ashutosh ne khaas invite kiya hai aapko...ab aage apki marzi...jaayengi to aap hain nahi..."!!

Bua evaded the question n asked'kaisi lag rahi thi meri nidhi. ..kuch zevar pehne the ki nahi"??cv kept quiet n said"bua humne usse zevar diye hi kahaan??haan per sab se sundar zevar usne pehna tha..dr ashutosh ka pyaar..unka sath..unka vishwass..."!!and dadi bua closed her eyes n folded ger hands as she silently prayed"hey bajrang bali..meri bachchi ki jodi salaamat rakhna..uska suhaag banaaye rakhna"!!and as tears flowed out..of her old eyes...cv smiled...at the realisation of mistakes...at the time of reunion...at the joys that would soon blossom in his nidhi's life...

"Hey nidhi...packing hui teri"??it was anji over the cell as nidhi sat packing suits n casuals for dr ashutosh..she had already packed for herself..though she felt she could have done with a few more pullovers...but now there wasnt any time left.."hmmm buss ho hi gayi..tum log"??anji replied"off to the airport..i m so excited nidhi ..kitta maza aayega..thanx to jeejaji..khoob masti..khoob shopping..."!!nidhi laughed"tu bhool rahi hai..unki conference hai..."anji chided"jaanti hoon..per raat ko to room me..."and nidhi smiled"chup badmash...main janti hoon unka routine...its tough..zyaada time nahi nikal paayenge...per i am excited..

Chal..milte hain...bye..aur ladaai nahi kar lena dr ranganath se"!!

As nidhi sat on the bed caressing his suits...dr ashutosh was standing at the doorway..he had come 5 minutes back..and had heard all...his eyes dwelled with pride..as he heard nidhi understanding his responsibilities...but he had promised himself ..he d give all possible time to his nidhi...take her on trails..collect flowers..and even try to string them in her long hair...he knew he needed to be at least a little more expressive...but he just couldn't bring himself up to it...but then he looked at the shopping bags in his hands..he coughed n nidhi's face lit up.."aare aa gaye aap...dekhiye mai ne sab pack ker liya...bus shoes aapke kaun kaun se rakhu"??ashutosh kissed her lightly.."main rakh loonga...mere shoes ko vchoone ki zaroorat nahi hai tumhe...aur yeh lo..tumhare liye ek coat hai aur kuch pullovers..do u like them??"nidhi opened the packets to see a lovely wine coloured woollen coat with a lovely hood n fur collar..."beautifulll...its just lovelyyy...thank you..thank you so much.."and she hugged her hubby...a generation senior to her...and a lil dazed at her euphoria...just for a coat!!but that was what his nidhi was all about...

It was about three hours later that dr ashutosh yawned and came to bed..keeping his i pad..by the bedside..he had packed his book and lecture points..now he just wanted to unwind..

As he lay...nidhi snuggled upto him...and he hugged her...feeling her form..but she mumbled..."ummm sona hai..neend aa rahi hai"!!and he smiled n pulled her to him..caressing her ...he knew she was excited about the trip...and he would try to make it memorable. ..for sure...ashutosh kept looking at a sleeping nidhi...somehow..he just loved it...just gazing at her...asleep...blussfully unaware of any tension...he could spend his life looking at her...

"Mallika..this file has all details of the treatment for icu patients..rest u can handle...dr ranganath will come in 4 days...i am off for a week..."mallika stood up...playing with her chain..she asked"tum to itne din kabhi nahi jaate the..."??ashutosh looked at her a lil sardonically n said"tum shayad bhool rahi ho...ab meri zindagi me nidhi hai..uski khushi..uskae khwaab unka khayaal rakhna hai mujhe..."!!mallika kept quiet...but kept gazing at the file..though ashutosh knew she was not reading...he could see the dark circles below her eyes..had she been drinking again??he wanted to reach out as a friend...he understood her pain..but what he could never forgive her was the way she had hurt nidhi..insulted her in all possible ways...!!ashutosh finally sighed n said"chalta hoon...take care.."mallika pushed her tears back as she waved...but ashutosh had already left...

Mallika poured another whiskey for herself...as she closed her eyes...n kept thinking of nidhi n ashutosh...in simla..under the deodars...ashutosh n nidhi under white sheets...ashutosh playing violin for nidhi...oh she could not tolerate...n threw her glass...looking at the shattered crystals like the pieces of her lonely heart...n mallika sank on the sofa n sobbed helplessly..

"Oh nidhi...why did u do this...mera tha ashutosh..mera...sorf mera..."!

Chapter Thirty three...

yeh shaam mastani... madhosh kiyye jaa...

"Beta khoob ghoomna..enjoy karna..yehaan ki chinta nahi karna...aur haan whassapp karte rehna..."it was baba blessing his son n daughter in law aa they about to leave for simla..armaan smiled n joined "photos bhi whasapp karna...romantic waale"!!but a stern look from his friend seemed to silence him...as nidhi n ashutosh sat in the cab...n waved back...

"Buss...i hope flight delayed na ho..."it was nidhi chirping as the cab reached the airport..and dr ashutosh paid the cabbie..as nidhi ran in enthusiasm and got a trolley..dr ashutosh smiled as he transferred the two suitcases and was about to push it...when nidhi nudged"mujhe karne deejiye na..plz..i like it"!!he smiled n let her..with a firm hand on her waist...

As they sat after the security check ..nidhi almost pulled dr ashutosh around to "experience the airport"!!as he laughed n said"i didnt know you were so fond of the airport...aise hi simla jaa rahe hain..we could have just gone around this airport n returned..."and as nidhi seemed to pout..he took her to the new cafe lounge and ordered a pasta for her and a cappachino for himself..as nidhi corrected the order"with milk plz"!

His cell buzzed and he smiled as he said"hi col verma..i was expecting ir call...kaise hain aap aur dadi bua"??nidhi looked at him...dazed at the ease at which the convo flowed along ..n then suddenly he theust the cell to her"lo...tumhare baba..."nidhi grabbed the cell...but was suddenly short of words..."baba..."and ashutosh could only hear her "jee baba"n "laut ke..."as he looked at her..she explained "pooch rahe the kab aaoongi ghar...unke"!!ashutosh patted her hand..as she suddenly felt a strange urge to cry...but held on..the flight announcement helped her digress as they got up to board..dr ashutosh putting a spoon full of pasta in his mouth..."not bad"!!and nidhi smiled as she added"pasta can never ever be bad "!!

It was after a two hr flight with a stop over at delhi that they finally landed at the tiny airport of Jubbal...about 40 km from mashobhra..and as they deplaned..dr ashutosh could feel nidhi shiver..the weather was certainly chilly!!he made her push her arms in a cardigan as they settled in a mercedez benz sent by the hotel..and the drive began...

The twists n turns of the hilly route almost synonymous to life..and as the road crossed the simla by pass...ashutosh saw the old yellow church..and remembered the last time they had been here..together yet apart..the memory of the pale sick nidhi..sleeping in the cab flashed back...as he gulped and put his arm around nidhi's waist almost pulling her to him..nidhi understood the pain as she could see the shadow of agony flash his deep eyes...n as a reassurance she put her head on his shoulder and caressed the hand around her waist..they did not speak...there was nothing to say..no words were needed!!..

Just as the pines changed to deodars..nidhi put her hand on her husband's chest and he looked at her...she poited at the small cluster coming by..yess the same spot where they had sipped tea..ashutosh smiled n nodded as nidhi sat up n told the driver"bhaiyya plz stop here..chasi peeyenge"the driver pulled up the car on to the side as they got down..and dr ashutosh said ..hiving him a 500 rs note"chaai naashta kar lo..then we d start..."he nodded as the couple went in..n nidhi announced'aaj no sandwich..no health diet..pooore ghee wale aaloo ke parathe aur kadak chai..what say"??and dr ashutosh frowned.."chai me thodi cheeni kum..chalegi"??and nidhi shot back"nope...no cheeni kum..na chai mein ..naa zindagi mein "!!and within minutes both were biting into hot aaloo parathas from which dr ashutosh had tried his level best to temove the dripping oil ..by using a bunch of tissues..as nidhi laughed her head off...till dr ashutosh drawled"itni hunsne ki kya baat hai dr nidhi.."!!and she squealed further like a child ..on a picnic!!

As they started again..nidhi with two parathas gone in was enjoying the ride even more...as she chatted with the cabbie about sight seeing..n surfed kufri n chail on her cell..and declared"kal kufri..."as dr ashutosh reminded her"dont forget kal 3 baje tak conference hai..."!!but then seeing her wide eyes..added"uske baad we d walk till the sunset point...chalogi na mere sath"??n nidhi nodded ..her eyes conveying clearly that she would go anywhere with him...till the ends of the earth..n even beyond!!and dr ashutosh squeezed her hand and held on to it...as the car drew into the porch of the wonderful resort...their honeymoon destination...

The GM was their to tecieve the fabled neurosurgeon n his young wife ..and as he ushered them..he said"sir we are honoured that you have chosen to make our hotel ur honeymoon destination...kindly come along..we have tried to arrange the very best for you"!!dr ashutosh smiled...a trifle embarrassed as he n nidhi were taken to the woodville suite..with a personal pool n jacuzzi overlooking the mountains..and a small garden of their own..

As the GM handed them a bottle of chilled champagne..dr ashutosh smiled n added"thanx but no thanx..we d prefer some hot tea..if possible with a lil ginger.."and there was laughter!!

As nidhi enquired about dr n mrs ranganath..she was told they had gone to simla..nidhi sighed"oh anji n shopping...inseparable"!!

About half an hr later..dr ashutosh in his khakis n a brown high neck sat sipping tea with nidhi...in her blue churidaar kurta n a black sweater..as he suddenly pointed to a pair of mountain birds...carrying twogs to make their nest...as nidhi came close to him n said"humne bhi aakhir apna ghonsla bana hi liya..."as dr ashutosh kissed her on her lips n added"ghonsla ya makaan to tha hi..tum aayee aur tumne mujhe makaan aur ghar ka farq samjha diya..."!!and nidhi just put her head on his chest ..as he enveloped her in his arms and time seemed to stand still!!

"Nidddhiii"it was an exuberant anji in her jeans and a tight top..who came n higged nidhi in the lobby ...as dr ranganath said hi..n nidhi got up to meet them.."jeejs kahaan gaye"??nidhi laughed"jeejs"??ans as anji nidded..she expained"abhi conference ka arrangement dekhne gaye hain..."!!and anji seemed to frown"oh jeeju bhi na..too much hain..arre yaar honeymoon hai..conference to..time pass ...pata hai..dr ranganath ne ek exclusive candle light dinner pan kiya hai humaare liye..overlooking the pool..so romantic na"!!and nidhi nodded..as dr ashutosh entered n anji hugged him..he patted her in a fatherly way..and then began talking to dr ranganath about tomorrow..anji seemed a lil dazed at the passion that dr ashutosh had for work..even on what was supposed to be his honeymoon!!

As they got up..dr ashutosh asked"dinner..anji.."??but as dr ranganath smiled uncomfortably..nidhi explained they had planned a cosy twosome..as dr ashutosh seemed to understand and withdrew with a "bye ..see you tomorrow at breakfast.."and then looked at nidhi n extended his hand "walk"??nidhi nodded as they came out into the lawn..n felt the chill..as nidhi pulled her sweater tighter..ashutosh walked on..to the winding path..that led to theentrance downhill...as they walked..they waved to many drs arriving now..and suddenly..ashu held nidhi..n said"hey nidhi..dekho..."and together they looked at the sun almost between the mountains...and they stood under the deodars..as the hot ball of fire disappeared. Colouring the western sky with reddish hues..as ashutosh took a deep breath...of satisfaction..sunsets had always seemed so depressing to him..the victory of darkness over light..till nidhi came into his life..now the sunset signified just an interlude between days of joy n sunshine...as nidhi touched his cheek.."kahaan kho gaye"??and he smiled..n replied"tumhare sath pehli baar din doobte hue dekha...auer yeh mehsoos kiya ki koi saath ho.to ek shaant shaam bhi kitni khoobsoorat ho sakti hai..."nidhi looked at him naughtily n enquired"koi saath ho...ya main "??and he paused for a while n drew a deep breath n said"mere liye aur koi ho hi nahi sakta tha nidhi..ya tum ..ya akelapan..aur koi nahi..."!!and they walked on...as a dr ashutosh seemed to hum"yeh shaam mastani..madhosh kiye jaa..

Mujhe dore koi kheenche..teri ore liye jaaye"nidhi was surprised..she had never heard him sing...though she had been told by baba he sang beautifully...but today it was a relaxed ashutosh...not a neurosurgeon but just a middle aged man..who had just learnt to discover the beauties of life...and they walked on..together hand in hand..stopping to cath a breath..look at each other n then go on...

"Oh god!!not mughlai again...candle light mei koi chicken khata hai kya??i thought kuch exotic menu hoga...palestinian..ya french "it was anji showing her disappointment as ranga n she sat on a lovely candle lit table..with kabaabs n champagne..ranga's face lost colour..and then flushed with itritation"aage se surprise ka menu bhi pooch liya karoonga tumse..ok"??and anji made a face"better hoga ki jaan jaayein main kya chahti hoon.."ranga retorted ..in a low tone "tum jaanti ho..main kya chahta hoon..."??anji flared"off course roz to yaad dilaate hain..uthte jaagte..sote baby baby baby...uff i am tired..."the convo was interrupted as the waiter came to serve and anji relented..more out of manners than love..

"Kaisa hai kebab"??she asked trying to sound reconciliatory but the mood was spoilt..as ranganath sniped back"swaad to bigaad chuki ho tum..."!!and anji hated the moment...longing to be with her pampering parents ...rather than here with this man..who was always criticising..demanding...ufff!!marriage was complicated...wasnt it??

"Dr ashutosh...yeh shower...plz"!!cried nidhi..as ashutosh got up from the arm chair in front of the window n came into the toilet..as nidhi stood..with a towel around her breasts ...he looked at her..n then slid the knob as hot water began to drizzle...n the towel fell off...she lowered her eyes..but held on to ashutosh...as he raised his eyebrow n peeled off his clothes...

It was an hr later that they sat watching news on tv n eating chole ..himachali curry n naan ..followed by kheer..dr ashutosh put an arm around her n asked"kal you also want candle light dinner"??and nidhi shook her head..."no..restaurant mei...jahaan sab honge...i love people...i love ...i love everything aapke saath..."!!and ashutosh kissed her as he asked"aur mere bina..."??nidhi seemed to be lost..in their months of separation as she said"aapke bina ..kuch nahi bhaata..."and suddenly sobbed...as ashutosh hugged her toght...n caressed her...bringing her to the window...n removing the curtains..."dekho baahar..woh kahin door jalte diye..."and nidhi nodded..but turned to him...closing her eyes in his hug"mujhe kuch nahi dekhna...siwa aapke..."and ashu held her as he closed his eyes in the peace of their love...

Walks in wildernesses...meeting people...coming up...ashutosh gets to see the other side of nidhi...a motherless child..yearning to shower affection...

Chapter Thirty four...

Disha...

"Utho nidhi..."it was dr ashutosh calling out to his wife ..as he tied his pale pink tie and combed his hair..looking just for a few seconds at his own reflection ..a middle aged neurosurgeon in a navy blue three piece suit...he smiled n took up his i pad just to go through the papers at the conference..

Nidhi yawned and almost threw away the quilt..only to pull it back to cover herself...for she was still in a state of undress...as she rubbed her eyes..looking at her hubby..who was raising his right eyebrow and stealing a glance at her..she frowned n cried"nightie deejiye na plz"!!ashutosh spoke without looking up from his i pad n said"i dont think ki kal raat tumne nightie pehni bhi thi"!!and nidhi cried"plzzz"and ashutosh kept his i pad n opened the wardrobe to pull out a grey n blue churidaar kurta in silk and even sifted the undergarments as nidhi smiled n pulling the robe around her ran into the toilet..as dr ashutosh shook his head at her shyness!!!

Nidhi emerged 10 minutes later and as she combed her hair..dr ashutosh said"breakfast ke baad i d go to the hall...see you at about 3..lunch mann ho to ker lena..will u like to go shopping with anji to simla??"

Nidhi looked confused.."i dont know un dono ka kya plan hai...will dr ranganath also be in there till 3"??ashutosh shook his head"no after 12 its only for super specialists. .he d be free"nidhi replied"then i feel let the two of them go...aise bhi lucknow mei they dont have much time..i d do something..dont worry..."ashutosh smiled as they walked out..n he handed her the room card"baaher jao to plz travel desk se hi cab lena..aur plz reception pe keh jaana..kabhi kabhi signal poor rehta hai hills mein..cell nahi lagega!"nidhi pouted"dont worry..i d be fine..bachchi nahi hoon"ashutosh gave her a deep intense look ..n said almost seductively"jaanta hoon..."!!

At breakfast buffet...ashutosh chose a table by the window..they could see the tall deodars n the lovely lawns..as nidhi ordered some cereal n milk for dr ashutosh n got some fruits for herself..nidhi felt ashutosh's warm hand on her elbow ..she looked up..he was pointing to her...she looked at the direction...anji n dr ranganath sat on a table at the far end...but even from the distance it seemed clear that all was not well...nidhi sighed..."ladaai hui hai..i can smell it"!!ashutosh nodded as he took a toast "dont pry...ghoomna thoda anji ke saath..theek ho jaaye ..shayad..nahi to baat karenge...kal.."!!

Nidhi looked up..as a senior man stood at their table ..n dr ashutosh stood up n so did nidhi..as ashutosh shook hands and introduced him to nidhi...'nidhi..meet dr Raghav..from CMC vellore..we were together at london..Raghav ..my wife .

Dr nidhi.."and nidhi was almost in a bear hug of the elderly dr as he released her n patted"dont worry dr nidhi...this is a gesture of thanks..thanks for hooking dr hardstone...we all had given up on him...come let me take you around..."and in the next 5 mins nidhi was taken around to meet 5 couples..all of around dr ashutosh's age..n his friends n colleagues..and they all greeted nidhi v affectionately..till finally dr gupta said"now ashutosh ..u have to share...where did you find this solitairre"??and nidhi blushed as she looked at ashutosh...n he merely rubbed his beard n said"drs..its conference time in half an hr..."!!and as he walked back to the table..dr gupta called"come on dr nidhi..this is not a state secret...tell us plzzz"!!and nidhi smiled...n cleared her throat..as she looked at her husband..completely absorbed in his thoughts...n she replied"i was his intern...at kgh"!!and there was loud cheering all around as ashutosh finally looked up..and dr Raghav exclaimed"come on..lets have a small party at night...a cake to mark the HOOKING OF THE MOST ELIGIBLE BACHELOR OF THE MEDICAL FRATERNITY"!!ashutosh nodded n added"fine...as long as you guys dont ask me for any further details.."!!and gave a rare smile..to add"off course u can ask nidhi...as it is she is very fond of talking"!!and there were claps as ashutosh thrust a butter toast in her mouth...

"Bata na ..kya hua hai...kal dinner pe kuch"??nidhi nudged anji...as the two friends walked on the back lawn..anji didnt respond..but finally explained"chode de yaar..humaare views milte hi nahi..kissi cheez mei.."nidhi frowned"views to mere aur unke bhi nahi milte..humaari to umr ka bhi bahut farq hai..per phir bhi..."anji smiled...sadness very apparent in her lively eyes"per tabb bhi..tujhe kitni freedom..kitni independence dete hain jeeju...yahaan to dr ranganath aur unke parents...oh god ..so many expectations. .ghar sundar rakho..sabse milo...aur baby...eeeks "!!nidhi didnt say anything...she knew she n her child hood friend were not on the same page about this...much as nidhi wanted to be a mother...anji abhorred the thought...that was probably due to their different childhood...nidhi sighed n said"jaa ready ho ja...dr ranganath aate hain ..to jaa ghoomne..mood theek kar..."and anji hugged her nut said"aur tu..akele"??nidhi laughed "so jaaoongi...sleepy hoon"!!and anji smiled"oh yesss!!main to bhiol gayi thi...tumhara to honeymoon hai!!sleep time during the day"!!and nidhi blushed"jaa chup badmash ..."!!and anji ran to her room...while nidhi sauntered to the reception...

"Hullo dr mallika...any news of dr ashutosh"??it was dr mallik..the well known neuro on call to kgh in the absence of dr ashutosh ..n as dr mallika shook her head...he smiled n quipped"busy with his wife..i am sure..honeymoon after all"!!and dr mallika worked a smile as she went on her round..work was the only thing that seemed to be giving her solace..if at all..otherwise she could neither eat..nor sleep...kgh without ashutosh was unbearable..infact she could not bear the fact that he was indeed spending his days..his nights..his evenings with nidhi...oh dr nidhi..why had she come in his life at all...

It was a dact that dr ashutosh had always refused dr mallika..n kept the relationship strictly that of two friends..but as there was no one in their life...that platonic relationship was also an anchor to mallika...but wirh the advent of nidhi..like a gust of monsoon..the balance had been destroyed..the brooding bachelor who enjoyed black cappachino n savoured classical music with her..began to have a taste for picnic n golguppe!!oh how could he!!"madam...bed no.14 ki surgery..."and dr mallika nodded and walked towards the OT...her life was confined to the hospital...this was her destiny..a long lonely riad...with no shoulder to lean on...

Dr ashutosh looked around in the lobby where a few non medico wives were waiting..but nidhi was no where to be seen...he walked to the room..maybe she was resting...he had hardly let her sleep the previous night...he knocked...no reply...he frowned n walked to the reception. ."any message from my wife"??the front office manager smiled n said"no sir...but yes she had come about 2 hrs back asking if we had a kids activity centre...we told her we didnt...i saw her ho out into the lawn..."!ashutosh nodded n walked out...the clouds had descended on the lawn ..and it was beautiful..the tall cypress n oak barely visible..he looked around fpr nidhi...she wasnt around..in the lawn were walking a couple...of around 30 years...the wife visibly pregnant..n the husband holding her tenderly as she walked...dr ashutosh looked a trifle irritated. ..when suddenly ..like a beam of sunshine..through the darkness..he could hear that lovely laughter of nidhi...n as he looked around..there she was ..playing with a cute baby..all rolled up in overall...must have been about 2 years...she was lifting her..yes it was a girl..with a pink bow in her hair..n then kissing her plump cheeks..clapping n rubbing noses...as the child seemed to savour her touch...ashutosh was mesmerised ...he stood still...absorbing the scene...nidhi's face transfigured with a joy that he had hardly ever seen

When suddenly he saw the young man n his preggy wife walk up to ger.

.they said something n nidhi handed over the baby to the husband but not before kissing her ten times...n the child shook her hand in a bye...as they went...ashutosh could see nidhi a lil lost...as if a part of her had been taken away...he walked with firm steps n put his arm around her..."main kab se dhoondh raha hoon tumhe"!!she smiled as she snuggled up to him..and replied"kuch nahi..ek couple tha..unki beti se khel rahi thi..DISHA..naam hai..do baras ki...but she s so cute...cant tell u..."dr ashutosh was trying to bring her indoors .."sweater kahaan hai...thand lag jaayegi..chalo"!!and she followed him..

As he asked"lunch kiya"??and she pouted"aapke bina?"and he sighed as he took her into the restaurant...and she sifted the menu to order a sizzler and ashutosh added a beg pulao ...as the sizzlwr arrived ..she laughed n said"dadi bua sizzler ko trian ki seeti kehti hain...kehti hain rail aa gayi"@!ashu laughed n added..."we must take her to a sizzler joint. .

Lets see kya hoga"!!and nidhi laughed as she dipped into her sizzler ...giving a bite to dr ashutosh...as he focussed on hus pulao..

"Ab kya ..."??as they walked back to the room...and nidhi said"change kar ke so jaate gain...aapko bhi sleep deficit hoga...phir shaam ko...walk...deodar ke neeche..what say"??and ashutosh just looked at her...lost in those deep eyes...in which he had observed a cheerful laughter...when playing with Disha...he had sensed nidhi's desire...almost becoming a craving...but then...and he closed his eyes...drawing her to him...a swet smile on her rosy poutin g lips...that he kissed lightly...

It was at about 5 that nidhi extricated herself from the strong arms of her husband and made tea in the kettle. .n freshened up...the sun was approaching the hills...she woke ashutosh..n handed him the tea...as he yawned...n looked outside...she took a sip as she wore her walking shoes...n ashutosh threw her coat around her shoulders..himself wearing his black jacket ..on his casuals...n they walked out..

The evening was about to set..the sun was coming down...but today they walked east wards under the thick branches of the deodars..where the evening was already dark..and the wind was rustling the needle leaves...as ashutosh held nidhi by the shoulders n showed her the darkness of the east horizon contrasted by the red hues of the west...and nidhi seemed lost...so much like life...some years..dark n desolate..n some so bright...and they walked around the lawn..ashutosh telling her about the conference ..n that he had ordered pasteies for all at night..from their side..nidhi giggled"black forest"??n he nodded"yess..black forest with loads of choco chips...jaisa tumhe pasand hai.."and she hugged him..as he said"chalo..lets walk up there...us shelter mei chai peeyenge"and as he requested a waiter..the two walked up to a lovely rain shelter of the hotel..from where the hotel looked even more majestic..

Nidhi sipped the tea..n then said"kal shopping jaaoongi...baba ke liye to shawl loongi...aur armaanji ka cigarette case...what to take something for dr mallika"???ashutosh turned serious n replied"nothing..."and nidhi asked why???a terse ashutosh replied"kyunki jo woh chaahti hai..usse kabhi mil nahi sakta..."!!

And then drawing nidhi closer the t walked down..

Just as they reached the reception...ashu saw a cab stop in the porch..and a disturbed ranga followed by an angry anji entered...and dr ashutosh looked at nidhi...

Chapter Thirty five...

Faasle anji ranganath ke...

Dr ashutosh walked after anji n ranganath but they entered their room n closed it in a huff!!nidhi was going to knock but ashutosh stopped her n got her back to their suite...as she looked up worried..he calmed her n said"chill..give them 15 mins then i d call them here...n let me talk ok"??nidhi nodded but continued to walk agitated..as ashutosh went in to change n appeared in his black hoodie n tracks...looking devastating ..but nidhi didnt seem to notice ..he bit his lip n asked"nidhi..chai"??and then as she seemed unresponsive he himself got up to brew some ..n got her a cup with some chips.."eat..nahi to aur gussa aayega..when u r hungry ..u tend to be short tempered..bilkul bachchon ki tarah..lo"and nidhi smiled as she accepted the tea n chips...and said"kya hoga anji ka"??ashutosh looked serious n said"aur dr ranganath ka bhi...samjhaana hoga..dekhte hain..."and then as nidhi got up to keep the cup..he held her hand..just lightly..entwining their fingers n looking at them..almost symbolic of their lives interlinked intimately...and as nidhi smiled faintly..he took the intercom n dialled dr ranganath 's room."hullo..dr ranganath..i would like u n anji to come to our room...immiediately plz...ab isse order samajhiye chahe request..i d expect u both in 10 minutes"!

Dr ranganath looked a lil dazed n flustered at the chill in ashutosh's voice..he had not been expecting this call...dr ashutosh normally never interfered in the private affairs of others...at least he never used to..but now it was different..anji was dr nidhi's best friend..almost like a sister...so no wonder dr ashutosh would protect her interests...ranganath seemed bugged..but sighed n said"chalo..dr ashutosh ne bulaaya hai...we have to go.."!!and an angry anji followed.

Dr ashutosh opened the door leading to the drawing room of their massive suite..as he said"come dr ranganath...come in anji...nidhi buss aa rahi hau nahaa ke..tea coffee"??dr ranganath shook his head n then said in a controlled tone that had a deep underlying irritation "sir aapne bulaya..."ashutosh nodded and then looked up as nidhi entered in her pink gown..he smiled at her..n then looked at anji n ranga..his expression changing.."well main dekh raha hoon..tum dono mei..kaafi tension rehti hai...infact i had thought ki iss trip ko enjoy karoge..as u live in a joint family there...but..u dont seem to enjoy..what is the matter"??dr ranga looked at anji..who seemed agitated n responded"jeeju..i will tell u..this marriage is an arrangement in which only i have to adjust..subah se shaam tak..inke parents ki sewa karo..aur phir inki...mera to kuch astitva hi nahi hai..."dr ashutosh looked at ranganarh..who countered 'sir..she is so spoilt ki agar bedroom ki chadar bhi maid nahi theek kare to mujhe karni padti hai...pata nahi madam kya karna chahti hain..i really dont know.."!!before ashutosh could ask anji..she shouted"jeeju..i am not an aaya butler cook...i have a life of my own..i am a fashion designer...but design karna to door mujhe to dresses pehana bhi allowed nahi..jab bhi kuch stylish pehanti hoon..inki maa ka gaana..."ranga almost yelled"maa ko nahi laao..."and ashutosh raised his hand to stop both of them firmly and then looked at anji..affectionately..almost like a father n said"anji...try to be a lil reasonable..dr ranga tumhe work karne se to nahi roke rahe..thoda tum bhi samjho...after all nidhi ko dekho..kitna adjust karti hai..she has made baba n armaan her family.."as dr ranganath noded in agreement ..anji retaliated "jeejs i dunno nidhi adjust karti hai..apni khushi se..yaa aapke darr se"!!nidhi looked up..in anger...but ashutosh signalled her to be quiet..and he looked at anji"anji..mere khayal se nidhi meri izzat karti hai...darti nahi hai mujhse..."anji answered"aap ussse 20 baras bade hain..so this so called izzat..dr ranganath to meri age ke gain..so main kyun aarti utaaroon unki..sorry..i cant be nidhi"!!dr ranga spoke"sir she wouldnt listen..iske parents ne bahut ziddi banaya hai isse"!!ashutosh raised his eyebrow in anger n said"sorry ranga..this is not required...you have to respect ur inlaws..aur solanki saheb aur aunty bahut samajhdar hain..problem tum dono mein hai...n these r all symptoms ..asli wajah kuch aur hai.."!!anji looked at dr ranganath...n said'i will tell u..he s not ready to give me any freedom..for anything..buss"as dr ranga seemed to say ..ashutosh patted him"ranga..cool down..aur anji tum bhi...you know what..tum dono pyaar to karte ho ek doosre se..per shayad kyunki tum dono ki shaadi ki koi khilaafat nahi hui na..maan gaye sab..to u guys dont value your togetherness..agar mere aur nidhi ki tarah se suffer karna padta to shayad samajh paate..ki ek saath rehna..saath uthna..chai peena..kitni badi neymat hain..you got everything just too easily..aur haan freedom to milni chahiye ...per anji koi rishte me complete freedom nahi samvhav hai...a lil accommodation is the basis of marriage..."!!anji looked at ranga...both feeling a lil ashamed...as ashutosh continued..putting his arm around nidhi"tum log kya sochte ho..ki hum dono mei difference nahi hote??off course hote hain..aur humari to umr mei bhi itna farq hai..jaisa tumne kaha..but we handle our differences..n you two also need to learn that..tum dono bahut achche log ho..dont let the beauty of your relationship be wasted...thats all..."dr ranganath got up..n looked at his wife...and sighed"sir thanks...aapne itna socha...per i really wonder ..kya rasta hai..per haan..koshish karoo ga..kum se kum i will try..."ashutosh looked at anji...n she wiped her tears n said"i dont promise anything..but yes...try karoongi..aapke liye.."ashutosh patted her n said"mere liye nahi tum dono ke liye...tumhare future ke liye..."!!anji stood up..n held ashu's hand ...as both she n ranga withdrew ...

Ashu looked at nidhi...n said"fragile peace hai...but at least its better than war...dekhte hain..."!!!as nidhi got up...ashutosh pulled her to him...n as she sat in his lap..a lil subdued ...perplexed at anji's anger...ashu asked "nidhi..ek baat poochoon"??n she nodded...ashu asked"kya jo anji ne kaha ..woh sach hai..are you scared of me...??aur kya tum bhi dukhi ho joint family mein???"nidhi looked at him..n then smiled"aapko kya lagta hai??darti to kya zid karti itna??aur rahi baat baba aur armaanji ki...let me tell u..un dono ke bina humara ghar..humara parivar ..humari duniya adhoori hai...main adhora ghar nahi chahti..."and as ashu smiled...nidhi pulled at him..."ab chaliye ..walk adhoora reh gaya humara...aur dinner bhi to...pastries wait ker rahi hongi...chaliye ...one two three.."!!and ashutosh laughed!!!

AT THE AIRPORT...A SHORT UPDATE..HOPE U LIKE IT..NOW IN A COUPLE OF DAYS...HONEYMOON WALKS .PASSIONATE NIGHTS..N THEN MALLIKA!!

Chapter Thirty six...

Love... realisation... betrayal...

The dinner ion wild flower hall was an elaborate affair ..as dr ashutosh n nidhi . Themselves served the choco chip n black forest pastries...and after the drs they came to other families...ashu smiled as he saw lil Disha run to nidhi..n nidhi picked her up in her arms...kissing her fervently..as he gave the pastries n shook hands ..when the father asked the occassion..dr ashutosh laughed n said"aapki beti ki dost se shaadi huui hai meri'!!and they laughed..as the parentsdescribed how Disha simply adored nidhi..

Dr ashutosh stood near the huge french window talking to his colleagues when his eyes fell on lil Disha saying bye n blowing kisses at someone...he immiediately knew who it was...nidhi..his nidhi..waving to Dosha who was leaving...ashu could sense the desolation in her form...the desire so apparent in her eyes...ashu closed his eyes for a moment..trying to visualise what lay in nidhi's mind..rather heart...n he could see nidhi...in a white maternity gown..placing his large hand on her big tummy ...euth his baby within...ashutosh brow furrowed...but then his eyes had a strange softness in them...as he returned to present is paper..

"Wondetful lunch...and lovely shopping..mazaa aa gaya"said anji and ranga ordered two sizzlers...s the restaurant sizzled...and anji gorged ...they both joked n laighed...and the bill came ..anji stopped him:let me pay...its my treat"!!and as ranga tried to dissuade her...and pulled her clutch away...it fell open. .spilling its contents...notes..a credit card..a lipstick...n A PACK OF OVARAL ...dr ranga narrowed his eyes...as he bent to pick the strip...n looked at anji with blazing eyes...

"Help..help plz...

"It was Disha's distraught father who pulled his car nack n came in to the foyer dcreeching"my wife is in labor...can you plz call a dr..."the manger looked helplessly..saying the conference was of neurosurgeon s ..n the only help wasto take the lady to simla hospital 45 mins away..."oh she s ripping apart..."and as lil disha cried...nidhi..who was waliking from the terrace heard her...n ran...stopping dead on seeing the scenario...she halted for a split second n then said..."get her in..."n looking at the duty manager..she said"if u could get some hot water n cotton..with antiseotics..i d manage...i am a dr..."!!disha's dad looked with hope"are u a gynaec"??nidhi replied"no...i am not..i am just a dr...but i will manage..dont worry...just manage disha...plz"!!and nidhi walked with a firm resolve..

Dr Ranganath threw the money on the restaurant table n walked out in a huff followed by an equally agitated anji..as they walked towards the end of the mall,ranga asked her to sit on a vacant bench..as he wished to talk..when she did not respond. .he almost pulled her by the elbow n the two sat ..together..n yet separated by miles..."yeh sab...since when.."??anji did not reply..dr ranganath seemed agitated "anji i am asking u something "!!anji kept looking straight but said"a week after marriage..."ranganath sighed"and i like a fool had been waiting for a good news every month"!!anji looked at him straight in his eyes n said"exactly..you have been bothered only by what u want..u desire..meri to koi wish hai hi nahi..i am nothing..just a slave"!!dr ranganath retorted"you know aisa nahi hai..u have all the freedom in the world..but yes i do want a family...why not..after all we married..didnt we"??anji almost shouted"yes we did marry..because i thought u loved me..i didnt know that you were a king marrying to extend your family lineage..."!!dr ranganath pressed his lips ..trying to contain his anger n said"there isn't any need to be sarcastic...ok"??anji made a face and said"ok...so whatever has to be done has to be by u..i cant even be acidic..blast it...i am going back..."and she began to walk off with ranga in tow.."to the hotel..or to lucknow"??anji hailed a cab n both sat.."wildflower hall plz"and the argument continued.."have u ever given a thought to what i want...my dreams n desires??do i look the type who would sing lullabies??pehle to bada disco le jate the dance karte the...now its only baby baby baby...let me tell u once n for all...i am not yielding..n yes in lucknow i d go to my home..my parents' home...atleast i will breathe freely ...in fresh air...aapke yahaan to the bloody fancy dress never ends"!!

Dr ranganath tried to hold her hand..n said"anji..plz dont give knee jerk reaction..u can pursue ur career after a baby also...cant u??achcha lets talk to dr ashutosh. ..he s mych senior n more mature..."!!anji replied firmly"sorry...no such thing..firstly i am sick of washing dirty linen in public..n secondly..aap bhool rahe hain ..woh dono apne homeymoon pe hain...koi panchayat me nahi..so just keep shut"!!

Cv laughed"aap ko lagta hai..ki dr ashutosh nidhi ko bhooka maar rahe honge!!mai milaa tha to achchi moti taazi lag rahi thi..."!!bua beamed n sat near Yog"acgcha..tu ne nahi bataya...chehra chamak raha tha kya..shaayad koi khush khabri ho..."cv laughed"dadi bua..nidhi ek dr hai..aur abhi uski umr hi kya hai..."!!bua wrinkled her nose n remarked"haan.

Lekin woh daktar...budha hone chala..ab nahi hua parivar to kab hoga "??col verma seemed to give up...as he said"bua aapse koi jeet sakta hai kya??aap khud hi pooch leejiyega nidhi se..jab milengi...milengi naa..ki ab bhi naaraaz hain.."??and bua waved her hand"arre naaraaz hoke baithi rahoongi to meri bachchi ko salah kaun dega...tu to hai hi nikamma..."!!

It was in a room quickly converted into a makeshift labor room that nidhi struggled with Ira..Disha's mother...the labor pains were intense and nidhi had to monitor the process..as she took towels dipped in hot water..she could see the patient yell...she knew ..final pushes were required...she bent down ..to help..exhorting encouraging words...as the patient clutched thin air...

*********"so guys the conference finally gets over..n we depart in the morning...so till we meet again at the next one!!"said dr Prakash as wveryone clapped n dr ashutosh shook hands..a few friends teasing him of 'a larger family in the next conference '!!and he as usual just smiled n walked out...into the lobby..to find disha sleeping on the sofa n her dad walking in anxiety...dr ashutosh seemed surprised..he tapped his shoulder n said"aarre..hadn't you left"??mr chugh..nodded n explained the entire sequence of events..how his wife had gone into a slightly premature labor..and they had to return...n how she was delivering at this very moment...as ashutosh asked"by whom..."??and mr chugh replied"your wife...dr nidhi..."!!dr ashutosh was a lil shocked..he did not doubt nidhi's capabilities at all...but what if the case was tough..what if it was a breach baby...and she had no help..not even a nurse..what if...ashutosh closed his eyes for a split second...only to open them again at the jingle of that voice that had become the music of his life...

There stood nidhi..with a tiny baby wrapped in a sheet...she held it to the dad n said"congrats..its a girl..n ur wife is doing fine...now you may call a gynaec..n a paed..or take them to one..."lil Disha woke up due to the siund and as her dad showed her the lil sis..he also said"disha...see an angel...ur nidhi aunty...n disha smiled a deep dimpled smile...which warmed the hearts of all around...nidhi a lil embarrassed at the congrats that the neurosurgeon s were giving her...one teasing ashutosh"do u think doc u can do a delivery "??and ashutosh smiled n said"well i can only do brain surgery...for rest all is my wife"!!and nidhi smiled at the genuine appreciation she got. ...

"I d just run a bath..khana order kariye na..."!!it was a dishevelled nidhi who went into the toilet n sank into a bubble bath in the tub ..scrubbing herself clean..

It was after about 15 mins that dr ashutosh entered...washing his face n hands n then smilingly took a big froth n blew it at his wife's nose...as she sank in deeper...n he smiled "khana yahin khane ka iraada hai kya"??and nidhi smiled lazily..n said"buss aayi jee"!!

Both settled in their dining room..nidhi in her silver nightie n ashutosh in his black track n white tees..sipping tomato coriander soup..followed by rajma n matar pulao..withloads of salad..and ashutosh yawned n said"kahin bhi kich bhi khao..lekin jo maza..biwi ke saath indian khane me hai..woh kahin nahi..."!!nidhi smiled n asked.."achcha...to mere sath khana achcha lagta hai...bataiye na...kya farq hai"??ashutosh smiled as she got hot coffee ...n said"yeh farq hai..ki tumse shaadi ke baad mera wazan 2 kg badh gaya hai...aur insomnia to jaise kahin gaayab hi hogayaa..."!!nidhi winked"ohh..to main aapki tranquilliser hoon"!!

Ashutosh gave her a long lingering look n held her in his arms...as she asked"kya iraada hai..."??but ashutosh just held on to her...he wasn't in a mood to have sex...she could see it in his eyes..it was something deeper...she took his face in her hands n asked in a whisper.."kya baat hai...aapki aankhein kuch kehna chah rahi hain..."and ashutosh kissed her fingers...n pulled her closer...as he cuddled her...she ran her fingers in the hair of his chest...as if saying "speak ur heart...i m listening "!!

"Janti ho nidhi..maine itna akelapan dekha hai..ki ab tumhare sath rehna ek sapna ..ek khwaab lagta hai...aur sach kahoon to kabhi jabhi darr lagta hai..kahin yeh sapna toot naa jaaye..kisi subah main aankhein kholoon aur...aur tum nahi ho mere pehlu mein..."nidhi did not say anything..just pulled him closer...and put his hand between her breasts...on the thudding of ger heart..."sun rahein hain na...mere dil ki dhadkan??jab tak yeh dhadak raha hai..main aapke paas aapke saath hoon...aur dekhiyega ..aakhri saans bhi aise hi loongi ...aapke paas"!!ashutosh put a finger on her lips...n closed his eyes..."nidhi..tumne mujhe itna sab kuch..itne achanak diya hai ki darne saa laga hoon...kahin humara ghar ek makaan na ban ke reh jaaye phir...mujhe zindagi se koi darr nahi...bus ek darr ke siwa..tumhe aur baba ko khone ka darr...kyunki dono ko kho chuka hoon.

Kaafi waqt ke liye...tab jee liya tha...ab nahi jee paaoo ga"!!and nidhi could bear it no further...she just hugged him close...and he could feel her heart beating against his...singing the symphony of together forever...

"Ab uthiye na...breakfast ke baad ghoomne cgalna hai..aur anji ka message hai..unki flt reschedule ho gayi..so they left v early..."ashutosh opened his eyes...his brow furrowed...but then he looked at nidhi..in green n mustard phiran n black churidaar...he pulled her to him..planting a kiss on her nose...n not wanting to disturb that smile..he didnt express his fears about Ranga anji...he caressed her back...and said"ghoomne shaam ko..

Abhi its shopping time..."nidhi laughed"soch leejiye..meri pasand The Best hai..."he laughed understanding the pun n said"jaanta hoon...tabhi to ek senior neurosurgeon quaayal ho gaya"!!and then caressing her vv delicately ..he said"jo khareedo..jitna khareedo...tumhare aane se zindagi mei...tumhare siwa kisi aur cheez ki koi ahmiyat nahi reh gayi..."!!

It was an overloaded dr ashutosh carrying 13 shopping bags ...as he called his cab n dumped the stuff n then came back to nidhi..now munching a roasted bhutta...and as she extendex it to him..he seemed to frown. ..nidhi giggled as she took a bite n said"hills pe bhutta nahi..plains mei chaat nahi??zindagi mei rang aakhir kaise bharte hain aap"???ashutosh kept quiet for a moment n then said in a simple straight forward way"tumse...sirf tumse"!!and nidhi smiled as she threw the almost eaten corn away..n held his hand as they walked...towards the church...and as both recalled the pain n anguish of the last journey. ..nidhi pulled at his sleeve n said"vhaliye church me candle jala ke dua maangein..."!!

Ashutosh nodded n held her hand...as they entered...nidhi lit a candle...while ashutosh stood in silence..knowing what his wife was praying for...she looked around and asked'aap nahi candle jalaa ke kuch maangei ge"??

Dr ashutosh smiled...extended his hand for nidhi...n said"no..i dont need to ask for anything more...haan tum jo chahti ho woh tumhe zuroor mile...aur main...maine to bus ek dua maangi thi..woh qubool ho gayi..."and the rest remained unspoken..etched in silence..frozen in each other's hearts...

"Chalo...aaj aakhri shaam hai humaari..lets have tea in the lawn"spoke dr ashutosh..but nidhi smiled n caught his hand ..adding"correction..humaari bahut shaamein hain ...sath sath..so yeh aakhri lafz nahi achcha laga"!!ashutosh laughed n took nidhi's hand n they walked into the lovely lawns of the hotel...as they ordered tea n sandwiches..nidhi almost sighed n said"ab to..waapas..aapka kaam..."ashutosh nodded n said"haan mera hospital..aur tumhara college!!MD nahi karni??aur yes dadi bua wait kar rahi hongi..milna hai na"??nidhi had a strange look in her eyes as she said..."mil to loongi..per agar aapko kuch kahengi...to.."ashutosh thanked the waiter who got the tea..n added"tum apni fiqr karo..main apni sasural manage kar loonga ..samjhi"!!and he offered nidhi the veg club sandwich...n she took a bite..and looked at the tips of the green deodars..seeming to kiss the sky..she had just loved the place..n not only had she had a lovely..intimate n sensual honeymoon..but she had also realised even more strongly that she desired motherhood...now ..if possible!dr ashutosh smiled n played with her fingers ..trying to read her eyes and then asked"achcha..batao how was it that u managed the delivery alone without any equipment or professional help"??

Nidhi looked away..trying not to display her emotions but her voice quivered as she said"bus kar li...and i tell u..witnessing a birth is simply magical..jab maine..uss baby ko pakda na...to i cant tell u how i felt..laga ki poori quayanaat aa gai meri baahon mein"!!

Dr ashutosh remained silent..he understood the burning desire of nidhi..he didnt want to argue..he diverted the convo to home ..impending results of MD..n returning home...

Nidhi tesponded and as they got up..she said"ab pata nahi kab aayenge yahaan..honeymoon over..."!!and dr ashutosh held her hand..his eyes displaying an intense depth of emotions ..as if saying that the journey of their live will go on for ever n ever...simla or lucknow..they d always be together..ASHUTOSH NIDHI..HUMESHA HUMESHA!!

"Nidhi dekho tumhari shopping to chooti jaa rahi hai "!!as nidhi was about to shut her suit case,dr ashutosh handed over the packets of shopping ..n she giggled"oh my god!!poori mehnat bequaar ho jaati.."and began to open the packets..as two lovely pashmina shawls..a woollen kurta for baba..n loads of dresses fell out..and nidhi began to arrange them..as her husband looked at her endearingly finally asking.."kabhi mann bharta hai shopping se"??n nidhi smiled n replied.."hmmm...suitcase bharr jata hai..per mann...mann ka to aisa hai ...ki woh to aapke credit cards ko poora halaal ker ke hi bharta hai"!!and then ran to hug him...as he caressed her..almost as aif she were a kid..n she suddenly looked up ..transforming into that ever surprisingly serious nidhi"shopping...jewellery...car..sab kuch give up kar sakti hoon...bus aap saath rahiyega..aap ke bina ab nahi reh paaoongi.."!!and she hugged him so tightly that he was probably all she had...all she desired..all she dreamt .."!!

"Aa gaye mere bachchon...welcome home..yeh ghar to ekdum sunsaan biyabaan lagta tha tum dono ke bina..aao aao...arre hiraman..chai..sandwich.."!!and as nidhi sat with baba n armaan helped ashu get the luggage..nidhi shared all the fun with baba..telling him of the shopping..the sunsets..and armaan came n sat asking if ashu had spent time with her..or it was a solitary honeymoon!!nidhi blushed as she looked at dr ashutosh..and recalled all those nights when she had barely slept..and he had caressed each square inch of her body..she seemed to turn crimson and ran inside!!!

As baba called"arre beta..colonel aaya tha do baar..aaj shaam phir aayega..tujhse milne...kuch banwa lena..coffee ke sath.."!!and a warmth of joy descended into nidhi's eyes...as she looked at the click ..waiting for the evening!!

Nidhi was arranging the wardrobe n the room..thinking of contacting anji as soon as she was free..the md results were due in a day or two and she could feel a strange feel in the pit of her stomach...she looked at dr ashutosh who had just entered the room after lunch and the long chat with baba n armaan..he looked at nidhi as she said"sab settle ho gaya..need any help"??and nidhi poked her tongue"haan zara jaale saaf ker deejiye ..aur meri kamar dabaa denge"??and ashutosh stood ..n pulled her nose.."jaale to kahin hain nahi..aur haan kamar dabaane ki to main soch hi raha tha..."and before she could say anything she was scooped in his arms..into a rare naughty session of lovemaking..as he scrapped his beard on her soft flesh..n touched her..his caresses soon turning forceful..and she arching herself to him..first biting her lower lip in her teeth..n closing her eyes..not wanting to show how shamelessly she wanted him..n then her groans..n moans turning to soft imploring cries..telling him to enter her..but he just craddled her..his fingers moving across her...as if checking n reclaiming her peaks n valleys ..till she was literally crying "ashutosh"and then there seemed to be no stopping as she hit one climax after the other..and felt the joy of experiencing the world famous dr hardstone quake n quiver of desire n love in her arms...till they moved united..as if ordained by God himself!!..and she just snuggled upto his bare chest..sirrendering herself to the much needed sleep...though the tense muscles of his body told her...she d not be allowed to sleep for long!

"Nidhi..get up...dekho tumhare baba aaye hain..."and nidhi tried opening her eyes ..glaring at her husband ..all dressed up in a new kurta pyjama..while she still lay in a state of undress!!"uthoon??matlab kya..sone kahaan dete hain aap...i feel ek hufte ki sleep deficit hai mujhe..."!!ashutosh laughed ..n remarked"okay..so apne dean ko leave ke liye apply ker dena..ya main akele chala jaata hoon kisi conference main..then no disturbance "!!but nidhi just got up n made a pout...as he sat next to her n said"jaldi ready hoke aao...maine kahaa hai ki tum bahut tired ho..journey se..."and nidhi made a face and threw a pillow at him..and ran into the toilet..humming with joy..as their relationship seemed more relaxed now..less of inhibitions..less of shame or shyness...n at times she took so much of liberty with him..that she wondered if there was any age gap at all!!!

Nidhi wmerged into the hall in a royal blue churidar kurta with a red n blue bandini dupatta ..n said"namaste baba..."and she stood frozen..as she stood face to face with dadi bua...yes her dadi bua..the culmination of all motherly emotions n instincts!!

Nidhi stood rooted..unable to fathom...as ashutosh touched her on the shoulder..rightfully ..n said"baat nahi karogi dadi bua se"??and nidhi tried to push away the tears ...as dadi bua opened her arms n said in a quivering voice..."aaja meri bachchi"!!and nidhi hugged her hrandmother...as never before...

"Leejiye chai..aur samose...aur dhokla..aur imarti.."!!as cv laughed"imarti..chai ke sath"??nidhi smiled n said"baba ko bahut pasand hain...humare haan to dahi ke saath bhi imarti"!!and all laughed..as dadi bua got up n took nidhi's hand"idhar sun zara..."and nidhi took her into the bedroom.."waah kamra to bada sundar hai tera..."and then pushing the chair away she took nidhi's hand n whispered"dekh beta...main maa bhi hoon aur dadi bhi teri..to mujh se kuch chupasiyo na..khush rakhta hai daaktar tujhe"??nidhi nodded ..n whispered"bahut..."and dadi bua patted her n said"to baat maan meri..jaldi se khush khabri suna de...ab bahut ho gaya ghoomna phirna...ab der mat ker..samjhi"??n nidhi blushed a deep purple ...as dadi bua understood the aching desire for motherhood that seemed to have germinated in her...and she blessed"chand sa beta khele mei bachchi ki gode mein"!!and nidhi pouted ..."no dadi bua...BETI..MOTI SI"!!and dadi bua smiled as she hugged nidhi n emerged...taking dr ashutosh's hand"aati rahoongi daktar..tum mauqua dete raho...aur haan..meri bachchi ka khayal rakhna...aur haan...badon ka huq hota hai naaraaz hona..yeh yaad rakhna..per ab naaraaz nahi hoon..meri nidhi bahut sukhi hai ..tumhare sath..bus ab to...khair maine nidhi ko samjhaya hai..."and baba smiled as he saw a pink nidhi and a confused ashutosh!!!

"Anjikya kiya tune..ab nahi jaayegi waapas..dr ranganath ke paas"??it was nidhi prodding an agitated anji at the Solanki house...as anji explained that dr Ranganath had created a furore over her pills n she had decided to come here. ..Anji was firm..."nidhi ..mujhe pyaar pyaara hai..oer apni aazadi se zyada nahi...mujhe dr ranganath ka pyaar gale ka haar nahi

.phaansi ka fandaa lagne laga tha..i dont wish to go back...rahein woh apne mummy papa ki godi mein..i m not interested"but nidhi could probably hear the tinge of heart break beneath this tough exterior...

As she tried to convince anji about the pills being a breach of faith..anji countered ..."tu mat samjga mujhe mardon ki psyche..THEY R ALL BLOODY MCP..damn dominating...hum apni marzi se jee nahi sakte...tu khud hee analyse kar...dr Ranganath mujhe force kar rahein hain...pregnancy ke liye..aur udhar tu..you r dying to gave a baby..to jeeju is not ketting u get pregnant. .is it fair??humari zindagi mein koi choice hai??koi astitva hai humara"???

Nidhi stood quietly...unable to counter an angry bitter anji...

"Nidhi ..ghar aao jaldi..i am waiting..quick..

:"nidhi was almost shocked at dr ashutosh's insistence..he never asked her this way..it must be an urgency ...she drove her car n came to a screeching halt at mathur niwas..pushing anji's problems away...running in she cried..."jee..."and was engulfed in his large self...as a big boquet of red roses fell around her...and baba smiled n clapped...as nidhi looked confused...and dr ashutosh finally spoke"MD RESULTS...ARE OUT!!CAN U BELIEVE IT..U HAVE GOT THE SECOND RANK...jahaan chahogi..wahaan join ker sakti ho...bolo..jahaan..delhi...bombay..."??nidhi looked at him..n then at baba..their eyes transfigured with joy...and pride..she trued ger best to smile..n hide ger disappointment. ..n said"lucknow...i wont leave home..."and she could see her husband filled with joy...as she rushed in..unable to cope up with the juxtaposition of joy n disappointment...

That night...as nidhi sat playing with her hair brush in front of the dressing table...ashutosh entered...n looked at her..smiling softly..he stood behind her ..n said"jaanta hoon...tum kya chahti ho...n i promise uska bhi time aayega..per pehle dr nidhi ashutosh MBBS .MD"!!and nidhi smiled weakly. .looking at his reflection n anji's words haunting her..."aakhir humara koi astitva hai ya nahi"??????
