Television star Kritika Kamra is an internet addict. But she'll admit the www can be a scary place sometimes. She talks about a strange online experience and the lessons learnt.
From playing the simple, bubbly girl next door in TV soaps, to turning a host for a show with such a sensitive subject, what was the motivation?
I thoroughly enjoyed playing the characters for the TV soaps but hosting is a different ball game altogether. Since you are not playing any character, you have to be yourself. MTV Webbed 2 is my first ever project as a host of a show. What drew me to Webbed 2 was the concept of the show. It's a show that reaches out to the youth and talks to them about their world, their life and their relationships which today, are all online. Through this show I can connect directly with my fans and urge them to be safe.

How can you connect with the concept of Webbed 2?
We all live our lives online these days. We're constantly on different social networking sites sharing personal details and posting pictures. I personally am an internet addict and hence I could relate to a lot of stories that we are showcasing on Webbed 2. Like everything, internet too has its pros and cons. While it is great to surf online and get information, it is also important to be cautious and protect oneself online. MTV Webbed aims to do exactly that.

Do these stories of online experience disturb you? Which is the one that moved you the most?
Yes, such stories upset me a lot as any kind of abuse is disturbing. Most of the cyber abuse victims are innocent, they fell prey to something unknowingly, by blindly trusting someone. Hence it is important to be extremely cautious while interacting with someone online and also about sharing details on the web.

A personal scary online experience you would like to share with the readers?
There was this fan who threatened to commit suicide if I didn't reply to him. Initially, I took it lightly but it turned scary once this guy started a countdown and other people urged me to get in touch with him.

How has the experience made you more careful now when you go online?
I've learned to ignore spammers and keep my private pages locked to avoid cyber stalking.

What are the things one should be vary of when online?
One should be extremely careful while making friends online. Even if you do, think twice before sharing any personal details. One should also use trusted websites thus avoiding getting your accounts hacked. Ensuring proper privacy settings is also important. Account details and passwords should also be safeguarded.
